Taking inspiration from Motor Valley, this dapper apartment is a stylish place to call home. With its automotive wallpaper, midnight blue kitchen and lavish rainfall shower, there's no denying that every inch is sleek, sophisticated and super contemporary – but the scenes from the balcony are anything but. A former palace, the view of the building's tangerine-coloured internal courtyard is old-world at its best – what a delightful contrast to the glossy finishes inside. Although there's nowhere to sit on the balcony, we still think it's an excellent spot to savour a glass of Pignoletto in the Italian sunshine. 

You also couldn't be better located, with Piazza Maggiore, the Two Towers and Fontana del Nettuno all less than a ten-minute walk away. Spend afternoons wandering Bologna's historic lanes in search of independent shops, tucked-away trattorias and local markets. Evenings, however, are best enjoyed wining and dining alfresco at the array of excellent restaurants nearby. Sounds like the perfect getaway to us.

Motor Valley XXVIII

It may be ensconced in the shambling, medieval Old Town of Bologna, but this flash studio apartment is the opposite of old-fashioned. First, there are the bright yellow racing stripes behind the big bed. Then, there’s the canary-yellow kitchen sitting against a coal-black canvas. A huddle of yukka plants adds a bit of greenery too.

Stepping outside the building, you’re immediately in a medieval world of ancient, porticoed streets where cafés and restaurants spill out onto the covered pavements. Stroll through this labyrinth of rose-coloured buildings to Piazza Maggiore, Bologna’s main square a seven-minute walk away. If you’re not sampling the local, freshly-made tortelloni in family-run restaurants or sipping neon-bright spritz at aperitivo, perhaps load up on the fresh, local market produce for a feast at home. 

Extreme Motor III

Set within an estate in the hills of Bologna, this villa is the perfect combination of privacy and convenience. The home itself has a private garden with a swimming pool, two Jacuzzis and alfresco dining terrace, while just a short stroll away you’ll find an impressive range of communal facilities which include a spa, tennis courts, driving range and children’s playground. You’ll also find a restaurant just 450 metres away, but if you fancy exploring a little further afield the famous city of Bologna is just a 20-minute drive away, where you’ll find an array of local eateries and majestic architecture. 

The Peaceful Piazza

Although this home is situated on an estate, just a ten-minute walk from communal amenities, including restaurants, bars and a spa, guests staying here have their own garden and infinity swimming pool with a hot tub. Daily housekeeping means you won’t have to lift a finger and if you’d like a professional to take care of mealtimes, a private chef service can be arranged. Should you fancy a change of scenery, Bologna is reached in around twenty minutes by car, while Modena is reached in about an hour.

The Olive Leaf

With a funky black and yellow colour scheme and nods to the Emilia Romagna region’s world-famous supercars, this striking loft-style apartment ensures an unforgettable stay in the heart of Bologna. Take your foot off the pedal and unwind in the cool living space – sit back and relax on the soft leather couch before putting together an antipasto platter in the sleek kitchenette. 

When you’re ready to step it up a gear, head out into the charming streets that surround your building. Pore over the medieval and Renaissance structures, such as the Fountain of Neptune and the Basilica di San Petronia and City Hall in Piazza Maggiore, situated less than a ten-minute walk away. And when it’s time to refuel, seek out a traditional ristorante for a plate of famous tagliatelle alla Bolognese. 

Extreme Motor XVIII

Perfectly located in the heart of Bologna’s historic centre, this modern and comfortable studio apartment is an ideal base for a couple or a solo traveller wishing to experience all that this beautiful city has to offer. The Luminator

You'll find this studio apartment in the heart of Bologna. Although the outside of this former palace has old-world charm in spades, this flat's interior is all about those sleek, 21st-century touches. We're talking a luxe rainfall shower in the marbled bathroom, a compact, smartly-designed kitchen with a coffee capsule machine and quirky mechanic-inspired wallpaper behind the comfortable bed. It's a snug, somewhat dark space, we're not going to lie, but it's stylish – and if that's not enough to tempt you, the location sure will.

You're smack-dab in the centre of it all, just an eight-minute walk from Piazza Maggiore. The city is at your fingertips, so spend your days here museum hopping, sightseeing and wandering the cobblestone streets in search of hidden gems. Excellent eateries are on your doorstep, too –  whether you fancy pasta and gelato or aperitivo alfresco at the chic wine bars nearby, there's something to whet everyone's appetite.

Motor Valley XX

Just a seven-minute stroll from the city's main square, Piazza Maggiore, this home provides a modern base for couples and solo travellers. You'll find it in the medieval grid of Bologna's historic centre, nestled in a cluster of terracotta buildings and lofty porticoes. Here, you're at the heart of the action, surrounded by shops and eateries and within walking distance of the main sights. 

Though compact, this home's contemporary amenities promise comfort and sophistication. After a restful slumber, step outside onto the private balcony to sip espressos in the morning sun. We can't think of a better way to start the day than here, admiring picturesque views of Bologna's terracotta-tiled roofscape and its majestic Gothic church, the Basílica de San Pedro, an eight-minute stroll from your doorstep. Prepare breakfast at the kitchenette, complete with a nifty breakfast bar, or head out for pastries at a local bakery – we recommend the croissants at Pappare', a ten-minute stroll from your doorstep.

Two Towers XXXI

Lying within the verdant hillsides just outside of Bologna, this stone and plaster villa might look rustic on the outside but don't be deceived – this is a home for those that appreciate the finer things in life.

You only have to look at the large and colourful garden to see what we mean. Sitting in the middle is a swimming pool sure to be appreciated on hot summer afternoons, neighboured by loungers and not just one, but two hot tubs. Come dinner time, the alfresco table under the pergola is a wonderful spot for feasting while the sun goes down overhead.

The interior design lies on the contemporary side of things, with a soothingly bright colour palette, a chic taste in furnishings and a minimalist kitchen heavy on sleek surfaces. We have especially kind words for the bedroom suites, which have a refined elegance more typically seen in high-end hotels.

But wait, there's more. The villa sits within a large estate which has a wealth of communal amenities that guests can take advantage of, ranging from three restaurants and seven outdoor pools to opportunities for wine tasting in the cellar. The distinctive architecture and cultural institutions of Bologna are only 22km away, too.

What Fine Taste

Nestled on a hilltop, just a short drive from Bologna, this villa is part of a luxury resort – so you can enjoy peace and privacy along with the perks of resort life. Inside, it’s elegant and modern, with hints of heritage character, like timber beams and original stonework. Our favourite feature has to be the pool – big enough to swim leisurely laps, with a hot tub area for soothing aching muscles after a day spent sightseeing. When you’re not out and about exploring, you can sample the resort’s many amenities, including a spa, three restaurants, and no less than seven outdoor swimming pools. Afterwards, you can retreat to your very own villa – a sanctuary that’s just for you.

Italian Flavour

From this chic, industrial-style apartment, it’s just a seven-minute stroll to Piazza Maggiore; Bologna’s main historic square where palazzos have stood since the 13th century. Winding your way through the narrow medieval streets of the Old Town around you, you’ll find cafés and restaurants spilling out beneath ancient porticos and food markets selling fresh, local produce – you’re in Italy’s gastronomic capital after all.

Once you’ve filled up on tortelloni and mortadella, head back to your quiet city bolthole to enjoy an espresso at the sleek breakfast bar. Slate-grey and ink-black dominate the decor, with industrial touches like cage lamps and silver cogs on display. Though your apartment is a sleek world of modern monochrome, you just have to glance out the bedroom windows to remind yourself you’re ensconced in a rose-hued medieval old town.
