Coupled with white-wash walls and stone ceilings, there are elements that will make you think of a grand cathedral. We love how there is a gentle nod to contemporary style with backlighting on some stunning antique features.

The decor here is quite traditional and perhaps won't be to everyone's taste, but we think the location is great. The ancient Heroon Centopietre, an enigmatic tomb of the noble hero Gimignano, is a short walk away, while the Ionian Sea is easily reached by car, whether you head west to the Marina di San Gregorio beach or east to Il Ciolo.

When you fancy a day trip, there are plenty of places to visit in the surrounding area. The magnificent white city of Ostuni is around twenty minutes away by car, where you can stroll through the labyrinthine old quarter. The hilltop town of Martina Franca is around twenty-five minutes away, and if you fancy a day at the beach then you can drive to the coast in just over half an hour.

You’re in the heart of the blissfully quiet Puglian countryside here, but a twelve-minute drive takes you to the buzzing old town of Ceglie Messapica, where ancient church bells chime on a Sunday and cafés spill out into squares. The UNESCO town of Ostuni is just a twenty-minute drive too – perfect for a day trip.

Alternatively, Lecce's many seafood restaurants are only a short stroll along the cobbled streets. The house is in the centre of the city, with Roman amphitheatres, medieval castles, and grand cathedrals all jostling for space. On warmer days, it's less than a thirty-minute drive to the Mediterranean and many seaside tavernas.

On the very tip of Italy’s “heel” this apartment sits in the sunny harbour town of Leuca. Sample the seafood restaurants by the water or head out to find a rugged coastline punctuated with secret sandy bays. The apartment is on the top floor of a traditional-style villa with a huge sun trap of a terrace looking out over the harbour. Out here, you can dine, recline and wash sandy feet in the outdoor show after days at the beach. Inside, it’s a little old-fashioned in terms of decor and the kitchen won’t win any awards for modernity, but the sea views from each window are what makes this place stand out.

When you get home after a day of wandering along the town's cobblestone lanes, head home to enjoy an evening drinking wine in the private courtyard.

Set less than one hundred metres from Ceglie Messapica's bustling pedestrianised hub and just an easy drive from the coast and Ostuni, the location of this apartment is spot-on. While the period home's vaulted ceilings and exposed stonework are impressive, there are a few compromises to make. Expect a small kitchenette that's better suited to lighter bites rather than large slap-up meals, and there's no outdoor space to speak of. But for a bolthole this characterful, we can forgive that.
