The heated swimming pool has massage jets and a waterfall feature. Whether you’re determined to get your daily laps in or prefer to float serenely as you watch yachts sail by, you’re bound to spend a lot of your time in the pool. There are plenty of comfy sun loungers dotted around, with space to sunbathe in quiet corners or as a group. But as it's probably the leading reason visitors flock to this corner of the Dalmatian coast, we'll start with the view. Set high above the Old Town, in the most sought-after part of Dubrovnik, it looks out over that postcard-perfect vista – just as it has for centuries. If its old stone walls could talk, it could tell us tales of this dramatic city, reaching back to the Renaissance. 

Today, the interior has been respectfully brought up to 21st Century expectations, with smart, neutral decor and a mix of contemporary and classical furnishings giving it a stylish, sophisticated look. Bright and comfortable, the living and dining space is a sociable room with incredible views. There's a fully equipped kitchen if you're cooking at home and a wine cellar in the basement, or you can cook in the traditional summer method – outside on the barbecue.

Out here, you’ve got a private pool to cool off and, one level up, a sunken Jacuzzi tub for a soothing soak. We love the interior, where the light fitting above the dining table looks like an installation in a modern art gallery, and the armchairs could feature in a mid-century museum. Post breakfast, it's time to get out and explore. Dubrovnik offers plenty to see and do, from pretty beaches to gothic towns. If you're into hiking, you simply have to take a day trip to Mljet island– it's around an hour away by boat. The beauty of the island's National Park is enchanting, thanks to dense, unspoilt forest, ancient ruins and saltwater lakes. Mljet is one of the few Croatian National Parks that permits swimming, so be sure to experience a dip in the deep blue pools and make the most of it.

Before you head home, pick up some of the fresh seafood that Dubrovnik is famed for. The fully-equipped kitchen allows you to get creative and try cooking some Croatian dishes – grilled fish is a local delicacy and highly recommended. Tuck in alfresco around the outdoor dining table, then relax with a cooling dip in the infinity pool. Make sure you get front row seats to the spectacular sunset by going up to the balcony – the ocean views from up there are truly breathtaking.

In the heart of Dubrovnik, this modern apartment is within walking distance from all the action. Just a fifteen-minute stroll from Dubrovnik Old Town and five from Bellevue Beach, it’s a great base to come home to after discovering the many shops, restaurants and landmarks the city has to offer. One of our favourite parts is the terrace with its wonderful sea views, while a separate balcony is also shared between two bedrooms. Desks in each bedroom make working from home easy – and you can pay to use the spa, pool and fitness facilities at a nearby hotel. No wonder it caught our eye.

Overlooking Trstenik's waterfront, this villa boasts gorgeous sea views and amenities for entertainment and relaxation. A free cot can be provided for little ones so we think it's a great choice for families, and kids will love the pool. The alfresco dining space and the built-in brick barbecue elevate the outdoors, and you'll find exercise equipment and a pool table in the fitness centre, plus a private sauna. We recommend hiring a car here – the nearest beach is concrete so may not be suitable for children, but sandy beaches and Trstenik's shops and restaurants are an easy drive away.
