Our favourite spot is the undercover outdoor space, with a delightful hot tub lined with candles. With a seating area making up the rest of the space, a morning coffee or relaxed dinner alfresco would be a lovely way to while away a few hours in this special place. 
 
Inside, it is just as charming – the traditional Italian floor tiling is a masterpiece in itself. Coupled with white-wash walls and stone ceilings, there are elements that will make you think of a grand cathedral. Cool and comfortable, the bedrooms are a lovely peaceful sanctuary from the daytime sun. We love how there is a gentle nod to contemporary style with backlighting on some stunning antique features.
 
On your doorstep, you will be greeted by many restaurants. Follow the smell of garlic and a large bowl of pasta, with a bottle of chilled wine, will await. The traditional features of your home-away-from-home are mirrored beautifully as you meander through the local cobbled streets, which are equally as charming as they are sophisticated. Spiaggia della Purita is also a lovely beach day out, for those after the sand, sea and surf.

Set less than one hundred metres from Ceglie Messapica's bustling pedestrianised hub and just an easy drive from the coast and Ostuni, the location of this apartment is spot-on. While the period home's vaulted ceilings and exposed stonework are impressive, there are a few compromises to make. Expect a small kitchenette that's better suited to lighter bites rather than large slap-up meals, and there's no outdoor space to speak of. But for a bolthole this characterful, we can forgive that.

Surrounded by countryside, this villa offers the best of both worlds, with its wonderful Ionian Sea views. You can spend your days relaxing by the private pool and unwinding on the variety of terraces (this home has stairs and steps, both inside and out). There are plenty of sea vistas to enjoy from this home’s living areas and bedrooms, too. The top-floor fourth bedroom with its balcony is accessed from a separate set of stairs, so it’s perfect for guests wanting a little more privacy. And when you want to explore the area, you’ll only be a few minutes’ drive from some of the most amazing beaches of Salento.

Let’s start at the top – by which we mean the roof terrace. You’ll be spending a lot of time up here admiring sweeping views of the city and ocean as you sip negronis. Lie back on the sun lounger while someone else fires up the barbecue – freshly grilled fish accompanied by local bread and olive oil will be a fabulous start to your Puglian adventure. When you eventually make it indoors, you’ll find high, vaulted ceilings and an understated colour palette, making the home feel calm and airy. On a rare chilly evening, light up the fire in the lounge and snuggle up with a glass of red.

Packed full of Puglian charm, you’ll find everything needed for a comfortable break here, but the cherry on top for us is the outdoor space. Sun-kissed terraces, a private pool, alfresco dining opportunities and sea views stretching for miles – what’s not to love? Locally, it’s a mere six kilometres to Santa Maria di Leuca and less than four kilometres from the beaches of Pescoluse Torre Vado – there’s something for everyone here.

Apulian Breeze

It's not a trip to Puglia without a stay in a trullo house, and this is a gorgeous one. Located in the rolling countryside, within easy reach of some of the area's historic towns, it's a great place to begin your Italian adventures. 

The traditional stone building has plenty of original touches – you'll love the conical roofs and decorative fireplace that provides a rustic charm. When you get hungry, you can head to the kitchen and cook up your favourite pasta dishes using fresh local ingredients. And, there's no better place to serve up your culinary creations than outside on the patio, as you breathe in the fresh air and admire the lush greenery surrounding you. 

When you fancy a day trip, there are plenty of places to visit in the surrounding area. The magnificent white city of Ostuni is around twenty minutes away by car, where you can stroll through the labyrinthine old quarter. The hilltop town of Martina Franca is around twenty-five minutes away, and if you fancy a day at the beach then you can drive to the coast in just over half an hour.

Located about 10km inland from Puglia's western coast, this home has plenty of outdoor space for fun in the sun. While the interior is a little sparse in places – you won't find sofa space for everyone here nor enough seats around the indoor dining table – it's the garden, terrace and saltwater pool that sold this home to us. The alfresco dining area is perfect for evening meals – although if you've got a full house, some guests will be dining at the covered seating area. There is also an annex with a bathroom and sofa bed - perfect for a couple looking for privacy. Nearby, you'll find supermarkets and eateries to keep you well-fed. 

Ode on a Rock

This wonderful villa is located in the highest part of San Gregorio in the countryside of Patù. It’s less than 2 kilometres from the Bay of San Gregorio, known for its beautiful sunsets and the beach of Marina di Felloniche. We love the garden and its centuries-old olive trees, and the views of the countryside and sea are glorious. There are two porches to enjoy, with an outdoor seating area and a barbecue for family feasts under the stars. The villa itself is a simple space with rustic style and modern comforts – it’s an excellent base for a relaxing Italian break.

Set in the heart of Ruffano, you’ll be treated to a peaceful garden and a private pool for refreshing dips. You can also walk to the nearest shops and amenities, while the beautiful beaches of the coast are within easy driving distance.

When you get home after a day of wandering along the town's cobblestone lanes, head home to enjoy an evening drinking wine in the private courtyard.

One glance at the panoramas and you'll see why this apartment caught our eye. Facing the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea, you'll have a birds-eye look across Gallipoli. Here, you'll wake up to the sun-kissed sea views each morning before enjoying an alfresco breakfast on the private terrace. After a stint at the local beach or a wander around Gallipoli's narrow streets, decompress back home with a glass of wine as the sun dips below the coastline. The decor may be a bit plain, and there isn't a proper living space, but we think that's a fair compromise.
