While there’s a kitchenette here, it’s better suited to light bites than large meals. Fortunately, the restaurants of Agios Nikolaos are a short drive away.

Ideally located in central ​​Agios Nikolaos, this petite apartment is ideal for those looking to explore the area’s bustling harbour and beaches. A modern minimalist interior, a sofa bed for flexible sleeping arrangements and a private balcony with sea views are features we appreciate. And though the open-plan en-suite won’t be to everyone’s taste, the window-side tub is hard to pass up. With your host able to arrange a plethora of extra services (for a fee), including private chefs, boat excursions and beauty treatments, you’re in for a relaxing, carefree stay.

Akti Koundourou Beach is just a few steps away, with the lively harbour a short walk from your door. Another highlight is the freestanding bathtub, while we appreciate the high-end touch that's been given to the entire apartment. Only a small kitchenette is available, so don't expect to cook big meals here – that said, you've got plenty of dining options practically on your doorstep.

Set just a short flip-flop from the sandy shores of Ammoudi Beach in Zakynthos –⁠ this newly-built apartment is tailor-made for easy holidays by the sea. The private terrace with views of nearby Agios Nikolaos Bay is the showstopper here. It’s a prime spot for morning breakfasts, and the bakery at the end of the road can help with supplies. The second bedroom handily doubles as a study space. However, if you’re using it as a bedroom, two guests will share a double sofa bed which may be better suited to children sharing or one adult.

Spread across three floors, this stone-built villa is ideal for family getaways to Greece. Though it might not feel the most modern in terms of decor, this home is comfortable, spacious, and well-equipped. But it's the outdoor space that drew our eye here in the first place. With ample seating around the private pool and a shaded table for alfresco meals, this is a sun-lovers dream. The beaches along Mirabello Bay, including a sandy Almyros Beach, can be found only minutes away.

Just a Bit of Bliss

This apartment is situated just 400 metres from the centre of Agios Nikolaos on the beautiful Bay of Mirabello. Explore the small harbour or the circular Voulismeni Lake with its cafes and restaurants. Alternatively, spend the day on one of the nearby beaches of Ammos and Almiros. Back at this modern apartment, whilst there is a patio area, it’s part of a larger shared terrace with your neighbours, so this place won’t suit you if you’re looking for more outside space.

For a convenient base in Agios Nikolaos, you can’t do much better than this apartment. It’s just 100 metres from Paralia Kitroplatia, and is also close to Ammos Beach. You’ll likely spend most of your time on the balcony, admiring the sea view and soaking up the sun. The apartment is spread over two floors, with one bedroom on the top floor, ideal for a couple seeking a bit more privacy. There’s plenty of space here for everyone to spread out, and the kitchen and dining area means you can easily cook at home.

Stay just 400 metres from the centre of Agios Nikolaos on the gorgeous Bay of Mirabello, when you choose this well-placed apartment. There’s a small harbour to explore or watch the world go by at one of the cafés and restaurants lining the shores of the Voulismeni Lake. For beach lovers, there are the nearby beaches of Ammos and Almiros. The apartment itself is modern, but there are stairs to climb (something to bear in mind if you have limited mobility). Also, this home has a designated outdoor seating area on a shared terrace, but it’s not really private, so you’ll need to be willing to chat with the neighbours.

This villa is all about the view. It’s on a small hillside in Agios Nikolaos, looking out over Mirabello Bay. The terrace, with its private infinity pool, is a dreamy spot for gazing out at the blue sea. There’s also a pergola and a barbecue with an alfresco dining area. Inside, you’ll find luxuries like the Finnish sauna, which may come in handy after a workout – there’s exercise equipment here, along with a small basketball court. For days at the beach, you need only walk 200m to reach the Blue Flag-awarded Havania Beach. One guest will be on a sofa bed, which may not be suitable for everyone.

One of four similar villas within a serviced complex, this place is ideal for those who want to be able to walk into town, stroll to the beach in minutes, have access to all manner of hotel-style facilities and yet enjoy the comfort of a private swimming pool. It sits just outside the coastal town of Agios Nikolaos, within walking distance of the charming waterfront. The villa’s complex boasts a shared swimming pool, fitness centre and spa, cinema and sports facilities. But those who value privacy can spend days by the villa’s own swimming pool, taking in the view of the Aegean Sea. The upper terrace is the perfect spot for sundowners or evening meals and the interior has everything you need for self-catering.

