Nestled away in the Cretan countryside and overlooked by the island's famous White Mountains, this stone villa brings contemporary amenities and stylish design to a rustic spot on the map.

The villa itself looks fairly traditional from the outside, having been constructed from stone and wood. However, step behind the front door and you'll find modern living quarters dominated by natural light, rich wood finishes and sleek tiling. The double-height living room is particularly chic, but we're also especially fond of the Jacuzzi bathtub in one of the en-suites.

This being Crete, you'll most likely want to pass as much time outdoors as possible and there are plenty of ways to do just that here. The swimming pool in the middle of the grounds is sure to be a firm favourite on hot afternoons, while the surrounding loungers bring some resort-level relaxation. You can find some a few peaceful spots out in the garden, but none are as tranquil as the hammock hidden away underneath apricot trees.

Although the local village feels wonderfully isolated, there's a restaurant and shop only 400 metres away. Almyrida's sandy beach is only a 6km drive away when you're craving a dip in the sea, while the city of Chania is only 24km to the west as well.

Situated on the shores of Souda Bay, with views over the White Mountains and the glistening sea, this gorgeous nineteenth-century stone villa has been lovingly restored by your hosts using traditional techniques. Formerly the home of the village winemaker, great care has been taken to preserve its character – even going as far as to repair the old wine press – while also bringing it into the twenty-first century.

In true Greek style, the interiors are painted bright white, with exposed wooden beams and tiled floors. However, the mid-century-inspired furniture and stunning light wood and marble kitchen bring a touch of contemporary class. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom and balcony, so that you can make the most of those views from the privacy of your room.

Step outside, and you'll find yourself in the heart of the traditional village of Xirosterni, surrounded by more beautiful stone houses. There's little in the way of tourist infrastructure here, so you can make the most of immersing yourself in local life. With that said, you're only a ten-minute drive from the charming waterfront tavernas, cafes and shops of Almyrida beach.

The villa is built from stone and decorated in a traditional style. Best of all, it’s in a huge plot of land with no neighbours – it’s an absolute haven of peace, quiet and relaxation. When you wake up in the morning your toughest decision will be which balcony to drink your coffee on, or possibly whether to sunbathe on a sun lounger or in a hammock. Will the children tire themselves out in the wheelchair-accessible heated pool, the playground, or playing football on the mini footy field? 

A lovely traditional stone kitchen makes cooking a breeze, but you might like to arrange for a private chef to cook for you anyway. Enjoy beautifully prepared Cretan dishes outside at the covered dining table – gluten-free meals can be provided on request. There’s also a fabulous barbecue area, so your chef could whip up a grilled feast while you and your guests sip cocktails on the terrace and admire the colourful sunsets. 

You have everything you need right at your fingertips here, but if you do fancy exploring Crete, you’re in a great location for it. Almyrida beach is just ten minutes away by car, while the attractive old town of Chania is thirty-seven minutes away. Meander along the winding streets with an ice cream, or find an alfresco table at a charming taverna by the port. When you return to the villa, settle into the Jacuzzi for a soak and see which constellations you can spot in the twinkling night sky.

Whilst the fishing village is quiet, its offers an array of cafes, shops and restaurants, all within walking distance. Featuring two private pools, one of which is designed especially for kids, you can rest assured that the little ones will always be kept entertained. The garden is particularly impressive thanks to a hot tub, lush lawn and Jacuzzi, but the inside of the home has its fair share of little luxuries, too. We love the basement here, where you’ll find a plush home cinema and a pool table.

Nestled in the village of Maheri, deep in the Cretean countryside, you'll find this charming home. Built using stone and wood, it fits into its surroundings perfectly and offers a wonderful escape from everyday life for families or small groups of friends. 

From the ceiling beams to the arches leading you from the living space to the dining room, there are plenty of traditional touches to admire inside. Cool and calm, it's the ideal place to kick back and relax between adventures – however, we think you'll want to spend most of your time outside soaking up the Greek sunshine. Head up to the roof terrace to drink in the epic views across the countryside – stretch out on a lounger to catch some rays, or slip into the hot tub as twilight falls. 

