First impressions count, and they don't get much better than this. But what might not be immediately apparent on arrival is how the villa's old-world charm will slowly unveil itself to you throughout your stay here. From the fact that there's always a shaded spot by the pool to escape the heat, to the way the breeze picks up in the afternoon just as you're questioning whether you might have to retreat inside and how the sun settles on the seating area by the house each evening – these factors combine to create a stay that's sure to live long in the memory.

Inside, you'll find all the mod cons you'd expect sitting beneath elegant vaulted ceilings and surrounded by antique furniture. The spacious rooms provide plenty of space to socialise, as well as secluded spots to claim as your own when you want to lose yourself in the pages of a good book. The lush grounds don't disappoint either. Immaculately tended between guest visits, they're filled with centuries-old oaks, mature pine trees and luxuriant lawns. This villa sits in idyllic countryside, yet is less than an hour’s drive from the centre of Rome, so you can get the best of both worlds. You’ll find this place perched between two golf courses, and a short walk from the banks of serene Lake Monterosi and the town of the same name. Spend a day exploring your surroundings or head to the Colosseum and ancient ruins of central Rome, a fifty-minute drive away.

Behind the stone tower, the jagged cliffs and town of Orvieto loom, while in front, the rolling hills stretch before you. Interiors meld old with new. Flagstone floors and antique furniture sit alongside steel ceiling pipes and geometric prints. As one would expect in a tower, there are several spiralling staircases – as well as gawp-worthy views. Push open the sliding doors in the grey, country-style kitchen and step out onto the terrace. A built-in barbecue and wrought-iron table overlook the Italian countryside, while a large vegetable garden and fruit trees provide the freshest ingredients. Continue down to find 1.5 hectares of garden with Etruscan origin and the swimming pool, which was once an agricultural fountain. Location-wise, this home is a short drive from the thermal springs of Terme di Saturnia. The beaches of the Tyrrhenian coast, such as Giannella Beach, are also reachable in around half an hour by car.

Surrounding the villa sits groves of olive trees and lush green vineyards, with Mount Subasio creating a heavenly backdrop to the idyllic countryside views. These are best enjoyed with a cocktail in hand while relaxing by the infinity pool, or while dining at sunset on the covered terrace. Inside, antique and vintage pieces throughout add to the old farmhouse feel of the home, alongside wooden ceilings and terracotta tiled floors. A huge double-sided fireplace sits between the dining and living room for cosy evenings in. The view from the arched window in here is simply sublime – framed like a picture on the exposed stone wall. Up on a mezzanine level, you’ll find a secluded little reading nook to hide away in.

This rustic Italian retreat looks out over a peaceful Umbrian valley, yet it’s only a short walk into the historic centre of Amelia for the local cheese shop, bars, bakeries and grocery shops. Covered outdoor lounges beneath rose-dappled pergolas and a summer kitchen embrace the bucolic life, while the modern swimming pool keeps things in the 21st century.  Inside, it feels like the old world in the open kitchen, living and dining room with a working stone hearth for chilly evenings. Each bedroom has a set of French windows opening up to the first-floor or ground-floor terraces and one bedroom has its own entrance from the garden.

Traditional and cosy, this villa has all the hallmarks of an Umbrian getaway. The private pool is open in the summer and boasts panoramic views of the surrounding hills. As for location, you'll be based near the medieval village of Monte Castello di Vibio and within easy driving distance of Todi, Perugia, and Orvieto.

Tucked down a quiet cobbled street, you’re just steps from the Duomo, the piazza, and the town’s shops and trattorias – with rolling vineyards nearby for sampling the region’s famous Orvieto Classico. If you're looking to cook elaborate meals, we should mention that this home just has a kitchenette. Still, there's a bakery 200 metres and a restaurant and bar 50 metres away, as well as a grocery shop 500 metres from this home in Seggiano. Further afield, the pretty town of Montalcino is 23 kilometres away.
