Floor-to-ceiling black-framed windows and a sensitive renovation have turned this 16th-century Umbrian dovecote tower into one of the region's smartest stays. Behind the stone tower, the jagged cliffs and town of Orvieto loom, while in front, the rolling hills stretch before you. Interiors meld old with new. Flagstone floors and antique furniture sit alongside steel ceiling pipes and geometric prints. As one would expect in a tower, there are several spiralling staircases – as well as gawp-worthy views. Push open the sliding doors in the grey, country-style kitchen and step out onto the terrace. A built-in barbecue and wrought-iron table overlook the Italian countryside, while a large vegetable garden and fruit trees provide the freshest ingredients. Continue down to find 1.5 hectares of garden with Etruscan origin and the swimming pool, which was once an agricultural fountain. Forget about any form of work, now all you have to worry about is which spot to pick around the water, with the rush of the nearby brook providing background music.

The Italian town of Viterbo – sandwiched between Rome and Tuscany – has been renowned for its thermal baths since the Romans were around. With this centrally located apartment, you don't even need to step out your front door for some restorative me-time. The home's wellness area comes with a Finnish sauna and is set up for Chromotherapy. It’s a peaceful space that gives this home real wow-factor.  

Aside from the wellness room, there are plenty of other striking design choices that vie for your attention. We love the spiral staircase that leads to the mezzanine, as well as the bold lime-green and blue kitchen. The clever reinvention of the fireplace to hold an artfully arranged source of illumination adds warmth and is yet another talking point. The palazzo is in a small square typical of this part of Italy, with a church and fountain. The town of Viterbo is lovely to stroll around with a gelato, and there’s lots of history to take in. The Palazzo dei Papi is just fourteen minutes away, and is the former seat of the papacy. When you’ve had your fill of history, hop in the car and drive seven minutes to the hot springs. Soak away your troubles before returning to the apartment for another evening of blissful R&R.

However, days here can easily be spent without leaving the grounds.

The saline swimming pool is an inviting shade of turquoise, sitting against the Umbrian hills and surrounded by greenery. Beneath ancient olive and oak trees, you’ll find wooden tables for rustic lunches outdoors – perhaps cooked in the little stone building that’s been converted into a barbecue shed with a wood-fired oven. 

Beyond this villa's stone and wood-shuttered facade, you’ll find an ode to Umbrian tradition. An arched fireplace in the main living room harks back to days gone by while the worn terracotta bricks underfoot keep things cool. Wrought iron candelabra and wooden ceilings give a medieval feel to the huge sitting room in the annexe and there’s a small, book-lined living room for a quiet moment alone. Double wooden doors open up from the kitchen to the patio, so the shuttling of salads and sauces to the barbecue area is a breeze. In the bedrooms, dark wood and wrought-iron furniture keep the traditional feel going.

Sitting on the first floor of an old honey-hued building, it impressed us with its exquisite interiors and awe-inspiring views. 

The interior combines rustic charm with contemporary comforts and, in true Tuscan style, is cloaked in a calming veil of warm earthy tones and natural textures. Step inside and discover a light-filled canvas of exposed brick walls, terracotta-tiled floors and lofty ceilings adorned with striking timber beams. We love the open-plan living area, a free-flowing space primed for relaxation with ample seating, a delightfully-equipped country kitchen and a majestic stone fireplace. Down the hall, three sumptuous sleeping quarters promise restful slumbers and, through timber-framed windows, postcard-worthy views of your glorious surroundings.
