Our favourite spot, however, is the private terrace overlooking the Arno, the San Niccolò district and the Oltrarno hills. Start your mornings here over coffee while listening to the river’s whispers or end evenings with a spritz at sundown before discovering the local dining scene.

When we came across this quaint apartment, we did a double-take. While it may be a bit old-school in style, it has lots of charm and comfort for a city stay. Set on the third floor, with a private balcony overlooking the rooftops of Florence and a courtyard that oozes Italian appeal, there's no lack of character here. Located in the historic district, you'll have lots of sights to see within walking distance, too. All in all, for a cosy stay with friends or family, this one ticks a lot of boxes.

It’s a stone’s throw from the Arno and a short stroll from the Uffizi Gallery, with major attractions like Piazza della Signoria ten minutes away on foot. The apartment is full of historic charm – we love the frescoed ceilings – and has plenty of space for all twelve guests to spend time together.

Set in a historic building, we love this apartment’s view of the River Arno and Florentine architecture from the elegant living room. If you want to do some Italian cooking while you are here, the kitchen, though quite compact, has everything you probably need. Or, there are plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby to enjoy. This address, in the heart of Florence, means many of the city’s attractions are a short walk. The Museo Bardini is 20 metres away, while the Ponte Vecchio and the Fortezza di Belvedere are both around 600 metres from this home.

Found a short walk from the iconic Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and closer still to the market of Sant'Ambrogio, this apartment is ideal for getting around Florence. But it doesn't just tick the box on a central location, it also has all the modern charm to make a family stay comfortable. Though little ones might need supervision on the stairs up to the loft the rest of the home is all on the same level. Upstairs is where you'll find the laptop-friendly workspace and a breakout zone teens might enjoy. It could do with a little more natural light to highlight the exposed beams, but it's still cosy and well-kept.

Delivering knockout vistas of Florence's rooftops and the mighty Duomo from nearly every room, we've fallen hard for this central bolthole. Each light-filled bedroom is as elegant as the next, though they are short on floor and storage space, so we recommend packing lightly. It's also worth noting at full occupancy, it could be a squeeze to all kick back on the sofa, and while the kitchen is well-equipped, it's short on prepping space. It's the perfect excuse to eat out instead, and luckily, you're an olive stone's throw from countless traditional trattorias for all the Tuscan classics.

We were sold on this Florentine apartment's private terrace alone – and that was before we'd even clapped eyes on the lofted living space. While both double bedrooms are charming, the last guest will have to make do with a sofa bed in the lounge, which is overlooked by the loft bedroom balcony above. So, while it's an impressive feature, it's not the most private space. Set in the characterful Santa Croce district, you're set back from the tourist traps immediately around the Duomo yet within easy walking distance of the must-see sights. Get off to a flying start at Piazza Santa Croce – it's just around the corner.

Not many people have the privilege of saying that their local church dates back to the late thirteenth century and is one of the largest such buildings in the world, but you can include yourself in this number if you stay in this apartment five minutes' walk from the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.

Aside from the illustrious neighbour, there's plenty to like about this home on the first floor of a historic building. The high ceilings, tall windows and burnt yellow walls lean into the city's architectural heritage, while the minimalist kitchen and sleek bathrooms belong well and truly in the 21st century. As well as this pleasant interior which is generous when it comes to space, the address also benefits from two terraces, one of which overlooks a peaceful garden.

There are plenty of other notable attractions in the local area, including Bargello National Museum and Accademia Gallery, which can both be reached in ten minutes on foot. You're well served by restaurants and bars in the surrounding streets, as well.

If the original frescoes adorning this apartment don’t impress, then its location surely will. Set in the historic Santa Croce district, there’s a piazza right around the corner bustling with traditional restaurants and all the sightseeing hotspots are easily reached on foot. Housed in a grand palazzo, the apartment is surprisingly practical despite its historic bones. There’s air conditioning throughout, two bathrooms to speed mornings along and a desk for working remotely. It’s worth mentioning that if four guests stay, the last two will share a sofa bed in the lounge. While this won’t suit everyone, it could work out great for a small family or friends sharing.

Speaking of history, this home – just a three-minute walk from the Basilica of Santa Croce – might be of interest to those with a little morbid curiosity. 

As you arrive at its imposing entrance, it has a gothic look with dark stone facade and a grand front door painted black. Any ideas what it used to be? For centuries, this building was the official residence of the city’s executioners, known as Casa del Boia. However, this modern apartment is now a far cry from its past, offering a fresh and modern vibe in the heart of this ancient city. 

