Vaulted ceilings and original tiles underfoot are a nod to this 18th-century home’s former glory, and keep things naturally cool inside. Each bedroom has its own style and there’s a dedicated office room for those working remotely. But it’s the outdoor space that captivated us, with a big swimming pool carved from local stone and loads of comfortable places to catch the sun (or laze in the shade) on patios and terraces. This villa is in the centre of Diso, a historical Salento village two kilometres from the sea with a small shop and cafes within walking distance.

This villa sits just above Puglia’s coast, with a view out over the sea from the suntrap of a rooftop terrace, lounger-strewn lawn and from the cooling water of the private pool. What’s more, steps lead directly from the garden to a swim platform on the Ionian Sea and there’s beach club next door – just remember it’s a steep way down, so it’s steep back up again. It’s fairly minimalist inside, keeping things breezy and cool (just what you want in the Puglian heat). The kitchen is on the rustic side. Bedrooms are simple and comfortable, and they all face the sea.

Once you’re suitably settled, take the seven-minute walk to the centre of Castro and indulge in its delicious locally-sourced seafood after a day of shopping or bar hopping. By car, you’re just a forty-five-minute drive from the beautiful city of Lecce – home to magnificent baroque buildings, you’ll quickly discover why it’s referred to as ‘the Florence of the South’.

Situated in Lecce's hamlet of Salignano, this villa boasts a heated private pool and a lovely garden with space for sitting out in the sunshine or dining in the shade. The decor here is quite traditional and perhaps won't be to everyone's taste, but we think the location is great. The ancient Heroon Centopietre, an enigmatic tomb of the noble hero Gimignano, is a short walk away, while the Ionian Sea is easily reached by car, whether you head west to the Marina di San Gregorio beach or east to Il Ciolo.

A Fantastic Place

For a unique and memorable stay in Brindisi, this stunning villa is an excellent option. You’ll be housed in a wonderful Trulli – the quirky conical-roofed homes most often found in Puglia and Brindisi. Beneath its coned roof, the villa is a stylish place to stay. The unusual shape of the home means there are cosy corners for you to curl up in, as well as a high-ceilinged dining room that’s the heart of the home. 

Of course, you’ll likely be hoping for warm weather, so will probably spend most of your time outside. Sit out in the sunshine, revelling in the glorious countryside views before going for a dip in the private swimming pool. Set less than one hundred metres from Ceglie Messapica's bustling pedestrianised hub and just an easy drive from the coast and Ostuni, the location of this apartment is spot-on. While the period home's vaulted ceilings and exposed stonework are impressive, there are a few compromises to make. Expect a small kitchenette that's better suited to lighter bites rather than large slap-up meals, and there's no outdoor space to speak of. But for a bolthole this characterful, we can forgive that.

It's not a trip to Puglia without a stay in a trullo house, and this is a gorgeous one. Located in the rolling countryside, within easy reach of some of the area's historic towns, it's a great place to begin your Italian adventures. 

The traditional stone building has plenty of original touches – you'll love the conical roofs and decorative fireplace that provides a rustic charm. When you get hungry, you can head to the kitchen and cook up your favourite pasta dishes using fresh local ingredients. And, there's no better place to serve up your culinary creations than outside on the patio, as you breathe in the fresh air and admire the lush greenery surrounding you. 

When you fancy a day trip, there are plenty of places to visit in the surrounding area. The magnificent white city of Ostuni is around twenty minutes away by car, where you can stroll through the labyrinthine old quarter. The hilltop town of Martina Franca is around twenty-five minutes away, and if you fancy a day at the beach then you can drive to the coast in just over half an hour.

You’ll find it to the north of the city centre, tucked down a quiet street but still within easy reach of a whole host of bars and restaurants for eating out. The terrace is the star of the show, boasting sweeping views of the Puglian coast, but the apartment as a whole feels warm and homely, making it exactly the kind of place you’ll want to chill out in after a busy day of sightseeing.

