This glorious villa is ready to welcome you on an idyllic Italian lakeside break. Based just a short drive from the blue waters of Bolsena Lake, this 20th-century Italian farmhouse has been respectfully renovated to keep the original features that give this home its unique character – with exposed beams of chestnut wood, dramatic round vaults and beautiful terracotta floors. We love the contemporary, minimalist style that they’ve blended in with the retro feel, making the home feel absolutely charming.

We absolutely love the dining area, where you can feast on Italian suppers of soup and risotto all together. There are two large living areas, giving you plenty of room to stretch out and relax – one featuring a lovely fireplace where you can cosy up in colder months. There’s even a ping pong table where you can challenge your loved ones to a table tennis game or two. Outside, you’ll find huge, lush expanses of green parkland, as well as a private pool where you can take a refreshing dip.

It’s all about peace and seclusion at this Umbrian villa. On all sides, you’ve got a patchwork of rolling fields and acres of olive groves. Should you wish to discover a bit of Umbria on a day trip, the beautiful city of Orvieto is a short drive away – a shamble of ancient, ochre buildings sitting on a hilltop. However, days here can easily be spent without leaving the grounds.

The saline swimming pool is an inviting shade of turquoise, sitting against the Umbrian hills and surrounded by greenery. Beneath ancient olive and oak trees, you’ll find wooden tables for rustic lunches outdoors – perhaps cooked in the little stone building that’s been converted into a barbecue shed with a wood-fired oven. 

Beyond this villa's stone and wood-shuttered facade, you’ll find an ode to Umbrian tradition. An arched fireplace in the main living room harks back to days gone by while the worn terracotta bricks underfoot keep things cool. Wrought iron candelabra and wooden ceilings give a medieval feel to the huge sitting room in the annexe and there’s a small, book-lined living room for a quiet moment alone. Double wooden doors open up from the kitchen to the patio, so the shuttling of salads and sauces to the barbecue area is a breeze. The Italian town of Viterbo – sandwiched between Rome and Tuscany – has been renowned for its thermal baths since the Romans were around. With this centrally located apartment, you don't even need to step out your front door for some restorative me-time. ​​Restored by an Italian architect with a gentle touch, this villa has been updated and split into more modern apartments, but without ever compromising on the original charm. By honouring the villa's history – and thereby retaining its character – the home feels traditionally Tuscan with its terracotta tiles and wooden beams. Walk barefoot across the floors to savour the coolness of those tiles on hot days, or light a fire in the wood-burning stove and stare up at the beams, imagining what life would’ve been like here. Stroll around the village of Panicale, right on your doorstep, or drive over to Perugia for a tour of the excavations under San Lorenzo cathedral, followed by a mosey around Porta Sole, the city’s creative quarter. When dusk falls, pick out a family-run restaurant for a selection of hearty local dishes.

Much of this is down to its long history. Built at the end of the 18th century as a mill, it was converted into a farmhouse before becoming the handsome getaway you see today. This heritage is writ large across the interior, with stone archways, wooden ceiling beams and terracotta tiles underfoot a treat for those that melt at the sight of rustic design – which includes us. The more contemporary features – including the freestanding bathtub and modern kitchen – have been tastefully added to retain this inimitable charm.

Outside, it's a slightly different story. The hot tub and swimming pool in the middle of the garden are comparatively recent additions to the address but are no less welcome for it. As well as that, there are a couple of spots for alfresco feasts to dine among the fragrant flowers and trees that fill the grounds.

Although the location is certainly secluded, you don't have to venture far to find things to see and do. The medieval hilltop town of Montepulciano is only 4.5km away and is famous for its Renaissance-era buildings and globally-coveted wine. A little further afield, the cities of Perugia and Siena are 63 and 67km away respectively, so well within range for a day trip.
