Newport is a pretty market town on the north coast of Pembrokeshire, situated at the foot of Carnigli Mountain and the Preseli Hills. There's an array of eateries, including small cafes and old-fashioned pubs, within walking distance, as well as independent shops and galleries. Newport Beach isn't far – about a half-hour stroll along the coastal path – while historic sites like Pentre Ifan, Castell Henllys Iron Age Village and Nevern Castle are less than ten minutes by car.

It was love at first sight when we clapped our eyes on this eco shepherd's hut, squirreled away in the sleepy village of Moylegrove along the North Pembrokeshire coastline.

With the mighty Pembrokeshire Coast National Park just a stone's throw away, this is a home to embrace the great outdoors and escape the outside world. Discover vast beaches and secluded, sandy coves just a fifteen-minute walk away. Embrace the sea with kayaking and dolphin-spotting boat trips. Or, for something a little more genteel, there are independent shops, galleries and fabulous restaurants just a short drive away in the nearby villages.

Back at home, we love the contemporary design aesthetic of this shepherd's hut, with copper and matt black accents letting the birch-clad interiors sing. A king-sized bed decked out in Egyptian cotton sheets and a rainfall shower room next door dial up the luxury. And the welcome hamper crammed with organic goodies (think fresh eggs straight from the host's hens and homemade bread) has everything you need to rustle up breakfast in the smart kitchenette. Or, let your host, Megan cook up a feast for you over at the main house.

A home for all seasons, in winter months, hunker down beside the wood-burning fire as sunsets stream through the picture windows. And in the summer months, see day turn to night beside the fire-pit (which handily doubles as your barbecue) – the stargazing is out of this world.

Your eco-minded hosts built this cedar shepherd's hut with their guests' needs in mind – namely, escaping the everyday hustle and bustle and offering a chance to reconnect with nature, themselves and their partner. 

Your hosts have found space for a comfy king-size mattress despite the compact footprint. Given the lack of light pollution out here, stargazing through the skylight from the comfort of your bed is truly breathtaking. Elsewhere, the kitchenette is perfect for cooking up light bites to eat at the dining table or in the outdoor dining area.

Set within its own private garden, the outdoor space has been planted with seasonal herbs, flowers and salad, which you're more than welcome to help yourself to. In addition, a fire pit makes for atmospheric evenings in nature.

Away from the charming retreat, you're a stone's throw from the 186-mile Pembrokeshire Coastal Path and approximately six miles from both the beautiful holiday hotspot of Newport and the bustling market town of Cardigan.

Inside, you'll find rustic living spaces that exude warmth – it'll be hard to resist a Netflix movie night curled up in front of the roaring log burner – and we appreciate how interior bi-fold doors give you full control over the size of the living space. Home chefs can let loose in the kitchen, rustling up freshly-baked cakes and mouthwatering Sunday roasts to share around the eight-seater table. Upstairs, a soak in the lavish free-standing bathtub before bedtime is just the ticket after a long day.

Speaking of, we can't help but swoon over the verdant, lush landscape that awaits you outside. Listen to the babbling stream as you share a pitcher of Pimm's or gather around the fire pit on hazy summer evenings. It's not just grown-ups who will adore this home. Perched on the banks of the Teifi estuary, this renovated former sea captain's villa in southwest Wales treats guests to some spectacular waterside views. On sunny days, these can be enjoyed on the large terrace, whether that's reclining in one of the loungers, lying in the hammock or sitting around the alfresco dining area, waiting for dinner to be served off the barbecue or out of the pizza oven. However, the sparkly panorama can just as easily be appreciated from the huge windows in the open-concept kitchen-dining area or from the bedrooms. The village of Tresaith on the Ceredigion coastline is relatively humble, but you can find some truly spectacular homes here – this three-storey gem is among them.

It's definitely an address that has been constructed with the surrounding scenery in mind, with sea views to be admired from the balconies and out through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Even to the rear of the house that isn't so blessed with coastal vistas, there's a peaceful terrace surrounded by flower beds and it's more than possible to enjoy alfresco feasts in this space, thanks to the dining table, pizza oven and barbecue.

Should the weather ever be a little uninspiring, there's plenty to keep guests entertained inside. In the games room alone, you'll find tables for pool and table tennis, as well as a darts board and piano. Once you've exhausted these, the cinema room complete with leather seats and surround sound is the ideal place to watch a movie or some live sports. It's just as easy to escape to the Jacuzzi bathtub and treat yourself to an unrushed soak.

You'll eventually want to head to the seaside at some point and Tresaith Beach is less than ten minutes' away on foot. It's easy to arrange watersport activities here and – if you're lucky – spot dolphins. There's also a waterfall at the far end of the sand, as well.

