But when you're in the mood to pick up the pace, you're just a short drive away from picturesque beaches – the closest is Paralia Kalives, about twenty minutes away. Tzitzifes is a small village, so while you won't find heaps on your doorstep, this region is right at the foot of the White Mountains and has excellent hiking trails. Plus, your host can arrange air taxi services, bike rentals, yacht charters and sightseeing tours to make your trip extra special.

Located in Almyrida, this villa is just 500 metres from a long stretch of sandy beach. Whilst the fishing village is quiet, its offers an array of cafes, shops and restaurants, all within walking distance. Featuring two private pools, one of which is designed especially for kids, you can rest assured that the little ones will always be kept entertained. The garden is particularly impressive thanks to a hot tub, lush lawn and Jacuzzi, but the inside of the home has its fair share of little luxuries, too. We love the basement here, where you’ll find a plush home cinema and a pool table.

This home in Xirosterni, a five-minute drive from Almyrida Beach, is the perfect place for a family or a small group of friends to spend quality time together. Outside, there's a play area for the little ones, comfortable loungers for sun worshipers and a barbecue area for the foodies. Though if you'd prefer to take a break from cooking, the villa’s chef can take care of dinner. The hot tub on the roof terrace is the best spot for sunset watching, and the pool is a welcome sight on warm afternoons. And if that wasn't enough, a breakfast basket is delivered daily.

Cool and calm, it's the ideal place to kick back and relax between adventures – however, we think you'll want to spend most of your time outside soaking up the Greek sunshine. Head up to the roof terrace to drink in the epic views across the countryside – stretch out on a lounger to catch some rays, or slip into the hot tub as twilight falls. 

The surrounding village has a couple of points of interest just a few minutes away from your front door. At one end you will find the white chapel of St John, perched on a rock, and at the other, there is a stone amphitheatre – if you visit at the right time, you might even have the opportunity to watch a play. Pick up local cheese and wine from the quaint on-site shop and enjoy on the shaded terrace. Head to the rooftop for sweeping views of the Cretan Sea – though should you fancy a closer look, take the nineteen-minute car ride to Kalyves and watch the tide ebb and flow from the shoreline. Return home in the evening for a serious pampering session in the steam room and a blissful night’s sleep beneath your bed’s airy canopy.

Nestled away in the Cretan countryside and overlooked by the island's famous White Mountains, this stone villa brings contemporary amenities and stylish design to a rustic spot on the map.

The villa itself looks fairly traditional from the outside, having been constructed from stone and wood. However, step behind the front door and you'll find modern living quarters dominated by natural light, rich wood finishes and sleek tiling. The double-height living room is particularly chic, but we're also especially fond of the Jacuzzi bathtub in one of the en-suites.

This being Crete, you'll most likely want to pass as much time outdoors as possible and there are plenty of ways to do just that here. The swimming pool in the middle of the grounds is sure to be a firm favourite on hot afternoons, while the surrounding loungers bring some resort-level relaxation. You can find some a few peaceful spots out in the garden, but none are as tranquil as the hammock hidden away underneath apricot trees.

Although the local village feels wonderfully isolated, there's a restaurant and shop only 400 metres away. Almyrida's sandy beach is only a 6km drive away when you're craving a dip in the sea, while the city of Chania is only 24km to the west as well.

Modern and chic, this home in the north-west of Crete offers a fabulous escape for groups of up to six. Recently built on the hillside below the village of Megala Chorafia, it's the perfect place to press pause and indulge in some serious relaxation. 

The large windows in the living room mean that you can savour the scenery while you sip your morning tea – and you’ll be eager to spend the rest of the day outside in the fresh air. With a terrace overlooking Souda Bay, you have a front-row view of the water – when the sun comes out, keep cool with regular dips in the infinity pool. If you need to feel the sea rush over your feet for it to feel like a holiday, drive just fifteen minutes to Paralia Kalives. Spend the day swimming in the clear sea and sunbathing before driving back to the villa to soak in the deep bathtub. 

The infinity pool is as inviting as they come, with a shallow end that’s perfect for reading a book in, or sipping a glass of wine as you watch the sun set. The pool is the focal point of the gorgeous terrace, which includes several different seating areas – whether you’re a sun-worshipper or prefer the shade, there’s a cosy corner you’ll appreciate.

Perched on the banks of Lake Kournas, this home has some of the most beautiful lake views, and when you’re out on the terrace at just the right angle, it might even give you the impression of floating right above the deep blue body of water.

Given all the outdoor space has to offer – there’s also views of the Chania mountains – we won’t blame you if you spend entire days poolside, only ever moving to top up your drink or apply another layer of sunscreen. With a table set up right on the terrace, you can even dine alfresco – we recommend meze platters of salty olives and feta cheese alongside a refreshing beer. 

