This fairy tale tower is the perfect place for a unique, romantic getaway. Located in picturesque Porto Venere, you’ll have four floors to yourselves here, including a roof terrace with sea views. The stone tower, which dates back to 1161, boasts a marble dining table – perfect for pasta for two – a Jacuzzi bathtub, and a wine cellar. To make your stay even more special, your host provides breakfast and can help arrange a variety of treats, such as a private chef to cook for you at home. Overlooking the waters of Porto Venere Harbour and just a flip-flop from a small beach, this traditional home is the perfect maritime retreat. You can watch all the nautical action unfold from your bougainvillea-clad balcony. Or take a ten-minute amble along the coast to the village’s history-rich centre – it’s been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason. While the coastal-themed interiors are charming, they will feel dated for some. The bedroom layouts are a little quirky, too, with the main bedroom sleeping three and the final single bed tucked away in the hallway. But we can let that slide for a home with such a one-of-a-kind setting.

In the heart of Portovenere, this home's central location means you can drop your bags and stroll straight to the waterfront. Delicious Italian restaurants, historic landmarks, pebble beaches – whatever you fancy, exploring on foot is a breeze. It's certainly not the biggest apartment, but what it lacks in space it makes up for with the fantastic sea views from the balcony, stretching all the way to Palmaria Island – a must-visit while you're in town. Add in the ochre-hued, quintessentially Italian exterior and the other charming terraces, and you can see why it caught our eye.

Enjoy an idyllic Italian getaway at this gorgeous traditional villa, providing glorious views of the Gulf of Poets and the leafy Ligurian countryside. Inside, you'll find beautiful farmhouse interiors that have an almost fairytale feel, with original features that have been recently restored, along with exposed stone walls, wood beam ceilings and grand brick archways. If you find yourself a little too relaxed, you can always get the adrenaline pumping with nearby activities such as paragliding over the Cinque Terre, rock climbing at Via Ferrata, rafting and hiking. An open space in a sixteenth-century building, in the hilly outskirts of Florence that, at time at times, has been both a stables and a nightclub, Thermae is one of the most spectacular places we’ve seen in Italy. Its restoration has been a labour of love for the host, Giovanni, and the way that he’s incorporated technology into the original structure is simply impressive. There’s too much to describe here, but know that everything's been taken care of. And if we did have to choose one thing that stood out, it might have to be the pool, hidden away in the vaults, and only accessible through a trapdoor.

Whether you're after a peaceful holiday with friends or a spacious spot for a family gathering, this restored farmhouse is an excellent choice. It's situated on a private country estate in the charming village of Lamporecchio, Tuscany, and has well-tended secret gardens, as well as olive groves to explore. This breathtaking property is spread over two floors and benefits from a private patio and communal pool area – the latter of which is shared with four neighbouring properties. We love the master suite with its fireplace – a welcome feature during the cooler months. We suggest a car for ease –  there are restaurants less than 2km away and the pretty town of Montecatini is 15km from the home.

Deep within the green Ligurian hills behind the famous Cinque Terre (a 35-kilometre drive away), this villa offers an escape from it all. After exploring the surrounding scenery by bike or on foot, you can kick back by the poolside, play games on vast lawns or gather for alfresco feasts on the covered barbecue terrace. This place consists of two separate villas, each with its own open kitchen, living and dining room for social evenings together. The traditional feel of some of the furnishings and bathrooms won’t be for everyone, but the vast, manicured space outside makes up for it.

With its sauna, steam room and private pool, this villa on the Ligurian Coast has relaxation at its forefront. The covered terrace encourages time spent together with a round of refreshments, and inside, three living areas and two kitchens provide plenty of space for the whole group to comfortably spread out. If exploring is on the itinerary, take advantage of the bicycles provided by your host or stretch your legs with a wander down to Milano Beach. We recommend hiring a car for trips further afield – the town of Massa is a twenty-minute drive away.