The surrounding village has a couple of points of interest just a few minutes away from your front door. At one end you will find the white chapel of St John, perched on a rock, and at the other, there is a stone amphitheatre – if you visit at the right time, you might even have the opportunity to watch a play. And, should you fancy a day at the beach, the sands of Kalyves are just a 5km drive away, where you can swim in the glittering crystal clear waters.

This villa sits just inland from Crete’s beach-fringed north coast, a short drive from the buzzing city of Chania. A fifteen-minute drive sees you at the secluded Omprogialos Beach, or drift a little further afield (a twenty-minute drive) to Koutalas Beach. Chania is a forty-minute drive, which is ideal if you’re flying in to Chania Airport.

The villa itself sits in glorious isolation, with nothing but the swish of olive trees and cheep of birds to fill your days. Sitting in turquoise splendour against the rust-red landscape, the swimming pool is crying out for a dip in the heat of the day. Settle on a sunlounger, or head to te bubbling hot tub for a soak. Buried in lush greenery with views of Almyrida Bay, this pink-painted pad ticks all of our boxes. We’ll begin with the outside space, where a shaded terrace with a dining set-up calls for moments spent all together, passing around dishes of Cretan cuisine and sharing bottles of traditional tsikoudia. Then there’s the glittering pool, the antidote to long, hot afternoons. Swim unhurried laps or just float about in the cool water. 

After a raucous game of table tennis, doze off in the hammock for a while before treating yourself to a long soak in the hot tub on the roof terrace. Better still, indulge in a serious pamper session in the private sauna. 

Inside, it’s understated and comfortable, with a touch of drama courtesy of the double-height ceilings and eye-catching artwork. Sumptuous beds guarantee a peaceful night’s sleep, while the on-site gym ensures invigorating mornings. 

If exploring is on the agenda, jump in the car to Koutalas beach to snorkel in the crystal clear shallows. For the divers among you, Elephant Cave is unmissable. And when the day draws to a close, head to Chania for some of the best seafood on the island.

The house dates back to the 1890s, so you'll find plenty of character inside and out. Whether you're snoozing in the beds, rustling up breakfast in the kitchen or watching something entertaining on the telly, you'll be able to switch off and unwind with ease. 

But when you're in the mood to pick up the pace, you're just a short drive away from picturesque beaches – the closest is Paralia Kalives, about twenty minutes away. Tzitzifes is a small village, so while you won't find heaps on your doorstep, this region is right at the foot of the White Mountains and has excellent hiking trails. Plus, your host can arrange air taxi services, bike rentals, yacht charters and sightseeing tours to make your trip extra special.

Pick up local cheese and wine from the quaint on-site shop and enjoy on the shaded terrace. Head to the rooftop for sweeping views of the Cretan Sea – though should you fancy a closer look, take the nineteen-minute car ride to Kalyves and watch the tide ebb and flow from the shoreline. Return home in the evening for a serious pampering session in the steam room and a blissful night’s sleep beneath your bed’s airy canopy.

And when you tire of alfresco meals in the dappled gardens, the local tavernas do a great souvlaki we’ve heard (brave among you will take a hillside hike lasting about 30 minutes), but even driving here is a treat given it’s so picture-worthy.

Hiring a car is essential here, but you'll be well-placed to explore the island. Fancy a beach day? Head to the small but stunning Koutalas Beach, 3 kilometres away. Crave a bit of culture? Make the short drive to Chania and stroll along the Venetian Port, where restaurants, boutiques, and many historical monuments await.

Offering stunning northern views of the Aegean Sea, this home is perfect for lovers of sunsets and sunrises – and that must be just about everyone. The pool area is only shared with one other home, so you'll have plenty of space to soak up the sun, while the shaded terrace lets you retire for cocktails when you need a break. Inside, some of the home's design choices were a little eclectic for our tastes, but the large kitchen is a nice touch. When it's time to explore, the nearest beach is just a 150-metre stroll along a private path.