After lazy mornings spent chatting and drinking coffee in the light living space, you can venture down to the lake to rent a paddleboat. Spend sunny afternoons on the shimmering water as the breeze rustles the leaves and when you’re done, head up to the local taverna for a bite to eat. 

Kalyvaki is a short drive away if spending sun-drenched days on a stretch of sandy beach sounds like your cup of tea, but exploring Crete’s beauty can also take you towards the waterfall, Quellen von Argiroupoli. Explore the island, eat, drink, and relax, and if nothing else, enjoy the sense of peace that goes along with staring out over a lake.

Situated on the shores of Souda Bay, with views over the White Mountains and the glistening sea, this gorgeous nineteenth-century stone villa has been lovingly restored by your hosts using traditional techniques. Formerly the home of the village winemaker, great care has been taken to preserve its character – even going as far as to repair the old wine press – while also bringing it into the twenty-first century.

In true Greek style, the interiors are painted bright white, with exposed wooden beams and tiled floors. However, the mid-century-inspired furniture and stunning light wood and marble kitchen bring a touch of contemporary class. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom and balcony, so that you can make the most of those views from the privacy of your room.

Step outside, and you'll find yourself in the heart of the traditional village of Xirosterni, surrounded by more beautiful stone houses. There's little in the way of tourist infrastructure here, so you can make the most of immersing yourself in local life. With that said, you're only a ten-minute drive from the charming waterfront tavernas, cafes and shops of Almyrida beach.

While the stone arches and wooden beams are charming, the mezzanine bedroom areas won't be for everyone. The villa is built from stone and decorated in a traditional style. Best of all, it’s in a huge plot of land with no neighbours – it’s an absolute haven of peace, quiet and relaxation. When you wake up in the morning your toughest decision will be which balcony to drink your coffee on, or possibly whether to sunbathe on a sun lounger or in a hammock. Will the children tire themselves out in the wheelchair-accessible heated pool, the playground, or playing football on the mini footy field? 

A lovely traditional stone kitchen makes cooking a breeze, but you might like to arrange for a private chef to cook for you anyway. Enjoy beautifully prepared Cretan dishes outside at the covered dining table – gluten-free meals can be provided on request. There’s also a fabulous barbecue area, so your chef could whip up a grilled feast while you and your guests sip cocktails on the terrace and admire the colourful sunsets. 

You have everything you need right at your fingertips here, but if you do fancy exploring Crete, you’re in a great location for it. Almyrida beach is just ten minutes away by car, while the attractive old town of Chania is thirty-seven minutes away. Meander along the winding streets with an ice cream, or find an alfresco table at a charming taverna by the port. When you return to the villa, settle into the Jacuzzi for a soak and see which constellations you can spot in the twinkling night sky.

While we're big fans of the sophisticated design inside, there's no doubt that the outside space is the star. A bevvy of balconies, terraces, and a private infinity pool make the most of this home's spellbinding Aegean Sea views. Hiring a car is essential here, but you'll be well-placed to explore the island. Fancy a beach day? Head to the small but stunning Koutalas Beach, 3 kilometres away. Crave a bit of culture? Make the short drive to Chania and stroll along the Venetian Port, where restaurants, boutiques, and many historical monuments await.

Paradise on the Acropolis

This villa sits just inland from Crete’s beach-fringed north coast, a short drive from the buzzing city of Chania. A fifteen-minute drive sees you at the secluded Omprogialos Beach, or drift a little further afield (a twenty-minute drive) to Koutalas Beach. Chania is a forty-minute drive, which is ideal if you’re flying in to Chania Airport.

The villa itself sits in glorious isolation, with nothing but the swish of olive trees and cheep of birds to fill your days. Sitting in turquoise splendour against the rust-red landscape, the swimming pool is crying out for a dip in the heat of the day. Settle on a sunlounger, or head to te bubbling hot tub for a soak. There’s shaded dining on the terrace and a built-in stone barbecue, but our favourite spot has to be the secluded sofa terrace, swathed with white curtains for a private moment.

A dedicated wine fridge ensures your pinot grigio stays cool and crisp. Bedrooms open up to private balconies, or have doors onto the terrace, so you can awake every morning to glorious sunshine streaming through glass doors.

From the private infinity pool to the open-plan living area, this villa puts its showstopping Aegean vistas front and centre. Inside, floor-to-ceiling windows flood each room with natural light and show off the scenery. Even the bedrooms have a glimpse of the blue horizon. Of course, the terrace is the best spot to take advantage of the views, with its array of lounge chairs perfect for sunbathing and a covered terrace ideal for sunset dinners.
