Newport is a pretty market town on the north coast of Pembrokeshire, situated at the foot of Carnigli Mountain and the Preseli Hills. There's an array of eateries, including small cafes and old-fashioned pubs, within walking distance, as well as independent shops and galleries. Newport Beach isn't far – about a half-hour stroll along the coastal path – while historic sites like Pentre Ifan, Castell Henllys Iron Age Village and Nevern Castle are less than ten minutes by car.

It was love at first sight when we clapped our eyes on this eco shepherd's hut, squirreled away in the sleepy village of Moylegrove along the North Pembrokeshire coastline.

With the mighty Pembrokeshire Coast National Park just a stone's throw away, this is a home to embrace the great outdoors and escape the outside world. Discover vast beaches and secluded, sandy coves just a fifteen-minute walk away. Embrace the sea with kayaking and dolphin-spotting boat trips. Or, for something a little more genteel, there are independent shops, galleries and fabulous restaurants just a short drive away in the nearby villages.

Back at home, we love the contemporary design aesthetic of this shepherd's hut, with copper and matt black accents letting the birch-clad interiors sing. A king-sized bed decked out in Egyptian cotton sheets and a rainfall shower room next door dial up the luxury. A cabin in the woods reimagined, this home belongs in the centrefold of a magazine. Traditional wooden panelling adds a rustic feel to this home, but it's nicely contrasted with a stylish monochrome palette and huge floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook a colourful sensory garden and pond. It's easy to spend an afternoon sitting on the south-facing deck, enjoying the peace of the Welsh countryside and keeping an eye out for the swallows, swifts, ducks and frogs living their lives on the water — even an otter has been spotted in the grounds by previous guests. After a stroll among the greenery, unwind with a glass of wine in front of the log burner or head up to the snug in the mezzanine with a well-thumbed book. Venturing out, two sandy beaches, Norman castles and a few quaint cafes await in the village of Llansteffan, which can be reached in eight minutes by car. Also close by is Green Castle Woods – about a five-minute drive – which is perfect for afternoon strolls through ancient woodlands. Or, ten minutes in the opposite direction lies Carmarthen, believed to be the oldest town in Wales – head there for places to eat, drink and shop aplenty.

As you look around this home, it becomes clear very quickly that it has been designed to make the most of the beautiful coastal scenery in which this part of south Wales really specialises. In the living room, huge bi-fold doors open up to Juliet balconies that gaze out over Tenby's South Beach, while in the bedrooms there are further balconies, only this time with a view of Caldy Island. With such glorious panoramas, you could be forgiven for not really paying the interior much attention, but when you do get around to it, you'll find a modern space that's simple but effective — we're fans of the minimalist white kitchen, in particular. As you can probably imagine when looking out the window, the beach isn't too far away — just five minutes' walk, in fact. Tenby Castle can be reached in under a quarter of an hour on foot, too.

Found just outside the town of Narbeth in beautiful Pembrokeshire, this home is generous both when it comes to size and the number of distractions that guests will have at their disposal.

Many of these amenities lie out on the grounds, which include everything from a full-size rugby pitch with posts and a zipline to a lake and orchard perfect for peaceful strolls. Add an eight-person hot tub into the mix and you've got a property in which boredom is unlikely to rear its head.

There's plenty to like inside as well. As well as three separate living areas — including one on the first floor with pretty views of rolling countryside — we're also particularly fond of the huge kitchen fitted with sleek surfaces and smart wooden finishes.

When you want to see a little more of the local area, it's hard to know where to start. If the sun makes an appearance, why not head for Coppet Hall Beach only fifteen minutes' drive away or one of the huge number of coves and sandy spots that lie along the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path? Alternatively, the charming town of Tenby lies twenty minutes away in the car.


The First Day of Spring

Although this Pembrokeshire apartment underwent a recent renovation, one thing that hasn't changed is just how peaceful the view from the balcony is, with the unmistakably blue waters of Carmarthen Bay peering through the trees. It may not be the biggest outdoor space in the world, but this seaward orientation makes up for it.

Inside, the glass doors in the main living area are especially generous when it comes to natural light and this dances pleasingly off the wooden floors and white walls. When it comes to the design, it's a pretty simple affair with only a few pieces of coastal artwork nodding to the location, but it's all been executed pretty well, particularly the sleek kitchen and bathroom.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the local area, the centre of Saundersfoot and its beach is all of five mintues' walk from the front door. The town of Tenby is also only ten minutes' drive down the coastline and offers visitors a castle and a selection of galleries to visit.

If you'd rather actively explore, we highly recommend walking a section of the jaw-dropping Pembrokeshire Coastal Path, or heading into the mysterious Preseli Mountains dotted with prehistoric monuments. Finally, reward yourself with a soak in the full-size hot tub tucked away on the private veranda.

Super luxurious yet charmingly old-school, this manor sits in the charming town of Penally, near Tenby. So as well as having cosy country pubs and the Pembrokeshire Coast Path on your doorstep, it’s just a six-minute drive into the centre of Tenby to explore the castle and beach. The home itself stands bay-windowed and bold, bright white against the blue sky. Built around 1840, it’s a Grade II listed building with two acres of stepped, walled garden to explore. Terraces with panoramic sea views, a swimming pool with adjoining hot tub, flowerbeds bursting with bloom and secret grottos fill the grounds. When dinner calls, there are plenty of places to dine – the sunny orangery that opens out onto the terrace, the sunny cubby hole in the kitchen or in the long, formal dining room. Chefs of the group can cook in the family kitchen, or leave it to a professional and make use of the catering kitchen in the basement. Down here you’ll also find the private bar and games room, like your own personal pub. Bedrooms come in all shapes and sizes to fit couples and kids, and our favourite has to be the master with its hand-carved four-poster bed and view of the sea from the bay window.

Tucked away in the pretty village of Ludchurch and surrounded by glorious Pembrokeshire countryside, this home is a haven of tranquillity. As a former barn, this home retains much of its rustic charm with exposed beams and high vaulted ceilings, but don’t worry, there are no creaky areas or draughty spaces here. The rooms have all the modern comforts you could ask for – a cosy log burner, soft furnishings, WiFi and underfloor heating throughout. The open-plan living area is wonderfully spacious, uncluttered and awash with natural light. If the weather is good you’ll want to push open the patio doors and breathe in the countryside views. The garden has a serene summerhouse, but the best place to absorb the peaceful surroundings is from the heated hot tub. Drift away in the warm bubbles while contemplating the scenery of the rolling countryside. It’s a scenic 40-minute walk into the village of Wiseman’s Bridge, or fetch your towel, bathing suit and other paraphernalia to make the ten-minute drive down to the glorious Pembrokeshire coastline and its award-winning beaches.
