It’s powered by green electricity – from the renewable energy that goes into the underfloor heating, to micro-hydro generation and solar panels. Upstairs the traditional farmhouse feel has been preserved, from the vaulted wood beamed ceiling, to the cosy living room set around a wood burning stove. Head downstairs to find the three tranquil bedrooms with king size beds, and windows looking out over the beautiful valley. 

Set in 45 acres of private land, you’ll be totally ensconced in peace and privacy here. The land is a haven for wildlife: there are beehives and an orchard, and you’ll hear and see a wide range of birds, including owls, kites, herons, and woodpeckers. The house is in a Black Skies reserve, meaning there’s very little air and light pollution. Come evening, don your bathrobe and head out to the wood fired hot tub for some incredible stargazing. 

There’s plenty to do in the surrounding area. Follow one of the excellent hiking trails in the Brecon Beacons, taking you through the Black Mountains, or to wild swimming spots. Your hosts live in a barn conversion adjacent to the farmhouse, and are always happy to give tips and recommendations. The house is right on the River Grwyne Fawr and adjacent to a tiny Mediaeval Church, so you’ll be surrounded by beauty wherever you go. While this is an opportunity to unplug from the rest of the world, civilization isn’t too far away – the towns of Abergavenny and Crickhowell are 5 miles away, where you’ll find a range of local amenities.

It's been impeccably put together by its owner Kari, a professional designer, with nods to traditional country chic, contemporary cool and even Antipodean modern rustic – Kari grew up in Australia. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions. This grade II listed Georgian House in Ludlow is everything we look for in a quiet village getaway. Rebuilt and lived in by former glove makers from the late 1600s, this home is steeped in history, dating back to the Civil War – and doesn't it show. There are heaps of original features to these cosy digs. We especially love the handmade oak doors, wood beam ceilings and intricate fireplace that have been professionally restored by master craftsmen. While these period features add interest, the comfy living room is our favourite spot, with its realistic optimyst stove and large L-shaped sofa. Toast up those toes in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine in hand – you'll feel all warm and homely in no time at all. Step outside of this 17th-century building and explore one of the loveliest market towns in England that's positively brimming with listed buildings, medieval castles and striking churches. Take a short twelve-minute walk up Corve Street to the town centre and explore this historic place for yourself.

Converted from a hayloft in a Victorian stable block, original features like the wooden beams and porthole windows give the space a unique and rustic character. But you’ll still find plenty of modern comforts – the master bedroom features a walk-in dressing room, there's a charming Juliet balcony that opens the living room up to the treetops and there's a new log burner for staying cosy no matter the weather. Spend your days exploring the area – the city of Ludlow is only a short ten-minute drive away and boasts a castle and charming market, and there are plenty of hiking trails through the hills to add to the itinerary. When you arrive back home, run a bath fed from the local spring and put together a meal in the sociable kitchen. There's even a private cobbled courtyard to sit out in on warm evenings. If you're lucky, you'll catch sight of the swifts and swallows that nest in the area.