Magnificent vaulted ceilings, original frescoes, and age-old cement tiled floors give you a taste of the region's past while the private roof terrace offers spectacular views out across the Ionian Sea. Accessed via an internal staircase, this is the perfect place to relax come morning, noon or night-time. You’ll want to laze on the sunbed before cooling off under the outdoor shower, barbeque and eat alfresco at the gazebo covered dining table or cosy up together with a glass of wine beneath the stars. 

Alternatively spend the day at the Beach of Purity, a mere 200 metres away, or by exploring the old town centre’s numerous Baroque churches and aristocratic palazzi before strolling down to the sea-front promenade and sampling one of the city’s many cafes, bars and restaurants. Whatever you do, at the day’s end make sure not miss the opportunity for that nightcap on the terrace!

Old Gallipoli's a Wonderful Place

This home offers an authentic taste of life in Southern Italy. You'll find Gagliano del Capo's amenities and Saturday market within 200 metres. There are two outdoor terraces and a separate kitchenette here, ideal for preparing alfresco bites. While the second bedroom has a doorless archway up on the mezzanine level, this stylish fusion of old and new wins us over. The Ciolo path leads you to a rocky inlet with a tiny beach, though some may prefer the sands a fifteen-minute drive away.

This Art Nouveau-style villa dates back to the early 18th century and is a rare gem for those who love art and design. Outside, you’ll find an elegant portico with columns made of Lecce stone, as well as a courtyard with a private pool. Sample all of Apulia's best bits from this villa set just a few minutes' drive from Ostuni's historic centre and not far from the beaches of the Adriatic coast. A great option for a family holiday, the open-plan living area overlooks the private infinity pool – perfect for keeping an eye on children playing. If we were being picky, the kitchen area inside feels a touch small compared to the rest of the villa. However, the outdoor pizza oven and barbecue beneath a covered pergola for alfresco dining make up for that.

The house is in the centre of the city, with Roman amphitheatres, medieval castles, and grand cathedrals all jostling for space. On warmer days, it's less than a thirty-minute drive to the Mediterranean and many seaside tavernas.

While the authentic buildings won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, we love the cone-shaped roof and dry stone walls here. And when you’re ready to explore, the historic town of Ostuni, with its Medieval architecture and Adriatic views, is just a walk away.

Atop the Florence of the South

It's all about the location in this Santa Maria di Leuca home, a villa surrounded by olive trees and lush scrub. While we weren't enamoured with the interior, what with its tired-looking furniture and bare bedrooms, it's functional – and we don't think you're coming to be indoors all day, anyway. While there's no pool, the garden has a few nice spots to relax and dine, and you're just a short drive from the centre of town. Just beyond that is the gorgeous coast – perfect for a midday swim in the ocean.

It’s spread between a traditional trullo – built in local stone – and a separate building for two, which is ideal for a couple seeking a bit more privacy. There’s plenty of space outside for everyone to spend time together, with a private infinity pool, garden, and a gazebo that houses an outdoor kitchen. We love the rooftop terrace and its sweeping views of the surrounding olive groves.

Secluded away in the rugged beauty of the Puglian countryside, 15km south of the iconic trulli-covered town of Ostuni, this cone-shaped home is an absolute dream for anyone looking to experience a traditional southern Italian stay.

Stunning inside and out, this trullo is characterised by exposed stone walls, elegant archways and soaring ceilings. Some modern additions ensure its practicality as a gorgeous getaway perfect for multi-generational families or groups of friends, with spacious bedrooms and sleek en-suites ensuring plenty of privacy.

The outdoor space is a haven, with an inviting pool shrouded by olive trees and lush gardens, so you're free to top up your tan or seek solace in the shade of a nearby tree. In addition, there are a couple of fantastic outdoor dining areas and a wood-fired barbecue, where we'd be tempted to cook all our meals.

Set on a hectare of land and surrounded by fields, the trullo offers a tranquil space to unwind far removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. If you can rouse yourself from your relaxation, the quaint streets and piazzas of Ceglie Messapica are approximately fifteen minutes away. The best thing about this enchanting town? Its enviable array of restaurants that serve up mouthwatering Puglian specialities. 

Alternatively, drive 30km or so in the opposite direction, and you'll arrive on Puglia's awe-inspiring Adriatic coast. Its shimmering azure waters and white sand beaches are more than a match for the Maldives.
