Look up ‘idyllic’ in the dictionary and you’ll probably find a picture of this dreamy home we spotted on the outskirts of Neviano, deep in the heart of rural Puglia. Surrounded by ancient pines and fragrant geraniums, this place is the perfect setting for a relaxing holiday with family or friends, offering a total escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. 

Inside, neutral tones and cool, tile floors give this home a rustic quality which is only heightened by the gorgeous, stone fireplace that acts as a focal point for the open-plan living area. As much as we love the interior though, it’s the outside space that really captured our imagination, boasting an elegant patio with plenty of sun loungers for making the most of the Italian sunshine. Settle in for a day of sunbathing or slip into your swimming costume and cool off with a quick dip in the pool before firing up the grill for an alfresco lunch with all your favourite people. Delizioso!

If you fancy getting out and about during your stay, you’re within easy reach of Nardò and Gallipoli, two of Puglia’s best-known towns. Set off for a day of sightseeing or make a beeline for the nearest beach and spend the afternoon topping up your tan by the Ionian Sea before heading home for an evening aperitivo. Even before you arrive at this striking and historic masseria farmhouse, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Located close to ancient gates that were built to protect the medieval town of Galatina from attack and with areas dating back to the sixteenth century, Torre Galatina really gives off a sense of history and laidback grandeur. Summer days can be spend outdoors in the pretty gardens and plenty of charming chill-out zones. And let’s not forget about the 16th-century tower that houses a tasteful bedroom, private living area and terrace. We particularly enjoyed gazing at the scenic views from here.

This Art Nouveau-style villa dates back to the early 18th century and is a rare gem for those who love art and design. Outside, you’ll find an elegant portico with columns made of Lecce stone, as well as a courtyard with a private pool. And inside, the living room looks almost like a museum, with large purple stained glass windows reflecting light onto stark white furniture. Enjoy a family meal in the opulent dining area which exudes timeless charm with printed wallpaper and a large table with contrasting modern transparent chairs. Coupled with white-wash walls and stone ceilings, there are elements that will make you think of a grand cathedral. Cool and comfortable, the bedrooms are a lovely peaceful sanctuary from the daytime sun. We love how there is a gentle nod to contemporary style with backlighting on some stunning antique features.
 
On your doorstep, you will be greeted by many restaurants. Follow the smell of garlic and a large bowl of pasta, with a bottle of chilled wine, will await. The traditional features of your home-away-from-home are mirrored beautifully as you meander through the local cobbled streets, which are equally as charming as they are sophisticated. Alongside historical features such as traditional shutters, the home has pops of modernity, from the bright artwork to the blue chandeliers.  Unusually for this packed-in city, this home has a private swimming pool – perfect for cooling off in the height of Puglia's summer. The sheltered terrace looks over the pool and we love the idea of long lunches or late dinners with friends here. Alternatively, Lecce's many seafood restaurants are only a short stroll along the cobbled streets. The house is in the centre of the city, with Roman amphitheatres, medieval castles, and grand cathedrals all jostling for space. On warmer days, it's less than a thirty-minute drive to the Mediterranean and many seaside tavernas.

Midsummer Daydreams

Set less than one hundred metres from Ceglie Messapica's bustling pedestrianised hub and just an easy drive from the coast and Ostuni, the location of this apartment is spot-on. While the period home's vaulted ceilings and exposed stonework are impressive, there are a few compromises to make. Expect a small kitchenette that's better suited to lighter bites rather than large slap-up meals, and there's no outdoor space to speak of. But for a bolthole this characterful, we can forgive that.

You'll find this ground-floor apartment in the historic heart of Lecce. All the must-haves and must-sees are within strolling distance here – Piazza Mazzini is five minutes away, Castello Carlo is walkable in ten, and countless bars, restaurants, and shops are nearby. Though the apartment lacks a living area, it's a good option for those keen to spend all their time exploring. Some rooms lack natural light, but there's a private patio where you can enjoy a glass of local wine. All three bedrooms are comfortable, and two have desks for remote workers – just note that the single is accessed through bedroom two.

One glance at the panoramas and you'll see why this apartment caught our eye. Facing the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea, you'll have a birds-eye look across Gallipoli. Here, you'll wake up to the sun-kissed sea views each morning before enjoying an alfresco breakfast on the private terrace. After a stint at the local beach or a wander around Gallipoli's narrow streets, decompress back home with a glass of wine as the sun dips below the coastline. The decor may be a bit plain, and there isn't a proper living space, but we think that's a fair compromise.

Vaulted ceilings and original tiles underfoot are a nod to this 18th-century home’s former glory, and keep things naturally cool inside. Each bedroom has its own style and there’s a dedicated office room for those working remotely. But it’s the outdoor space that captivated us, with a big swimming pool carved from local stone and loads of comfortable places to catch the sun (or laze in the shade) on patios and terraces. This villa is in the centre of Diso, a historical Salento village two kilometres from the sea with a small shop and cafes within walking distance.
