The views at this Umbrian home are truly spectacular. The villa stands in vast private grounds just a ten-minute drive from the hilltop town of Montone, looking out over the hills and valleys of the Umbrian countryside. It’s a secluded retreat, but still within easy access to all that Umbria has to offer. The villa is rustic, with a simple and comfortable decor – expect cotto floors, beamed ceilings and exposed original stonework, plus a few antiques. The gardens have been designed to make the most of the wraparound views, so you’ll find many a terrace and quiet corner to enjoy. We love the fig tree by the pool – time your visit right and you can pick sun-warmed fruit straight from the tree for breakfast.

In and of itself, this stone and brick villa is rather dreamy. The timber roof trusses and tiled floor bring an easy rustic charm, and the furnishings are unshowy. Large glass doors can be opened on warm afternoons — plenty of those in Tuscany — to let a cooling breeze circulate through the interior. They also look out to a lovely view of the Pratomagno mountains. However, the home is part of a compound with some excellent communal amenities. Pass through the lemon grove, for instance, and you'll come across a large infinity pool with a covered pavilion at the side for alfresco lunches. Elsewhere, there's a well-stocked library and a theatre space where musical and artistic events often take place. Guests can embark upon a stroll in the surrounding private park, where you'll find olive trees, traditional stone walls and waterfalls on the Resco River. You might find there's very little need to leave the address, but the local town of Pian di Scò takes just over twenty minutes to reach on foot if you fancy a change of scenery.

Set within an estate in the Perguia, this villa is surrounded by green hills and oak forests, overlooking the Tiber valley. This home is the largest of four cottages, so there’s plenty of space for the whole family, as well as a shared swimming pool and lush gardens outside. Inside you’ll find roaring open fires, exposed beams and stonework which helps to fully immerse you in your surroundings. Location-wise, this is a great spot, being situated along the border between Tuscany and Umbria. We’d recommend renting a car and taking some day trips to see as much of the area as possible.

You’ll find this lavish Tuscan villa at the end of a tree-lined drive, where cypresses stand sentinel against the rolling landscape. A swimming pool set in the perfectly manicured lawn provides a cooling reprise from the Tuscan sun, and there are plenty of loungers to while away the days. Dining outdoors can be taken on the gravel patio, beneath huge parasols, or perhaps amidst the rusticana of the loggia with its built-in wood oven. The terrace, overlooking the fields below, is the perfect spot for a sundowner.

Terracotta and flagstone floors inside retain that old Tuscan feel, alongside frescoed walls and ceilings. Living areas with plush sofas are connected by brick archways and rooms illuminated by candelabra and Moroccan lamps. Marble statues, shelves teeming with books and rich oil paintings all add that luxurious feel. The main kitchen, in chrome and steel, looks like it belongs to a fine-dining restaurant and each of the three apartments on each of the villa’s floors has its own kitchenette. Bedrooms are fit for a fairytale with swathes of silk for headboards and exposed stone walls. 

When it comes to exploring the area, you can reach the medieval city of Arezzo in just twenty minutes by car or stick around to enjoy farm-to-table restaurants and local pizzerias in the walkable Castiglion Fibocchi.

Located just outside the atmospheric medieval town of Pian di Scò, this stunning villa offers an idyllic countryside retreat, perfect for spending quality time with family and friends under the Italian sun. Thanks to the secluded garden, private outdoor pool and covered porch, you'll be able to enjoy the alfresco lifestyle throughout your stay. 

Step inside, through any of several French doors lining the villa's facade, and you'll uncover a traditional Tuscan interior with rustic terracotta tiled floors, antique furniture and plenty of exposed wood. Elsewhere, each of the four individually decorated bedrooms boasts its own en-suite. 

There are several other properties and shared facilities on the farm, including a vast library with a wide selection of books and magazines, a theatre for hosting musical events, and a network of walkways crisscrossing the grounds that'll lead you on enchanting walks through mature forests, passing streams and waterfalls along the way. If that all sounds a bit sedate, your hosts will happily arrange white-knuckle mountain bike rides along trails in the nearby forests. 

Elsewhere, the area is dotted with charming small towns and hilltop hamlets that are a delight to explore. Further afield, but well within day-trip distance, the Renaissance cities of Florence and Arrezzo are well worth an afternoon's exploration.

This traditional Tuscan home is located in the stunning Chianti hills. Made up of two stone farmhouses rented as one, it’s a great choice for a family reunion or group getaway. You’ll be doubling up on living rooms, kitchens, and dining rooms so there’s plenty of space for everyone, and two of the bedrooms have three beds – perfect for families or children. While the rustic decor inside won’t appeal to everyone, we think the outdoor space, with its panoramic views, private pool, and alfresco dining terrace, will be a crowd-pleaser. Location-wise, you’ll find a shop and a restaurant 1 kilometre away, and for day trips, the Medieval town of Arezzo is a 25-kilometre drive.

With a fantastic hilltop location close to the small medieval hamlet of Monteleone, this striking, quirky home deftly blends old with new, tradition and modernity, offering a host of handy amenities within classically elegant surroundings. Feel transported in both space and time as you meander through the pretty spaces of the interior, finding a favourite corner in which to park yourself for the afternoon with that new novel you've been carrying around, an aromatic cup of coffee, or something a little stronger (there's even a sun-filled reading room, so no excuse not to make some headway with that book of yours).

Outside, apart from the fabulous views, you will find carefully maintained romantic gardens simply made for strolling around and slowing down to appreciate the little joys in life. Take a big breath in as you take in the vista, smelling the heady aromas of the garden's many plants. Then, why not dip into the waters of the pool for a quick afternoon dip before heading off to refresh for dinner?
