We recommend hiring a car so you can drive to nearby Ravenna and Forli, and admire the countryside on the way.

It may be less than a thirty-minute drive from the spectacular Renaissance city of Florence, but this home feels like another world. Pad across terracotta-tiled floors, with wood beam ceilings above, and discover rooms filled with character and charm, where period features and modern touches sit effortlessly alongside one another. Nowhere is this better displayed than in the contemporary kitchen and adjoining dining room with its antique stove. In the green hills of Mugello, this villa offers the peace and tranquillity of the countryside but is just a forty-minute drive from Florence. Head to Italy’s capital of culture to explore the endless collections of the Ufizzi and dine overlooking the Ponte Vecchio. 

The home itself is traditionally stone-built, with the wooden ceilings on show, an old hearth in the dining room and the farm’s well still on display. Sprawling grounds house a swimming pool with a view over the rolling hills beyond, and a rustic-style loggia for outdoor dining – perfect when you're serving something cooked with fresh vegetables straight from the home's veggie patch. The stone-built, wood-fired barbecue is ideal for summer evenings.

Elegant and unique, this home makes for an excellent base in Tuscany. It’s in the village of Impruneta on the outskirts of Florence, surrounded by countryside, olive groves and vineyards – it also borders the Chianti Classico region. The centre of Florence is only 13 kilometres away, making day trips a breeze. The decor is traditional, with antiques at every turn, so it may not suit everyone. But for a break to Italy that feels a little like stepping back in time, it’s a great choice.

Leave the gorgeous Renaissance city of Florence in your rearview mirror and head for the hills. Drive just thirty minutes or so up into the rolling Tuscan hills, and you'll come across this breathtaking villa with a soaring clock tower. Split into three units, two of which are on offer here, make your home from home in the sleepy village of Cellai where time stands still.

Step inside your apartments, and uncover an enchanting mixture of traditional Tuscan and contemporary touches that blend seamlessly together. Terracotta floors, exposed wood beam ceilings and stunning frescoes sit alongside modern additions, including a stylish farmhouse-style kitchen and monolithic fireplace. 

All eight bedrooms blend rustic charm with utmost comfort to create havens of relaxation where you can take a break from socialising and appreciate the peace and quiet of your surroundings. Throughout the spacious interiors, you'll find several seating areas where you can kick back and relax with a podcast. In addition, dining areas can comfortably accommodate the maximum number of each apartment for sociable meals with family and friends in true Italian style. Elsewhere, the bathrooms are fitted with exquisite tiles and gleaming Italian marble that adds a hint of luxury to proceedings.

Discover a lush landscape of immaculate terraced gardens, a vine-covered pergola, a tempting pool and breathtaking views over the surrounding countryside. When your hosts are in town (in the mostly vacant third unit), they've made a ritual of visiting Forno La Chiocciola, where they stock up on fresh schiaccata, a Florentine speciality, and we'd suggest you do the same. Spend your days laid out by the pool, interrupted your sunbathing sessions only for refreshing dips and trips to the kitchen to rip off a chunk of that delicious bread.

For the culture vultures, we'd suggest spending a day (at the very least) wandering the backstreets and alleyways of Florence. In our opinion, getting lost on a self-guided tour is the best way to get to know the artistic, architectural and cultural history of Tuscany.

Simple, rural and packed with character, it sits within a 700-acre estate surrounded by rolling hills and lush forest. And while the kitchen looks the part, with a farmhouse table and a canopy over the cooker, it's modern and practical. This former hunting lodge was once used by the wealthy and powerful Medici family. Steeped in history, it sits in the green hills of the Florentine Mugello, with its own large gardens surrounded by vineyards. There are remnants of the past everywhere, with ancient beamed ceilings, archways and tiled floors, but it's been carefully brought up to date with an eclectic mix of vintage and modern furnishings. And need we point out those fabulous chandeliers in some of the bedrooms? Take the sweeping steps down to the pool or pull up a lounger amid the scented flowers and lemon trees. Walking in the garden here, you’ll also find an area dedicated to aromatic herbs – the perfect addition to a Tuscan lunch in the dining area under a wisteria-covered pergola. It's just a short drive to the freshwater oasis of Lake Bilancino and a day trip to Florence is no more than forty minutes away by car.

