This modern villa enjoys a prime position, five minutes’ drive from the beaches of the Ligurian coast (Bocca di Magra is the closest). The famous Cinque Terre route is an ideal day trip, where colourful fishing villages dot the cliffs. This villa would suit those that don’t like a lot of clutter as it is sparsely furnished with the essentials for a holiday in the sun. It consists of a main villa with a large living room, fully-equipped kitchen and dining for the group, plus a separate dependence with its own small kitchen and living room. The highlight is the private pool with loungers and dining on the terrace as the Ligurian hills rise in the background.

This fairy tale tower is the perfect place for a unique, romantic getaway. Located in picturesque Porto Venere, you’ll have four floors to yourselves here, including a roof terrace with sea views. The stone tower, which dates back to 1161, boasts a marble dining table – perfect for pasta for two – a Jacuzzi bathtub, and a wine cellar. To make your stay even more special, your host provides breakfast and can help arrange a variety of treats, such as a private chef to cook for you at home. The tower is a destination in itself, but if you can tear yourselves away, you’ll find a pretty harbour, Medieval buildings, and a viewpoint overlooking the Ligurian Sea nearby.

Overlooking the waters of Porto Venere Harbour and just a flip-flop from a small beach, this traditional home is the perfect maritime retreat. You can watch all the nautical action unfold from your bougainvillea-clad balcony. Or take a ten-minute amble along the coast to the village’s history-rich centre – it’s been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason. While the coastal-themed interiors are charming, they will feel dated for some. The bedroom layouts are a little quirky, too, with the main bedroom sleeping three and the final single bed tucked away in the hallway. But we can let that slide for a home with such a one-of-a-kind setting.

In the heart of Portovenere, this home's central location means you can drop your bags and stroll straight to the waterfront. Delicious Italian restaurants, historic landmarks, pebble beaches – whatever you fancy, exploring on foot is a breeze. It's certainly not the biggest apartment, but what it lacks in space it makes up for with the fantastic sea views from the balcony, stretching all the way to Palmaria Island – a must-visit while you're in town. Add in the ochre-hued, quintessentially Italian exterior and the other charming terraces, and you can see why it caught our eye.

Farmhouse charm still radiates from this stone-built villa near Montemarcello village. A handful of shops and restaurants are a five-minute walk away and just outside the villa, a (very steep) path leads down to Punta Corvo's Beach. The colourful fishing villages of the Cinque Terre and within day-tripping distance too. In season, the private pool offers a place to cool off and you’ll find several outdoor lounges and dining spots in the shade around the quiet garden. Put the full kitchen through its paces by hiring a private chef. It’s a fairly higglety-pigglety layout, owing to the age of the building, and you’ll find three bedrooms in the main villa and a fourth bedroom in a separate garden apartment.

With Lerici's beach a ten-minute walk away, restaurants and shops within strolling distance, and several charming nearby towns easily accessible by car, why not explore the Italian Riviera? Fantastic views and spots to enjoy the Italian warmth abound in this two-storey villa in Liguria. The open-plan living space catches the sun, though we'd prefer to spend our time outside here – with the alfresco dining area in a high-up spot, you get stunning views of the local area as you gulp down Italian cocktails, and the large pool speaks for itself. With the hilly terrain and winding roads, a car is essential here – the closest supermarkets and restaurants are a 7km drive. Further afield, you can head to picturesque Cinque Terre or even cross over into nearby Tuscany.

Enjoy an idyllic Italian getaway at this gorgeous traditional villa, providing glorious views of the Gulf of Poets and the leafy Ligurian countryside. Sitting up on an elevated position just outside La Spezia, and surrounded by olive groves, this home is the perfect peaceful retreat for when you want to explore the hills and valleys of rural Italy.

Inside, you'll find beautiful farmhouse interiors that have an almost fairytale feel, with original features that have been recently restored, along with exposed stone walls, wood beam ceilings and grand brick archways. The kitchen area is great for cooking up all your favourite meals during your stay, with a dining set where you can tuck in with family and friends.

You'll be utterly charmed by the outside areas, too – there's a private pool here that's surrounded by sun loungers, so you can spend the day alternating between soaking up the sunshine and cooling off in the water. The house is one of six rooms and casitas, and guests have access to a vast, crystalline pool that overlooks the rolling hills and vineyards. The farm produces its own Tuscan olive oil and honey, and there is even a top rated restaurant where you can sample some of the farm’s produce. Days can be spent riding the horses from the stable, exploring the area by E-bike, or taking a cookery class at the restaurant, where you might learn how to make fresh pasta or cantuccini. On more relaxed afternoons, treat yourself to a spa or beauty treatment – there is nothing more serene than a massage in the garden, with a gentle breeze and a soundtrack of cicadas.

You will easily fall into the laidback Italian way of life here, and will come away feeling inspired and rejuvenated.

Decadent in every sense of the word, this villa in the Tuscan countryside is a dream come true, as far as we're concerned. Owned by a bespoke interior designer, it should come as no surprise that every room is a treasure trove, filled with plush furniture, eclectic knick-knacks, antique furniture and that unique designer touch that makes it sing. Historic character is around every corner – we're particularly fond of the wooden beams and brick ceilings – but all the mod-cons are accounted for, including a stunning chef's kitchen perfect for meal prepping and small, luxurious bathrooms complete with rainfall showers.

