If you’re looking for a peaceful escape to the Brecon Beacons with a few luxuries thrown in, this is the cottage for you. Set within 12 acres of estate grounds, there are plenty of walks for dogs and humans alike. If you’re seriously into your hiking, then the trails right from the cottage’s front door into the peaks of the Brecon Beacons (including Pen Y Fan) won’t disappoint. For the more sedate option, follow the flat canal path into the charming town of Brecon for cafés and shops. The cottage itself radiates history from its old stone walls and low, timber-beamed ceilings. A little library of books and wood-burner in the living room adds to that away-from-it-all feeling. In the kitchen and living room, the flagstone floor is heated underfoot so there’s no sacrificing comfort for aesthetics here. Upstairs, the master bedroom comes with a glorious sleigh bed to send you off to sleep. 

Bothying In Style

With the flexibility to sleep up to 24 people, this magical country house is all set up for special events, gatherings of friends and family, activity holidays and more. With views across the Wye Valley, it's set on five acres of pristine land and has nine bedrooms for you to choose between – either in the beautifully restored and extended 17th-Century farmhouse or the stunning new guest annexe. 

Lovers of interior design will have a field day here. It's been impeccably put together by its owner Kari, a professional designer, with nods to traditional country chic, contemporary cool and even Antipodean modern rustic – Kari grew up in Australia. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions. And if you fancy an action-packed break, your host can put together a unique itinerary for your group. You're bound to make memories that last a lifetime.    

The Memory Jar

Searching for somewhere off the beaten track? It’s time to stop scrolling. Nestled in the Forest of Dean, this home has tranquillity at its core. Perfect for a family, four-legged friends included, the fully-fenced garden offers somewhere to sit back and listen to the sound of nature – just keep an eye on children and dogs, as although the trout pond is fenced with gated access, you can never be too safe. Exploring locally, you can take to the trails through the forest where if you’re lucky, you may even spot some wild boar and deer.

Wild Boar & Trout Pond

Set on a working farm between Monmouth and Abergavenny, this home promises a peaceful escape surrounded by nature. If you don’t feel like going too far, you’ll find a natural swimming pond and 100 acres of land to roam here, along with the Offa's Dyke Path. If that’s not enough, hikers can also enjoy the trails of the Black Mountains, in the southeast corner of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Of course, you may prefer to kick back and relax during your stay – if so, the wood-fired hot tub, rolltop bath, and wood burner are ready to take your vacation relaxation to the next level. 

The Magic of Monmouthshire

Many barn conversions across the British countryside tend to be relatively small and cosy affairs, but this example in rural Gloucestershire is a comparative colossus with a wealth of social space and amenities.

The design inside lies on the rustic side of things, with exposed stonework and wooden ceiling beams to be spotted alongside a wood-burning stove, a clawfoot bathtub and an ornate bed frame in the master bedroom. That being said, there's a contemporary sheen where it matters, especially in the pastel bedrooms, sleek bathrooms and the kitchen complete with an Aga.

So how would you fill your time at the address? Well, when the weather permits, you can make the most of the large garden with a lawn big enough for games and a patio area for alfresco feasts. There's even a hot tub ready and waiting for a relaxing spot to pass the golden hour. If, however, grey clouds make an appearance at any point, don't fret – there's a snooker table inside, as well as another games room in the external former stables, that should keep guests entertained for a while.

In the local area, the town of Lydney is only eight minutes' drive away when you need supplies, while both Newport and Gloucester lie about forty-five minutes away in the car. There's a wide choice of natural attractions to be discovered nearby as well, ranging from the Forest of Dean and Puzzlewood to Clearwell Caves.

Secret Hills

Offering peace, privacy and beautiful views, this home is a natural haven in the Forest of Dean. Crafted in the 1800s from local stone, there’s a wonderful sense of tradition here along with all the home comforts you could need for a cosy stay. Inside, there’s a wood-burning stove and plenty of space to cook, relax and socialise. There’s also a snug mezzanine level which can double up as a sleeping area for two guests. And when it comes to adventures, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Follow hiking trails straight form the door, explore the nearby Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail or head further afield to Cinderford and Ross-on-Wye. 

