There's an awful lot to like about this Regency home, but to start with anything but the incredible location feels almost sacrilegious. Sitting on top of Chester's old walls and overlooking the River Dee, you'll spend countless hours on the rear terrace, dining and relaxing with this most scenic of backdrops.

That being said, the home's interior is quite impressive, too. The tall windows and high ceilings lend an innate grandeur, and this is only furthered by the contemporary design that gives classic tropes – chandeliers, wood-panelled bookshelves, copper bathtubs – a modern-day spin. The stunning kitchen and cosy living room complete with roaring fireplace are sure to be favourites among those with sophisticated tastes, but there's also a massive games room and home cinema to keep everybody entertained.

When you can prise yourself away from this home's many amenities, there's a wealth of historic attractions, buzzy bars and riverside walking paths to explore in local Chester, but there are other options a little further afield – beaches on the north Welsh coastline can be reached in 45 minutes' drive, while Liverpool sits a similar amount of time to the north.

Your morning coffee comes with a view here, as many bedrooms step directly out onto the terrace, while the large alfresco dining area will be popular when the sun's out. A small town with an intriguing history, the compact grid system of Caerwys was allegedly the model layout for the first settler who mapped out the city of Philadelphia. But far from its transatlantic, urban sibling, this quaint village has stuck to its rustic roots. At the heart of the town, a five-minute walk from the golf club, four from the 13th century St. Michaels Church, and less than a minute from your nearest pub, this cottage is ready to welcome you home. As you arrive, its rugged stone exterior oozes rural, village charm. The white door beckons you inside, where underfloor heating allows you to explore every room in warmth and comfort. Its cosy, traditional lounge features a wood-burning stove and plump leather sofas – perfect for snuggling up with a classic novel as you sip hot chocolate. But on summer days, the conservatory at the back offers a modern, sunlit nook for sipping chilled pinot grigio. We love the stylish, bi-folding doors leading out to your private patio and courtyard. With picnic benches, a barbecue, alfresco dining table, plus a view of the aforementioned church, you’ll be spending every balmy afternoon in this idyllic spot.

Built a few years ago, this beautiful conversion may still bear some resemblance to a barn with its stone clad facade, but that’s where the similarities end. Inside you’ll find simple, clean lines and, apart from a few pops of colour, a fairly neutral colour palette. Stylish, and clearly modern, the home’s crowning glory is the wide expanse of green that can be admired from the front door. Stare out over the beautiful dips and peaks as you take your seat at the wrought-iron table outside and nurse your first cup of coffee of the day. 

Breakfast can also be enjoyed out here if you prefer, although the wood dining table in the living space is elegant, and with its position right next to a window, you don’t entirely lose sight of the scenic views on offer. 

With a real focus on reconnecting you with nature, most of the ground floor rooms open up to let the fresh country air in – take a nap on the cushy bed with the doors ajar and wake up refreshed. 

Walk the grounds or watch the little ones run around on the lawn whilst you enjoy a glass of wine in a sun lounger. This is also a great spot for sunsets, but before that, you can drive out and explore the rural Welsh beauty of this area, you might want to stop off at the Rhug Estate Farm Shop and drive-thru, about six minutes away, to refuel before perhaps enjoy two splendid nearby reservoir walks: Brenig and Alwyn

The 16th-century building is full of historical details – look out for the old baking oven, chapel benches and even a coat of arms on the ceiling. A short eleven-minute drive will take you to Denbigh Castle, with its ancient walls and bustling art scene in town. The house is just across the road from the beach, so each morning you’ll wake up to the sound of the sea gently rushing to shore. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room showcase the home’s prime beachfront location – if you’re anything like us, you’ll lose track of how long you spend gazing at the peaceful view. There’s a small garden at the front of the house, where you might enjoy a cuppa while watching the fishing boats in the distance, as well as a sunny patio at the back of the house, ideal for takeaway dinners of fish and chips after long days spent on the beach. 

When you’ve had your fill of sailing, swimming and sea fishing from the beach, there’s still plenty to explore nearby. You might like to bring your bikes and set off along the coastal track. Conwy and its gorgeous castle are just twelve minutes away by car, which makes for a lovely afternoon out. Pop into a cafe for lunch before visiting the castle and taking in the history. Snowdonia National Park is also within easy reach, so any hikers in your group will be happy – a thirty-two-minute drive will see you setting off on walks that guarantee gorgeous scenery.

From here, it’s a short walk to the castle, beaches and amenities. It’s also a great base for guests looking to adventure further afield and explore Snowdonia National Park.

From the peace and quiet of the street, you’d never guess you were just a two-minute walk from Chester’s historic centre. Almost all the town's biggest sights are within walking distance in fact – you’re minutes from Grosvenor Park, the River Dee, Chester Racecourse, and the Roman Amphitheatre. Built in the 19th century, the house has been fully renovated and has a bright, fresh feel to it that is instantly welcoming. Decorated in refreshing whites, there are bright splashes of orange, green, and yellow to greet you in the morning. And after a day of sightseeing, the courtyard garden is a suntrap and the perfect place to enjoy a refreshing drink or reviving cup of tea.

When you’re ready to venture out, you’ll find historic Conwy, Llandudno, Betws-y-Coed and a selection of beaches all within easy reach – however you like to spend your time, there’s something for everyone here. 

River Reverie

Slow down at this Welsh cottage set in the slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog fringing the mighty Snowdonia National Park. Inside, the original period features of this slate-clad home have been carefully restored to create a modern family home boasting comfortable interiors. The welcome hamper stuffed with local goodies is a nice touch, and outside, there's an enclosed terrace to savour morning cuppas. Parking on the road outside the cottage can be tricky, but with a free car park nearby, we don't think it's a dealbreaker. When you're ready for an adventure, Snowdonia National Park is just a short drive away. Or stay local and climb the surrounding Moelwynion Mountains to reach Stiniog –⁠ the views are worth the climb.

Once the former shooting residence of the Earl of Marlborough, this charming Grade II listed cottage in the heart of Snowdonia carefully stitches together history and contemporary design. Original slate floors and a huge inglenook fireplace contrast against modern additions such as the sleek roll-top bath and luxurious hot tub. The kitchen is the heart of the home, where your clan will spend time eating, drinking and playing card games if it tips it down outside. Light the wood-burning stove to keep the chill at bay or warm up with a brisk walk to the town of Blaenau Ffestiniog – you’ll get there in under an hour if you go at a decent pace. Spend sunny afternoons in the beer garden of the Pengwern pub, just a minute’s walk up the road, or jump in the car and take the ten-minute drive to the trout-filled Llyn Trawsfynydd. Hire a fishing rod or stroll around the water’s edge, stopping for a well-deserved cup of tea in the café along the way.

The building has been lovingly renovated, featuring an open-plan kitchen and snug area ideal for family living. When it comes to things to see and do, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to activities. We recommend heading into town to rent bikes and exploring some of the many biking routes on offer, which will have you riding past old quarries, lakes and rivers.