We love the bright green velvet sofa, glossy black coffee table, and jungle-print wall hanging in the lounge. They might not be the traditional Italian features you’d expect, which is exactly what makes this home so unique. For a similar surprise, head into one of the bathrooms. With vibrant orange wallpaper featuring a flamingo print all over, these wonderfully unexpected and joyful interiors can certainly make up for its former residents.

Split over the second and third floor of the building, the open kitchen, living and dining room is on the lower level, facing the quiet of an internal courtyard. The upper level is dedicated to the huge main bedroom with a covered terrace overlooking the Corso dei Tintori.

In the heart of Florence, this apartment puts you within walking distance of the city's many famous landmarks. Among them are the Duomo (ten minutes on foot), Uffizi Gallery (a fifteen-minute walk) and Ponte Vecchio (also reachable in fifteen minutes) – not to mention a bevvy of shops and restaurants. Due to its ground-floor position, there's little natural light here. But we can overlook that since there's something better – a private courtyard garden. Outdoor space is rare in this postcode, making it the perfect spot for post-sightseeing aperitifs. As the living area has a sofa bed, we recommend this pad for short trips, especially if you're a group of six.

Look forward to 5-metre-high frescoed ceilings, historic paintings, and parquet flooring. Two living rooms and a separate dining room mean you’ll have all the space you need, though at full occupancy, four guests will share bedroom one, with two sleeping on the mezzanine level. The apartment is just five minutes from iconic Ponte Vecchio and a fifteen-minute walk from the Duomo.

While the look of Tulpa won’t be to everyone’s taste, you have to hand it to whoever the designer is for picking a theme and sticking with it. It’s also worth mentioning that the flat is in a fantastic position – the street runs from the Duomo to Santa Croce, so it’s one of the best places to stay for getting around the city on foot. All in all, it’s solid, and comfortable, and the right person will go mad for those prints.

Bedrooms are set apart across two levels, while over in the living area, a sofa-bed offers a more flexible sleeping set-up. There’s also a well-equipped kitchen to rustle up cosy meals in. Although with bustling wine bars and trattorias just moments from your door, we suspect you’ll be eating out. Don’t miss a nighttime stroll past the Duomo (just five minutes away). It's a magical place to be when the crowds disappear and the lights come on.

Looking for a Florence bolthole that's as unique as it is central? This Santa Croce district apartment, set in a fresco-adorned palazzo and within walking distance of all the must-see sights, is spot-on. With ceilings soaring nearly six metres high in the open-plan living and bedroom space, and a mezzanine level providing access to an additional single bedroom and bathroom, the layout is a tad quirky. But we think this only adds to the charm. It’s worth noting that the kitchen is on the small side and better suited to lighter meals and breakfast. But with so many traditional Florentine restaurants just around the corner in the Santa Croce Piazza, we suspect you’ll be eating out alot. 

The Frescoed Palace

Right above Florence's Teatro Verdi, this two-bedroom apartment is ideal for families and friends, with a sofa bed in the living room for an extra two guests. The gorgeous art of famous works like Michelangelo's David above the beds really make this home stand out, and while you can expect some outside noise here due to the location, we think it's more than worth it. You'll be just steps from attractions like the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, as well as plenty of shops and restaurants for stocking up on essentials and trying the local cuisine.

We were particularly fond of the Venetian plaster walls and the king-size bed dating back to the 1800s. 

Mornings begin with breakfast in the rustic kitchen before curling up on the armchair with a book pulled from the shelves and a cup of milky coffee. If the weather is fair, head out onto your private terrace and bask in the golden sunshine. 

When you’re keen to explore a little, take the ten-minute wander to the iconic Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, followed by a stroll along the River Arno. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, stop by one of the many eateries that surround your home (the gelateria on Via dei Neri is a must for afters.)

It's not all old-world charm, though. The bathrooms are modern, the kitchen is well-equipped to rustle up antipasti, and there's a shared gym in the building ideal for morning workouts.

We love the traditional features in this home but the bedroom doesn’t have a door so privacy here is limited. It’s also worth noting that it’s on the third floor, without a lift. If climbing sixty-five steps to the front door isn’t a deal-breaker, we think this place is a great find for a couple or solo traveller seeking a central spot.

 The Pillars of Florence

Space won't be an issue with a stay at this Santa Croce district apartment. Spread across two floors in a fresco-adorned former palazzo, expect two great-sized bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs. While downstairs, there's a light-filled living room and a dining kitchen to rustle up brunch with goodies picked up from the nearby Sant'Ambrogio Market. Accessed via an internal courtyard, guests rave about how quiet this apartment feels. But when it's time to soak in the bustle, the authentic restaurants of Santa Croce's piazza are 30 seconds from your door, and all the must-sees, including Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo, are a stroll away.