The Zion Chapel

From the moment you see the grand stone exterior and cobbled courtyard, you’ll know that this ever-so-charming home is steeped in history. It's a former malthouse that’s over 300 years old and filled with traditional features. When you step into the entrance hall, you’re entering through the large oak door onto the original cart-way, and as you start trying to choose which bedroom you want to lay claim to, you’ll be winding your way up a turret stairway with rope bannisters, surrounded by wooden beams and original fireplaces. The interior has been fully renovated, with a modern handmade kitchen, squishy sofas, and cute-as-a-button bedrooms. Sip your afternoon tea perched on the sunny window seat with a good book in hand (there's an extensive collection to choose from), while gazing at the expansive green views of the playing fields and village church in the backdrop. Elsewhere, the large 14-seater pine dining table will be the perfect spot to savour a slow dinner with the entire group. Although in the garden you'll notice a patio, complete with outdoor furniture, that’s ideal for wine and cheese nights – there's a large lawn and a range of outdoor games available too (including table tennis) for hours of early evening fun. You don’t have to go far to continue the historical theme, as the pub next door is one of the oldest in the country and has been the resting place for many a monarch visiting the area since the 15th century. The surrounding county town, Frome, just a fifteen-minute drive away, was voted one of the best places to live in the UK - explore the rich history, shop at independent boutiques, buy fresh produce at the local market or dine at one of the many eateries dotted around nearby.

Malter’s Rest

Situated on a historic private estate in the heart of Gloucestershire, this dreamy cottage is the perfect setting for your next family getaway to the Cotswolds. 

You’d be hard-pressed to find a cosier base than this – boasting a snug living room complete with soft throws and a toasty fireplace, this is the kind of place we all dream of coming home to after a chilly day in the English countryside. Warm up with a cup of tea on the sofa or head upstairs to the family bathroom for a relaxing bubble bath before drifting off to sleep in one of the cottage's quiet bedrooms.

The next morning, start your day with a breakfast of locally produced organic goodies from the local farm shop or – if the weather’s on your side – head out to the garden and soak up some sun. This is the perfect place for little ones and four-legged friends to roam but there’s plenty to explore in the local area if you fancy a change of scenery. Breathe in the sweet scent of lime blossom as you travel down the 800-metre private road leading out of the estate – with Westonbirt Arboretum, Berkeley Castle, and The Cotswold Water Park all within striking distance, you've got plenty of destinations to choose from so why not ditch the GPS and see where the day takes you?

Sugar & Lime

This beautiful home sits within the grounds of a historic stately manor. Located between Herefordshire and Monmouthshire, you’ll be perfectly positioned to explore the Brecon Beacons and the area’s delightful towns and villages. French doors open to the terrace and garden, where you can play croquet, admire the deer park just beyond the estate’s gardens, or unwind in the wood-fired hot tub under the open sky. Inside, the wood-burning stove keeps things cosy. It's a stylish and tranquil home that’s been meticulously renovated, and we especially love the elegant tiling in the en-suite bathrooms.

The Summer Lodge

On arrival at this beautiful A-frame cottage, you’ll be greeted with stunning views across the Wye Valley and a couple of bottles of local ale from your host’s favourite brewery. A wall of glass opens up the living room to the valley beyond and the morning mist tumbling between forests and fells is quite a sight from this hilltop location. Come nightfall, you’re far from civilisation so the sky speckles with a blanket of stars – spot constellations from the warmth of the wood-fired hot tub outside or walk to Michelin-star restaurant The Whitebrook, fifteen minutes away. Wandering through the wildflower-strewn garden you’ll find a picnic bench and barbecue for hazy summer days outdoors and rambling walks across the countryside start from just outside the door. Back inside, we love the collection of holiday reads, tucked into bookshelves below the raised bed in the studio. Toys in the living room and bunkbeds in the second bedroom let you know this place is family-friendly too. 

Wye Valley View

Escape to the Gloucestershire countryside with this modern holiday home located in the quaint village of Longhope. Take in the views of the meadows and fields from the hot tub and patio while listening to the babbling brook below. Or keep the kids entertained with the table tennis set, as well as the arcade and board games in the games room. The open-plan lounge has a welcome wood-burning stove for cooler days and a modern kitchen, while the dining table overlooks the garden and vistas. Perfectly located with a convenience shop, bakery and pub within walking distance, this Forest of Dean location means there’s plenty to see and do in the locale.

Brook Retreat

Nestled in Ruspidge in the heart of the Forest of Dean, this semi-detached cottage is the perfect base for exploring the stunning natural beauty of Gloucestershire. Inside, the home is fuss-free and equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay, while the garden provides a quiet sun-kissed spot for evening drinks.