Set on an estate dotted with trees, shrubs, and other native foliage, this home ecompasses the entire first floor of an ancient villa in Orentano. Despite sharing things like the pool, tennis court, and soccer field with another home, there is enough room on the property for it to still feel private. That’s probably helped along by the fact that you have your own private garden and barbecue – not to mention the sheer size of the home itself. Move easily between rooms and use the easy go-between as an excuse to nip into the kitchen for another cup of coffee and a dozen more biscotti to take back to where you’re reading on the plush sofa. Take the spiral staircase up to the loft where you’ll find the rustic bedrooms and bathrooms for when you’re ready to turn in at night. When you think loft, you might conjure up images of a tight squeeze, but the addition of the skylights in almost every room here allows the light to make the space feel more open. 

With the host and his family living on the estate, you’ll sometimes find yourself around the table enjoying their homemade pasta alfresco with soft music playing in the background. There’s also a brick pizza oven here, so don’t be surprised if you eat more margarita than you’d care to – we know, that is not even remotely possible. 

When you’re not enjoying the home, you can make a trip to Pisa, Voltera, or Florence – each with their unique charm – or borrow the bicycles and simply explore the surroundings on two wheels instead of four. After a day of activity under the Tuscan sun, take a late-night swim in the heated pool, and when you’re ready to return inside, why not linger a little while longer to gaze up at the stars.

Set on a farm in Tuscany, this house blends rustic charms with a wealth of unforgettable experiences. Designed in classic Tuscan style, the stone walls house wooden beamed ceilings and terracotta floors. You’ll have your own kitchen, as well as a private patio with an outdoor table and a barbecue, so you can enjoy languid alfresco lunches. 

The house is one of six rooms and casitas, and guests have access to a vast, crystalline pool that overlooks the rolling hills and vineyards. The farm produces its own Tuscan olive oil and honey, and there is even a top rated restaurant where you can sample some of the farm’s produce. Days can be spent riding the horses from the stable, exploring the area by E-bike, or taking a cookery class at the restaurant, where you might learn how to make fresh pasta or cantuccini. On more relaxed afternoons, treat yourself to a spa or beauty treatment – there is nothing more serene than a massage in the garden, with a gentle breeze and a soundtrack of cicadas.

You will easily fall into the laidback Italian way of life here, and will come away feeling inspired and rejuvenated.

Nestled amongst the Tuscan hills, this generous villa is split across two buildings and is well-equipped for large groups or families. The rustic interiors won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but the private swimming pool and manicured garden guarantee a relaxing stay. If you find yourself in the mood for socialising, the large outdoor dining area is the perfect place for an alfresco dinner. The location is fairly remote and well suited to those who are keen to explore the countryside and vineyards, but if you are looking for a day trip, Lucca isn’t too far away.

This home caught our eye for its sea views across the Gulf of Tigullio. And even when you’re indoors, you can still enjoy the water vistas from the living area and some of the bedrooms. We love the outdoor space here, which is well set up for lazy days by the pool and alfresco dining. Hikers will be pleased to hear that there are coastal walks aplenty nearby, and for days at the beach, you’ll find a choice of seaside towns within driving distance. We think this home provides the perfect backdrop for a peaceful getaway with family or friends.

This sweet stone farmhouse just a 10-minute drive from Lucca is a glorious spot for two couples or a small family to live the Tuscan dream. Through the antique gate in a low stone wall, this hillside home has a private swimming pool surrounded by lovely mature gardens. Rich, green trees shield the expansive garden from view and there’s plenty of space for outdoor lounging. Cook alfresco at the brick summer kitchen and dine by lantern light as crickets sing in the greenery around you. Inside, sandwiched between ancient wooden beams and terracotta floors, are farmhouse-chic interiors in soothing pastel tones. But a quirky suspended staircase and macrame chandelier in the lounge add a little surprise. Bedrooms in pastel pink and dove grey feel fairytale fine beneath the old wooden ceiling of the home. Just a short walk away you’ll find a little market store and a local bar, and a bit further into the village is a pizzeria and bar to enjoy.

