It’s in the small village of Kontomari, where you can drink in shady taverns and sample Crete’s authentic cuisine, and a 20-minute drive will bring you to the main town of Chania which is filled with medieval architecture, archeological museums, and an ancient harbour. Not that the location is this home’s only selling point; you could happily enjoy an entire holiday without ever leaving the chic interiors or venturing further than the private pool. A playhouse and table tennis in the garden will keep kids of all ages happy while you catch a quiet hour on the terrace overlooking the pool with a good book. Plus, outdoor dining means even you won’t miss the spectacular Cretan sunsets if you linger over dinner.

We recommend taking a day-trip to Balos Lagoon, which is fifty-five minutes away – it’s been named one of the best beaches in the world, so it’s well worth the journey.

Its interior is nothing short of breathtaking, with a welcoming open layout on the ground floor that included a comfortable seating area overlooking the garden, an elegant wooden dining table that sits beneath a double-height ceiling, and a sleek kitchen equipped with everything you (or your private chef) could need to create culinary magic at mealtimes.

Four en-suite bedrooms are dotted throughout the home, providing you with some much-needed privacy from time to time. All open up directly to the outdoors – either to the immaculate garden or panoramic balconies that look out over the shining sea and Agii Theodori island, depending on the floor. Given the ease of access to the outside spaces, we imagine you'll spend plenty of time stretched out on poolside loungers or curled up in a hanging chair with a good book. Meanwhile, an outdoor dining area is ideal for breakfast in the cool morning air or serving up sumptuous evening meals as the sun drops behind the nearby mountains.

Fancy a change of scenery? The villa is well placed to enjoy the bars and restaurants of Platanias. Take your pick from casual beachside bites to creative takes on Cretan classics along the main stretch. Alternatively, drive along the coast to Chania for a chance to explore its maze-like old town before taking a seat at one of the many restaurants set around its beautiful 14th-century Venetian harbour.

From the near-constant cloudless sky to the crystalline Aegean Sea and the shimmering private swimming pool – this place is an ode to the colour blue. Three kilometres away, you’ll find the calm shallows of the nearest sandy beach and the charming town of Chania is a short drive along the coast. Right on your doorstep (within 200 metres), you’ve got cafés, bakeries, tavernas and a mini market to stock up on supplies.

If you’re not cooling off from the Crete sun in the swimming pool, our favourite spot is the table and chairs on the covered veranda, facing a panorama of Crete’s stunning coastline. This is a great spot to dine of an evening. Inside, the home is split between two apartments, each with its own kitchen and living room. On the first floor, the living room is a grand space with marble floor, candelabra and velvety tufted sofas. Two full kitchens across the whole home mean it’s easy to cater for huge group meals and two living rooms give everyone enough space to spread out. The peace and quiet are blissful in bedrooms and each room has its own access to the terrace or a first-floor balcony.

There are some views that are so beautiful that they stop you dead in your tracks and leave you lost for words. You'll find one such panorama at this villa in northwestern Crete – step out onto the balcony and you're treated to a vista that takes in everything from the White Mountains and the Aegean Sea to the city of Chania in the distance.

However, there's more to this address than these majestic surroundings. We're smitten with the outdoor space, which has you covered for the sort of sunny days that Crete enjoys in spades. What could be more relaxing than swimming in the pool, dining on the terrace and sneaking in a nap in the hammock?

The home itself lies on the traditional side of things, with patches of stonework dotted across the walls and terracotta tiling underfoot. It's just as easy to get cosy inside too, thanks to the corner hydromassage bathtubs and the feature fireplace in the kitchen.

Although the address is certainly isolated, it doesn't take very long to reach things to see and do on the island. The nearest beach, for example, can be found 4km away in Tavronitis, which has a few shops and restaurants as well. In the opposite direction, you can embark upon hilltop walks and stop off at quaint villages along the way.

It’s in a rural setting 4 kilometres above the village of Tavronitis, within easy reach of Chania – the old town is well worth a visit. We think it's essential to have a car to get the most out of your stay. The villa is traditional in style but has everything you might need for a comfortable stay – we love the mature gardens, the swimming pool, and the sun deck. Kids will love having a games room to take over, while grown-ups will enjoy cooking on the pizza oven and dining alfresco.

With plenty of space outside, we encourage spending as much time out here as possible. Let the sea-salt breeze wash over you as you dine alfresco or lie back in one of the sun loungers. Gather in and around the pool to play games, run around on the small lawn, and enjoy nibbles along with an ice-cold beer as your feet dangle into the cool water. When you need a moment to yourself, how about a trip up to the balcony where you can savour a cup of coffee as you gaze out over the deep blue ocean views? 

After an evening meal – preferably cooked in the outdoor kitchen area – you can head inside to treat yourself to a luxurious bath. Afterwards, gather in the living space for a family movie night or crack out some of the board games you brought along.

Live off the land when you stay at this gorgeous home on a verdant three-acre farm in Crete. There are vines laden with grapes, as well as vegetables and avocados, quince, pomegranate, bananas and apricot trees – so it's easy to get your five a day here. 

There are plenty of herbs such as lavender, thyme and marjoram to flavour your cooking or G&Ts too. In the modern kitchen, when you arrive, you'll find some homemade wine and honey from your lovely host's own beehives, as well as a fruit basket.

Spend idyllic days sat by the pool, taking in the hillside views, then enjoy a lunch of fresh produce on the terrace. Inside, crisp white, greys and moss greens create a fresh vibe. We love the high vaulted ceilings, as well as the countryside vistas from the windows.

When you want to explore the area, there are a range of attractions nearby. Limnoupolis, a water park, is two miles away, while the Botanical Park of Crete is just over three miles. The old Venetian port of Chania, on the other hand, is just over five miles from this home. If you prefer to relax by the sea, then Stalos Beach is about five minutes in the car. Or, it's a ten-minute stroll to the pretty Agia Lake.

Against this beautiful backdrop, you're spoilt for ways to pass summer days. The curvy swimming pool will be a faithful companion during the hottest part of the afternoon and there's even an adjoining children's section so little 'uns can join in on the fun. Surrounding this, you'll find loungers on which to soak up some rays, as well as a barbecue and dining table ready and waiting for alfresco feasts.

Although it's certainly a show-stealing outdoor space, we're wowed by the villa's interior, too. Traditional aspects, such as the exposed stonework and terracotta tiles, lend a homely charm, while the large windows let in lots of natural light – as well as looking out to that view. We also like the pair of smartly tiled bathtubs that will sing to those who love nothing more than a long and unrushed sofa, as well as the ping-pong table for the ultra-competitive among the group.

With the sea this close to the house, you probably don't need us to tell you that the beach can be reached in a matter of seconds. In the wider area, you're well served for restaurants and taverns, while the 13th-century Gonia Monastery lies just up the coastline and is well worth a visit. The same can be said for the city of Chania, 23km in the opposite direction.
