Further afield you’ll find the charming market town of Monmouth a fifteen-minute drive away. The home is blissfully quiet, with nothing but the occasional bleat of sheep or whinny of a horse in the surrounding fields. Out here, away from it all, you can see the canopy of stars from the private garden. During the day, this spot is perfect for a family barbecue, with dining on the patio. Inside, it’s open-plan living made cosy with a wood-burning stove set in the old stone wall of the living room. Period features like the old timber frame and arrow-slit windows have been retained, showing off the age of the building. The star of the show has got to be the wood-fired hot tub, with views across to the Monnow Valley. Spend your days hiking through the hills with your dogs, before hosing them down at the outside tap and jumping into the warm water – we can't help but feel that the dog's getting the raw end of the deal here.

Speaking of walks, there are plenty of public footpaths that pass across the farm, with your hosts able to provide OS maps and walking books should you need them. If you want to venture further afield, why not head up the Skirrid, Sugar Loaf and Black Mountains – all viewable from the garden.

Set in the Brecon Beacons National Park, this 400 year old farmhouse has been lovingly restored into a luxury eco home. It’s powered by green electricity – from the renewable energy that goes into the underfloor heating, to micro-hydro generation and solar panels. Upstairs the traditional farmhouse feel has been preserved, from the vaulted wood beamed ceiling, to the cosy living room set around a wood burning stove. Head downstairs to find the three tranquil bedrooms with king size beds, and windows looking out over the beautiful valley. 

Set in 45 acres of private land, you’ll be totally ensconced in peace and privacy here. The land is a haven for wildlife: there are beehives and an orchard, and you’ll hear and see a wide range of birds, including owls, kites, herons, and woodpeckers. The house is in a Black Skies reserve, meaning there’s very little air and light pollution. Come evening, don your bathrobe and head out to the wood fired hot tub for some incredible stargazing. 

There’s plenty to do in the surrounding area. Follow one of the excellent hiking trails in the Brecon Beacons, taking you through the Black Mountains, or to wild swimming spots. Your hosts live in a barn conversion adjacent to the farmhouse, and are always happy to give tips and recommendations. The house is right on the River Grwyne Fawr and adjacent to a tiny Mediaeval Church, so you’ll be surrounded by beauty wherever you go. While this is an opportunity to unplug from the rest of the world, civilization isn’t too far away – the towns of Abergavenny and Crickhowell are 5 miles away, where you’ll find a range of local amenities.

This grade II listed Georgian House in Ludlow is everything we look for in a quiet village getaway. Rebuilt and lived in by former glove makers from the late 1600s, this home is steeped in history, dating back to the Civil War – and doesn't it show. There are heaps of original features to these cosy digs. We especially love the handmade oak doors, wood beam ceilings and intricate fireplace that have been professionally restored by master craftsmen. While these period features add interest, the comfy living room is our favourite spot, with its realistic optimyst stove and large L-shaped sofa. Toast up those toes in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine in hand – you'll feel all warm and homely in no time at all. Step outside of this 17th-century building and explore one of the loveliest market towns in England that's positively brimming with listed buildings, medieval castles and striking churches. Take a short twelve-minute walk up Corve Street to the town centre and explore this historic place for yourself.

Even before you enter, it’s clear that there’s something special about Faerie World. The high position of the cottage gives a heavenly view of the stream below, and you can hear the babbling water from the terrace, which is itself surrounded by flowers, and makes you feel like you’re in a fairytale. Once inside, the living room and bedroom don’t disappoint. The bedroom in particular, with its Farrow & Ball colours, stands out. The kitchen doesn’t have the same aesthetic charm, but that’s a small gripe, and shouldn't give you any cause for concern.

This barn has been lovingly restored into a stylish home. We adore the Usk Valley vistas from the patio windows, and if you look up, you get a view of the sky through the glazed ceiling. 

The impressive living space is perfect for entertaining your family and friends. There's plenty of room on the two comfy grey sofas for your guests and a selection of books and games to keep the gang occupied. Whip up some Welsh rarebit for lunch in the modern kitchen with its island, or head outside and grill some local produce on the barbecue. Later relax in the hot tub with a glass of wine or next to the toasty fire pit.

There's lots to do out and about, too. Llandegfedd reservoir, with all its watersports, great fishing, walking and cycling, is just over 1 mile away, while the charming market town of Usk has many independent boutiques and several cafes and restaurants (2.2 miles from this home). It's been impeccably put together by its owner Kari, a professional designer, with nods to traditional country chic, contemporary cool and even Antipodean modern rustic – Kari grew up in Australia. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions.