In the hills overlooking the charming Tuscan village of Montaione, this two-bedroom villa is ready to welcome guests to an authentically Italian summer escape. With its modern interiors and comforting decor, guests will be charmed by the living and sleeping arrangements here – but the real highlight lies in the exterior. A large pool with sun loungers and umbrellas, multiple outdoor sofas and an idyllic alfresco dining table combine to make outdoor living a delightful experience here. When you’re ready to explore, Montaione is minutes away – from here you can plan excursions to San Gimignano, Volterra and San Vivaldo.

Tranquil doesn’t even begin to describe this wonderful apartment. It’s tucked away in the hills above Bagni di Lucca, in a tiny village that’s quiet even in the height of summer. You’ll share the grounds and outdoor pool with four villas, but there’s plenty of space. Stunning views can be admired from almost every angle here, with far-reaching vistas of the surrounding hills and forests. The apartment is rustic in style, with exposed stone walls and terracotta floor tiles. It’s the perfect retreat for a romantic getaway.

Set in the hills of Pisa, this villa offers a relaxing retreat from the fast pace of modern life. With a main villa and multiple apartments with separate kitchens and living areas, there are plenty of private spaces if you’re visiting as a large group. For socialising altogether, you’ll find multiple spots around the gardens, with shaded terraces, alfresco dining spaces, a children’s playground, an outdoor exercise area and a private pool. This 18th-century farmhouse is on the traditional side, so expect some older features, though we think that’s part of the charm of this home. Conveniently located between Valdera, Volterra, San Gimignano, and Pisa, you’ll be able to make the most of the Tuscan countryside and vineyards here.

Reside at this sumptuous family villa perched on the edge of the breathtaking Ligurian coast. 

Fire up the barbie and enjoy alfresco dinners on the patio or strike a pose on the lounger as the kids splash about in the salt-water swimming pool. We loved throwing open the French doors and drinking in the views of the glittering coastline.

Although the home is dedicated to alfresco living, you'll find the interior just as pleasing – there are five bedrooms to choose from, each one decorated in a soothing palette of neutrals. The home is divided into two individual apartments allowing for privacy whichever way you want to cut it. At dusk, when the winds whip up from the sea, step inside and snuggle by the fireplace and watch on as twinkling stars come out to play.

Right in the lap of the rolling hills of Tuscany and Liguria, every waking moment at this home is set against surreal views. Tucked away and surrounded by lush greens, it is impossible not to embark on the idle biking trails to neighbouring villages before settling in for a long dip in the pool. The home is finished in well preserved natural stones and woods and the lofty volumes are fitted with modern comforts. Perched on a hilltop above Santa Margherita Ligure, this villa puts you on the route of the Cinque Terre – five towns that cluster rainbow-bright around coves and harbours. It’s a six-minute walk into the charming town centre for meals on the waterfront, just remember it’s a steep walk back up the hill. But the views are worth it – gaze out over the rooftops and shimmering sea from the sprawling terrace. It’s all about dining, reclining and unwinding in the pool or hot tub out here. Two kitchens (one indoors and one covered outdoors) will keep the chef of the group happy and sliding open the glass doors blends the terrace with the huge, open living room. 

The Hillside Garden

What this home may lack in style, it makes up for in location. Nestled in the hills of Moneglia, it commands views across the bay and is well-connected by train to Genoa and the coastal villages of the Cinque Terre. Admire the views from a lounger on the terrace, or head down to the pool, which stays relatively shady and cool thanks to the surrounding trees. The furnishings are a little dated, but at least there are sea views in the upper bedrooms, while the large sliding glass doors mean you're never far away from a sunny seat. Plus, the glass dining table comfortably seats your entire group, so you can also enjoy meals together – that's if you don't wander into Moneglia to try one of the restaurants on the palm-tree-lined streets.

The villa is a real beauty. It dates back to the 10th century, with the turret being added in the 16th century. From the main bedroom within the turret, you can enjoy magnificent views of the rolling hills of the Tuscan countryside. Hectares of olive groves surround the home, giving it a tranquil and secluded feel. You’ll find yourself relaxing as soon as you arrive, whether you plan on spending your time swimming in the private pool, sunbathing on the terrace, or dining beneath the pergola. The barbecue and wood-burning oven make alfresco dining a breeze, but you could always book a private chef or a local cooking class if you really want to wow your guests.
