The stone tower, which dates back to 1161, boasts a marble dining table – perfect for pasta for two – a Jacuzzi bathtub, and a wine cellar. What this home may lack in style, it makes up for in location. Nestled in the hills of Moneglia, it commands views across the bay and is well-connected by train to Genoa and the coastal villages of the Cinque Terre. Admire the views from a lounger on the terrace, or head down to the pool, which stays relatively shady and cool thanks to the surrounding trees. The furnishings are a little dated, but at least there are sea views in the upper bedrooms, while the large sliding glass doors mean you're never far away from a sunny seat. Plus, the glass dining table comfortably seats your entire group, so you can also enjoy meals together – that's if you don't wander into Moneglia to try one of the restaurants on the palm-tree-lined streets.

You can watch all the nautical action unfold from your bougainvillea-clad balcony. Or take a ten-minute amble along the coast to the village’s history-rich centre – it’s been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason. While the coastal-themed interiors are charming, they will feel dated for some. The bedroom layouts are a little quirky, too, with the main bedroom sleeping three and the final single bed tucked away in the hallway. But we can let that slide for a home with such a one-of-a-kind setting.

When you want to explore, you'll find Strozzi Palace close by, as well as Florence Santa Maria Novella station, connecting you to the rest of Tuscany and beyond.

Boasting stunning views of the town's historic rooftops and medieval towers, this two-level apartment is the ideal Lucca retreat. It’s light and airy with lots of character features, but we should probably mention that the bathroom is a bit dated. And although there’s a lift here there’s still a flight of stairs to climb. We’re sure you’ll love the location here. It’s situated between the vibrant Piazza San Michele and the Via Fillungo, so you’ll have plenty of boutiques and restaurants on your doorstep.

Decadent in every sense of the word, this villa in the Tuscan countryside is a dream come true, as far as we're concerned. Owned by a bespoke interior designer, it should come as no surprise that every room is a treasure trove, filled with plush furniture, eclectic knick-knacks, antique furniture and that unique designer touch that makes it sing. Historic character is around every corner – we're particularly fond of the wooden beams and brick ceilings – but all the mod-cons are accounted for, including a stunning chef's kitchen perfect for meal prepping and small, luxurious bathrooms complete with rainfall showers.

But there's no denying that the garden is the best part of all. Romantic and magical, we'd happily spend all our time out here, admiring the medieval architecture of the 10th-century church next door. While away lazy afternoons swimming in the private pool, sunbathing on the lounge chairs and reading in the gazebo. Come dinnertime, share an Italian feast and a bottle of Tuscan wine under the leafy pergola as the night falls, surrounded by twinkling fairy lights. When you're ready to venture out, Tuscany's main sights are all reachable by car – including Florence, Lucca and Pistoia – but we're just as happy to stay local and discover Montecarlo's traditional eateries, wineries and medieval fortress.

Your expansive terrace and the apartment to which it’s attached are situated on the top floor of a building dating back to the 1400s. The meeting of worlds old and new continues inside with tasteful furnishings and little dashes of luxury – think mirrored cabinets, cut crystalware and feather-trimmed cushions. When you aren’t taking holiday snaps from the terrace, we recommend a stroll around Lucca (or take the two bicycles provided for a ride). In addition to the conservatory, the home is right by Piazza del Suffragio and the must-see medieval church, Santa Giulia (all under a minute on foot), while several fantastic restaurants are on your doorstep. If you want to explore Guinigi Tower and Lucca Cathedral up close, both are a two-minute walk away.

Set on an estate dotted with trees, shrubs, and other native foliage, this home ecompasses the entire first floor of an ancient villa in Orentano. Despite sharing things like the pool, tennis court, and soccer field with another home, there is enough room on the property for it to still feel private. That’s probably helped along by the fact that you have your own private garden and barbecue – not to mention the sheer size of the home itself. Move easily between rooms and use the easy go-between as an excuse to nip into the kitchen for another cup of coffee and a dozen more biscotti to take back to where you’re reading on the plush sofa. Take the spiral staircase up to the loft where you’ll find the rustic bedrooms and bathrooms for when you’re ready to turn in at night. When you think loft, you might conjure up images of a tight squeeze, but the addition of the skylights in almost every room here allows the light to make the space feel more open. 

With the host and his family living on the estate, you’ll sometimes find yourself around the table enjoying their homemade pasta alfresco with soft music playing in the background. There’s also a brick pizza oven here, so don’t be surprised if you eat more margarita than you’d care to – we know, that is not even remotely possible. 

When you’re not enjoying the home, you can make a trip to Pisa, Voltera, or Florence – each with their unique charm – or borrow the bicycles and simply explore the surroundings on two wheels instead of four. After a day of activity under the Tuscan sun, take a late-night swim in the heated pool, and when you’re ready to return inside, why not linger a little while longer to gaze up at the stars.

This charming apartment is located in perfect tranquillity inside a converted ancient palace, where the environment has been impeccably refurbished whilst respecting the original structure. We love how much greenery surrounds this home, and how it can make you appreciate the simple things in life as you take a long walk through the flora, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the bird's chirp. The wooden beams definitely give this home the character it deserves, as do the shutters that can be opened to let in light as you gaze out over the trees of an ancient noble villa.
 
When you want to be a part of the city's hustle and bustle, take the sixteen-minute drive to Lucca and bike along the city walls, losing yourself in the history of what would've been, before indulging in some retail therapy in the Old Town. Admire Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, a magnificent square constructed on the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheatre that spreads a mix of historical beauty and true Italian flavour – stop for a bite to eat in the courtyard with innumerable cafes and restaurants.

If you're really up for an adventure, Pisa and Florence are less than an hour away.

Although the home is dedicated to alfresco living, you'll find the interior just as pleasing – there are five bedrooms to choose from, each one decorated in a soothing palette of neutrals. The home is divided into two individual apartments allowing for privacy whichever way you want to cut it. At dusk, when the winds whip up from the sea, step inside and snuggle by the fireplace and watch on as twinkling stars come out to play.

A beach lover's paradise, there are three to choose from in the nearby vicinity. We adored the convenience of stepping from the manicured lawn to the short six-minute walk to Bagni La Rotondo Beach. If you can drag yourself away from this nautical playground, then Genoa, the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, is a twelve-minute car ride away.