At first glance, this villa perched on top of a Cretan cliff is an architectural marvel, but the most impressive aspects lie beyond its appearance. The architects behind the project used ecologically sensitive practices during construction, from natural paints and installing energy-efficient fittings to choosing sustainably sourced stone.

This should give you a sense of quiet satisfaction while you wind back and relax here, which is remarkably easy to do. The infinity pool has glorious views of Mirabello Bay, as well as cascading waterfalls and a Jacuzzi. After a dip, there are numerous terraces on which to take a breather, including a pergola with a barbecue underneath if you're feeling a little peckish.

In this corner of western Crete, you're not only spoiled for beaches, but history abounds in this area — the nearby island of Spinalonga can be reached by boat from Elounda and has an impressive fortress from its time under Venetian occupation.

Fully staffed with a maid, chef and a team of gardeners, you need not lift a finger but keen cooks will enjoy getting to grips with the well-equipped kitchen and the barbecue, or just head into town for a meal at one of the many excellent restaurants. Just be sure to be back in time to see the sunset over the sea from your garden – it's really something special.

Location-wise, the centre of Elounda and its wide sandy beach and seafront restaurants are just a two-kilometre stroll downhill –⁠ and you can always hop in a taxi on your way back home later.

Except for a mezzanine bedroom, the villa is otherwise laid out on a single level with carefully curated bedrooms incorporating stone and wood into their decor, and a pair of sleek bathrooms – one of which has an ever-so-tempting tub.

As soon as we saw that infinity pool – and the stunning view beyond – we were sold. The private pool, sauna and workout area offer the chance to unwind in complete privacy. And yet, being on a complex, there's plenty of opportunity to mingle and enjoy the shared amenities here, too – this includes the on-site creche, ideal if you're travelling with children. On top of that, you'll find two restaurants and a bar (one serving up your complimentary breakfast each morning), and you'll have access to the private beach club, accessible by a free shuttle bus. And with charming spots such as the nearby fishing village of Elounda a short drive away, you'll find plenty to do.

If you’re looking for the comfort of your private home, but with the convenience of a hotel, then House of Views has your name written all over it. Located within a tranquil spot in a small boutique villa-hotel complex, and just a short distance from the popular Crete town of Elounda, this indulgent abode truly is the best of both worlds. You’ll have exclusive access to the private beach club just a ten minute drive away, as well as one of the finest golf courses in the region. Back home, days are best spent soaking up the sensational seaside vistas of the Gulf of Mirabello from your private infinity-edge pool. The french-style furniture adds plenty of sophistication and comfort to its open-plan interior living spaces. Our favourite spot in the home is unquestionably the master suite’s marble bathroom – the hand-painted ceiling really is something else.

Nestled on the side of a hill with a pretty view of the sparkling Aegean Sea, this villa is an excellent option for a large group looking for a week or so of pure escapism.

You'll feel a sense of peace as soon as you cross the stone bridge leading to the property and enter the gardens filled with olive trees and Mediterranean foliage. Head around to the rear of the address and you'll find a pair of infinity swimming pools with loungers and a hammock arranged invitingly around the sides. There's also a barbecue and plenty of terraces on which to enjoy food fresh off the grill.

It's not just the swimming pools that come in twos — there are two separate homes inside, each with a kitchen and lounge, which offers extra flexibility. Both have been treated to the same contemporary styling, with white walls, eye-catching lighting fixtures and an open fireplace for when after the sun's gone down. 

As you would hope with such proximity to the sea, there's a superb range of beaches nearby, starting from as close as five minutes' drive away. The resort town of Agios Nikolaos only takes eighteen minutes to reach in the car.

Inside is elegantly decorated, but most of your attention will be on the wonderful vistas. One of our favourite spots is this villa’s attic – it’s a secluded spot, furnished with a desk and sitting area and it overlooks the azure waters of the private sandy beach. This home is all about those mood-enhancing views. You can soak it all in from the swimming pool (heated upon request), or whilst sipping drinks on the balcony. There’s also an outdoor sauna and plenty of chill-out spots to spread out and spend quality time together. Some of the furnishings are a little dated, but we think the sea views more than makeup for it. And for explorations further afield, it’s a short walk to the nearest beach (Havania is only 250 metres away), while the picturesque city of Agios Nikolaos is a short drive away.