This Tuscan Villa caught our eye for its lush garden, surrounded by trees – you’ll certainly feel like you’ve escaped to the country when you’re lounging by the pool here. Located in the Mugello Valley, you’re a short drive from Borgo San Lorenzo, where you’ll find shops and restaurants, and 36 kilometres from the ever-popular Florence. While the kitchen area is small and there isn’t a huge amount of space for preparing meals, there’s a barbecue outside and the covered loggia is perfect for alfresco dining.

The apartment features a vaulted roof and simple, fuss-free decor. It’s a comfortable and charming base for a holiday, and you’ll have access to the communal gardens and heated plunge pool – what more could you ask for?

Racing fans might know Mugello for its circuit, but away from the petrol and screeching tyres, the Mugello countryside is a truly serene Tuscan gem. Just a twenty-five-minute drive from this famous track, and an hour from Florence, this rustic villa is a charming escape to rural life. Set on sloped, landscaped gardens with leafy trees, trailing foliage, and bright Mediterranean flowers, its traditional airs give way to some playful features. Keep the kids entertained with football on the five-a-side pitch in the garden, or head inside via the basement for foosball and a vintage pinball machine (‘big kids’ also welcome). Some might prefer a swim in the private pool, or sipping a negroni on one of the multiple patios, the choice is yours. You’ll also have plenty of choice for indoor relaxation, with three living rooms – one for every floor – and a delightful terrace upstairs where you can sip your espresso every morning. Although you’re surrounded by the rolling Tuscan hills here, it’s just a half-hour drive to Florence for all the art and culture you can handle in a day. Once you’ve had your fix of the bustling medieval streets and crowds of the Ufizzi, the peace of this villa is a delight. There’s an inviting swimming pool to cool off, and vast terraces overlooking the forest-clad hills perfect for meals outside. While the original tiled floors add a touch of grandeur and history, the high-ceilinged rooms can feel echoey (but remain delightfully cool in summer). Floral wallpaper and furniture handed down for generations won’t be to everyone’s taste, but this, alongside the hearth in the kitchen, add to that traditional Tuscan charm.

The interior is perhaps not our most exciting, but the exterior is where this home really shines, with its massive 18,000 sqm garden. The alfresco dining areas and gazebos make for dream weddings and spectacular events. Not to mention the private bar (though you'll need to stock it yourself), plus the pool and hot tub offering hours of relaxation under the sun.

Aged to Perfection

Dining alfresco under the shade of an ancient oak tree, admiring the Tuscan hills around you, and cooking like nonna on the range in the kitchen; this is la dolce vita. Once the summer residence of the Italian physicist Enrico Fermi, this beautiful Tuscan villa retains its country manor grandeur. Wooden ceilings, tiled floors, ornately carved dressers and huge stone fireplaces combine to create that opulent feel. The kitchen is the heart of the home, with its solid wood breakfast table and gas, range-style cooker set into the old hearth. Each bedroom has its own character and style, all with windows looking out over the Chianti hills. Head outside and enjoy the view from the terrace, where stone tables and wooden deck chairs are shaded by centuries-old trees. There’s plenty to explore in the area with Florence a twenty-minute drive away, and right next door the owners offer tours and tastings at their working farm where they produce olive oil and wine.

Located on a hilltop in Florentine Chianti, this elegant, aristocratic home has glorious vistas over the surrounding hills, covered with vineyards and olive groves. It sits within a renowned wine estate producing excellent quality wines, which you can taste in the medieval cellar situated in the basement. The villa has a manicured lawn with a lovely swimming pool, a tennis court and a five-a-side football pitch to keep everyone entertained. Get some shade under the centuries-old pines and cedars of Lebanon, or pick some lemons and herbs for a G&T.

Inside, a grand staircase in pietra serena, a grey sandstone used extensively in Renaissance Florence, makes a stunning feature. Classical sculptures, opulent chandeliers and interesting artworks adorn the living spaces. After creating a Tuscan feast in the kitchen, entertain your guests at the piano. We adore the countryside views that stretch towards the centre of Florence and the towering dome of Brunelleschi from the two turrets, connected by a panoramic roof terrace.

This home is just a four-minute drive from Impruneta, a town renowned for its terracotta products and excellent red wine. Or head to historic Florence, where you'll find art masterpieces and beautiful renaissance architecture. For golf lovers, the Golf Club Ugolino is a fifteen-minute drive away. At this home, it's easy to create unforgettable holiday memories.