But there's no denying that the garden is the best part of all. Romantic and magical, we'd happily spend all our time out here, admiring the medieval architecture of the 10th-century church next door. While away lazy afternoons swimming in the private pool, sunbathing on the lounge chairs and reading in the gazebo. Come dinnertime, share an Italian feast and a bottle of Tuscan wine under the leafy pergola as the night falls, surrounded by twinkling fairy lights. When you're ready to venture out, Tuscany's main sights are all reachable by car – including Florence, Lucca and Pistoia – but we're just as happy to stay local and discover Montecarlo's traditional eateries, wineries and medieval fortress.

The Magic Before

With views of the surrounding vineyards, you’ll love this hilltop farmhouse with its peaceful location. There’s a daybed for watching the Tuscan sunset and plenty of outdoor areas to relax and dine alfresco. Inside, the interiors are traditional, which fits the setting well, but it may not appeal to modernists. When you want to explore the area, head to Lucca, an eight-minute drive away. Here you’ll find attractions such as the cathedral, Piazza Anfiteatro, and Piazza San Michele, as well as many restaurants, cafes and boutiques.If you don't want to drive, there's a restaurant a short stroll away, too.

The furnishings are a little dated, but at least there are sea views in the upper bedrooms, while the large sliding glass doors mean you're never far away from a sunny seat. Plus, the glass dining table comfortably seats your entire group, so you can also enjoy meals together – that's if you don't wander into Moneglia to try one of the restaurants on the palm-tree-lined streets.

Cook alfresco at the brick summer kitchen and dine by lantern light as crickets sing in the greenery around you. Inside, sandwiched between ancient wooden beams and terracotta floors, are farmhouse-chic interiors in soothing pastel tones. But a quirky suspended staircase and macrame chandelier in the lounge add a little surprise. Bedrooms in pastel pink and dove grey feel fairytale fine beneath the old wooden ceiling of the home. Just a short walk away you’ll find a little market store and a local bar, and a bit further into the village is a pizzeria and bar to enjoy.

It’s a six-minute walk into the charming town centre for meals on the waterfront, just remember it’s a steep walk back up the hill. But the views are worth it – gaze out over the rooftops and shimmering sea from the sprawling terrace. It’s all about dining, reclining and unwinding in the pool or hot tub out here. Two kitchens (one indoors and one covered outdoors) will keep the chef of the group happy and sliding open the glass doors blends the terrace with the huge, open living room.

This stunning holiday home is perfectly positioned in Lido di Camaiore, just moments from the beach. It’s an attractive, modern home-from-home, beautifully decorated in peaceful neutral tones. We love how bright and welcoming this contemporary home is, despite the elegance. Outside, the garden is framed by hedges and palm trees, making it a pretty oasis. Best of all, there’s a Jacuzzi to relax in. There’s also an alfresco dining space – what could be better than dining under the stars before a dip in the Jacuzzi?

Tranquil doesn’t even begin to describe this wonderful apartment. It’s tucked away in the hills above Bagni di Lucca, in a tiny village that’s quiet even in the height of summer. You’ll share the grounds and outdoor pool with four villas, but there’s plenty of space. Stunning views can be admired from almost every angle here, with far-reaching vistas of the surrounding hills and forests. The apartment is rustic in style, with exposed stone walls and terracotta floor tiles. It’s the perfect retreat for a romantic getaway.

It’s twilight, the sky is painted deep blue with streaks of purple, and you’re looking out over rustic rooftops as a gentle breeze carries murmurs of arias from the nearby music conservatory – your Tuscan fantasy is just beginning. Take in the lovely vistas of the Guinigi Tower and Lucca Cathedral with a drink. Your expansive terrace and the apartment to which it’s attached are situated on the top floor of a building dating back to the 1400s. The meeting of worlds old and new continues inside with tasteful furnishings and little dashes of luxury – think mirrored cabinets, cut crystalware and feather-trimmed cushions. When you aren’t taking holiday snaps from the terrace, we recommend a stroll around Lucca (or take the two bicycles provided for a ride). In addition to the conservatory, the home is right by Piazza del Suffragio and the must-see medieval church, Santa Giulia (all under a minute on foot), while several fantastic restaurants are on your doorstep. If you want to explore Guinigi Tower and Lucca Cathedral up close, both are a two-minute walk away.

An open space in a sixteenth-century building, in the hilly outskirts of Florence that, at time at times, has been both a stables and a nightclub, Thermae is one of the most spectacular places we’ve seen in Italy. Its restoration has been a labour of love for the host, Giovanni, and the way that he’s incorporated technology into the original structure is simply impressive. There’s too much to describe here, but know that everything's been taken care of. And if we did have to choose one thing that stood out, it might have to be the pool, hidden away in the vaults, and only accessible through a trapdoor.

Tucked away in the Ligurian countryside that borders Tuscany, this home will scratch that itch for a rural Italian escape. This rustic villa has gorgeous gardens and a pool that looks out over the Apuan Alps and the surrounding forest, and is in a great spot for hiking and cycling. Though the decor won't be to everyone's taste, with a main house and a separate guest house, it’s an excellent choice for a couple of families looking to holiday together without crowding each other. There’s even a swing and slide, so little ones can tire themselves out while the grown-ups relax.

Boasting stunning views of the town's historic rooftops and medieval towers, this two-level apartment is the ideal Lucca retreat. It’s light and airy with lots of character features, but we should probably mention that the bathroom is a bit dated. And although there’s a lift here there’s still a flight of stairs to climb. We’re sure you’ll love the location here. It’s situated between the vibrant Piazza San Michele and the Via Fillungo, so you’ll have plenty of boutiques and restaurants on your doorstep.
