Set less than one hundred metres from Ceglie Messapica's bustling pedestrianised hub and just an easy drive from the coast and Ostuni, the location of this apartment is spot-on. While the period home's vaulted ceilings and exposed stonework are impressive, there are a few compromises to make. Expect a small kitchenette that's better suited to lighter bites rather than large slap-up meals, and there's no outdoor space to speak of. But for a bolthole this characterful, we can forgive that.

However, there are no compromises to make in the bathroom with a large chronotherapy shower – perfect for cooling off after days exploring Puglia's nearby coast.

If you’re looking for Puglian countryside isolation, then this striking villa will certainly hit the mark. Just 7 kilometres from the nearest town, Ceglie Messapica, this traditional ‘trullo’ is native to the south of the country. In essence, it means a round building made of stone, with cone-shaped roofs. In reality, it makes for a truly unique stay. After entering this impressive, almost otherworldly exterior, you’ll be just as taken aback by the gorgeous decor. While the furnishings and colour palette of the living space are both neutral and understated, this makes way for the most important element of this home – stone. Rustic, natural, and elegant, the artisan masonry is fully exposed for your admiration. We love the cosy nooks painted in warming terracotta – one for dining and another for bathing in the master bedroom. As for the other room, you’ll need to traverse your private grounds. Pass by the saltwater pool, mini waterfall, olive trees, deck chairs, barbecue, and a plush dining area before arriving at another building. It has a fortress-like appearance, again in a rich terracotta, where you can find yet more peace and serenity as you sip negronis in bed.

Alternatively, drive 30km or so in the opposite direction, and you'll arrive on Puglia's awe-inspiring Adriatic coast. Its shimmering azure waters and white sand beaches are more than a match for the Maldives.

You’ll find the main home, trullo and annexe contain all the modern comforts you’d expect, and each is a refreshingly neutral space. Limestone walls keep the interior pleasantly cool during the day, ideal if you want a break from the heat outside. Alternatively, cool off in the pool before sitting down on the covered terrace for a lightly grilled lunch – it’s a beautiful poolside nook. Afterwards, while away an afternoon, gently swinging in a hammock as you get stuck into your holiday reading. If all that wasn't enough, the panoramic countryside views really push this place over the top, providing you with the authentic essence of Puglia.

This single-level villa places you in Puglia's interior, in a large patch of land dotted with olive trees – a perfect country retreat. Only 30 minutes from Brindisi and 10 from the charming San Vito Dei Normanni, you'll have the chance to explore Italy's heel here. At home, the living space is minimalist and functional – we felt it created a soothing atmosphere, although it lacks a little character. But step outside, and you'll see why we fell in love with the place – a gorgeous pool, alfresco dining and an outdoor kitchen mean you can spend plenty of time basking in the sun with a negroni, with nothing but the olive trees in view.

The Lady of San Giacomo

Sample all of Apulia's best bits from this villa set just a few minutes' drive from Ostuni's historic centre and not far from the beaches of the Adriatic coast. A great option for a family holiday, the open-plan living area overlooks the private infinity pool – perfect for keeping an eye on children playing. If we were being picky, the kitchen area inside feels a touch small compared to the rest of the villa. However, the outdoor pizza oven and barbecue beneath a covered pergola for alfresco dining make up for that.

An excellent choice for an authentic Puglian escape, this home ticks a lot of boxes. It’s spread between a traditional trullo – built in local stone – and a separate building for two, which is ideal for a couple seeking a bit more privacy. There’s plenty of space outside for everyone to spend time together, with a private infinity pool, garden, and a gazebo that houses an outdoor kitchen. We love the rooftop terrace and its sweeping views of the surrounding olive groves.