So whether you’re listening to the sound of the water on the patio, enjoying a meal under the trees or relaxing with a long soak in the bath, you’ll find this home provides a constant sense of serenity.  

Days can be spent admiring the local wildlife, observing ancient plant fossils and hiking across this majestic landscape – there’s a farm trail leading directly from the house. You’ll also find the nearest supermarket, pubs and cafes are just minutes away.

You'll even find an arrow slit in the lounge and another in the ground floor wet room wall.

Cleverly converted and architect designed, this home uses green energy and is insulated with sheep's wool. It's a surprisingly modern and comfortable home for a small family or a couple of friends here to make the most of its idyllic rural setting. By day, explore the farm thanks to a trail that starts at your door, visiting cattle and spotting wildlife as you go. If you're a keen cyclist, you're within striking distance of the Afan Forest and Bike Park Wales, with safe storage for your equipment.

Drift away in the warm bubbles while contemplating the scenery of the rolling countryside. It’s a scenic 40-minute walk into the village of Wiseman’s Bridge, or fetch your towel, bathing suit and other paraphernalia to make the ten-minute drive down to the glorious Pembrokeshire coastline and its award-winning beaches.

Inside, the glass doors in the main living area are especially generous when it comes to natural light and this dances pleasingly off the wooden floors and white walls. Overlooking the quaint harbour, this waterfront apartment puts you at the heart of some of Tenby's favourite spots. Stroll to the sleepy seaside town's restaurants and boutique shops, or walk to Tenby North Beach in under ten minutes. The interiors are a little dated, but the home is well-kept, cosy and equipped with most of what you'll need for a comfortable stay – though you'll have to bring your own towels. With views and a central location, this home does well for itself, and the compact balcony is a nice bonus, especially for a nightcap.

Blessed with beautiful beach views, this charming seaside cottage lets you watch the waves from bay window seats. Although this Grade II listed building has recently had a top-to-toe renovation, it still treasures all the traditional details. 

Downstairs, a smart seating area sits under skylights and looks out onto your small patio – why not read a book here? In every room of the house, you'll love the timeless interior design – think wood beams and a clawfoot bathtub.  

Climb the stripped-back staircase, there you will find an open-plan living space. You can bake Welsh cakes in the kitchen, then swap stories with your loved ones on these sand-coloured sofas. Across the road, the pebbled seashore is your real playground. Dale Beach is a wide and sheltered bay, making it ideal for several watersports.

In the village, you'll find an award-winning pub and great places to eat. After bird watching on the Gann, come back and warm your hands with a real fire. Both bedrooms are equally as cosy, promising you a good night's sleep after long walks on the Pembrokeshire coast.

Sailor's Rest

This Grade II listed seaside cottage is the perfect base for relaxing breaks on the Pembrokeshire coast. It was lovingly restored and modernised in 2021, so while it still retains its historic charm – and traditional features and layout – it’s now a wonderfully comfortable and cosy cottage. 

The cottage sits just across the road from the sea, so you can be paddling in the shallows of Dale’s beach in no time. From the water sports centre in Dale, you can try your hand at any number of activities, including sailing, surfing, and kayaking. We’d be tempted to give paddleboarding a go, followed by a hearty meal in the award-winning village pub. Of course, you might choose to fish for your supper instead?

Nature-lovers will have plenty to keep them entertained too, with a whole host of coastal walks to enjoy. You might partake in a spot of bird watching on the Gann, or take the ferry to Skomer Island to see the puffins in summer. 

However you spend your days, you’ll be glad to have such a pleasant home from home to return to. When the weather is fine you can tuck into picnic lunches on the front lawn, and admire the sea view as you dine. When it’s a little colder, nothing beats curling up in the living room to play board games together.

Found just outside the town of Narbeth in beautiful Pembrokeshire, this home is generous both when it comes to size and the number of distractions that guests will have at their disposal.

Many of these amenities lie out on the grounds, which include everything from a full-size rugby pitch with posts and a zipline to a lake and orchard perfect for peaceful strolls. Add an eight-person hot tub into the mix and you've got a property in which boredom is unlikely to rear its head.

There's plenty to like inside as well. As well as three separate living areas — including one on the first floor with pretty views of rolling countryside — we're also particularly fond of the huge kitchen fitted with sleek surfaces and smart wooden finishes.

When you want to see a little more of the local area, it's hard to know where to start. If the sun makes an appearance, why not head for Coppet Hall Beach only fifteen minutes' drive away or one of the huge number of coves and sandy spots that lie along the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path? Alternatively, the charming town of Tenby lies twenty minutes away in the car.
