Reside at this sumptuous family villa perched on the edge of the breathtaking Ligurian coast. 

Fire up the barbie and enjoy alfresco dinners on the patio or strike a pose on the lounger as the kids splash about in the salt-water swimming pool. We loved throwing open the French doors and drinking in the views of the glittering coastline.

Although the home is dedicated to alfresco living, you'll find the interior just as pleasing – there are five bedrooms to choose from, each one decorated in a soothing palette of neutrals. The home is divided into two individual apartments allowing for privacy whichever way you want to cut it. At dusk, when the winds whip up from the sea, step inside and snuggle by the fireplace and watch on as twinkling stars come out to play.

A beach lover's paradise, there are three to choose from in the nearby vicinity. We adored the convenience of stepping from the manicured lawn to the short six-minute walk to Bagni La Rotondo Beach. If you can drag yourself away from this nautical playground, then Genoa, the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, is a twelve-minute car ride away.

If you find yourself a little too relaxed, you can always get the adrenaline pumping with nearby activities such as paragliding over the Cinque Terre, rock climbing at Via Ferrata, rafting and hiking. The home has been designed as a space to reconnect with nature, but fear not; there’s also wi-fi, a flat-screen TV and a wireless sound system to enjoy.

Found in the small town of Cisano sul Neva, this home is ideal for those months when the temperature starts to rise. The interior feels cooling thanks to the tiling underfoot and the large doorways that let a breeze circulate inside when opened. There's also plenty of shade to be found even when the sun's at its highest — a covered terrace will play host to many a languorous lunch, while the flourishing garden offers plenty of secluded spots for an afternoon nap. That being said, there are enough perks inside the four walls if you're coming during the autumn and winter. After exploring the surrounding scenery by bike or on foot, you can kick back by the poolside, play games on vast lawns or gather for alfresco feasts on the covered barbecue terrace. This place consists of two separate villas, each with its own open kitchen, living and dining room for social evenings together. The traditional feel of some of the furnishings and bathrooms won’t be for everyone, but the vast, manicured space outside makes up for it.

The open-plan living space catches the sun, though we'd prefer to spend our time outside here – with the alfresco dining area in a high-up spot, you get stunning views of the local area as you gulp down Italian cocktails, and the large pool speaks for itself. With the hilly terrain and winding roads, a car is essential here – the closest supermarkets and restaurants are a 7km drive. Further afield, you can head to picturesque Cinque Terre or even cross over into nearby Tuscany.

This villa is a dreamy destination for an idyllic holiday on the Italian Riviera. Day trips to Portofino (for designer shopping and yacht-spotting) and Genoa (for sightseeing in the Old City) are easy too.

A Seaside Getaway

What this home may lack in style, it makes up for in location. Nestled in the hills of Moneglia, it commands views across the bay and is well-connected by train to Genoa and the coastal villages of the Cinque Terre. Admire the views from a lounger on the terrace, or head down to the pool, which stays relatively shady and cool thanks to the surrounding trees. The furnishings are a little dated, but at least there are sea views in the upper bedrooms, while the large sliding glass doors mean you're never far away from a sunny seat. Plus, the glass dining table comfortably seats your entire group, so you can also enjoy meals together – that's if you don't wander into Moneglia to try one of the restaurants on the palm-tree-lined streets.

This home caught our eye for its sea views across the Gulf of Tigullio. And even when you’re indoors, you can still enjoy the water vistas from the living area and some of the bedrooms. We love the outdoor space here, which is well set up for lazy days by the pool and alfresco dining. Hikers will be pleased to hear that there are coastal walks aplenty nearby, and for days at the beach, you’ll find a choice of seaside towns within driving distance. We think this home provides the perfect backdrop for a peaceful getaway with family or friends.

You'll be utterly charmed by the outside areas, too – there's a private pool here that's surrounded by sun loungers, so you can spend the day alternating between soaking up the sunshine and cooling off in the water. There's also a covered terrace here, with a lounge area for resting with your morning coffee as you watch the sunrise, and a dining table for sipping on bellinis as you watch the sunset.

It will be hard to tear yourself away from the sea views at this hillside villa. Separated into the main villa and an annexe, this home used to be a traditional farmhouse and has been lovingly restored with modern amenities while retaining charming features like the exposed wooden beams, stone fireplace, and the original majolica tiles. The villa's gardens extend down the hillside, bordered by Mediterranean plants and herbs, ending in a swimming pool with views over the town. Relax in the shade of a tree with a book, before enjoying lunch on the outdoor terrace. Each of the bedrooms catches the Mediterranean light with their whitewashed walls, and one of the rooms even features an original fireplace. If you don't fancy trying the antique 'runfò Genovesi' (Genoese oven), the kitchen also features a gas cooker, oven, dishwasher, and fridge, and there's a barbecue for a good old-fashioned grill night. Don't leave without trying some of Recco's most famous delicacy, focaccia col formaggio – a delicious focaccia with local cheese. End your day on the balcony, a glass of Italian wine in hand, as the sun sets over the coast.

This large villa is the perfect place to relax and enjoy your holiday with your family. The property has a swimming pool, a ping-pong table, a table soccer, a children's play area, a wood-burning pizza oven and a gas barbecue. The house has been renovated with a focus on sustainability, using only natural materials and products. It is located in the town of Monteu Roero, in the province of Cuneo, just 2 kilometers from the village, less than 20 kilometers from the towns of Alba and Bra, and 50 kilometers from Turin.

San Grato

This home has a particularly impressive location. It's nestled within not one, but two UNESCO World Heritage sites – the Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont and the Sacred Mountains of Piedmont and Lombardy. And, with 17 hectares of land surrounding the house, and several rare white truffle trees, there's no denying this is a special spot. 

Much of the house dates back to the 19th century, with an even older Medieval section inside, and there's a sense of history in every corner. However, that's not to say that it's old-fashioned – the host has carefully selected a fresh colour scheme and provided plenty of modern conveniences to enjoy. Fire up the coffee machine and sip your morning espresso on the balcony, before grabbing your book and picking a sun lounger to catch some rays. When the temperature rises, simply slip into the swimming pool and float under the blue sky, or head for some shade under the portico. 

Walkers will be delighted with the range of hiking trails throughout this region, which guarantee incredible views of the luscious landscape. Wine lovers are also well catered for, with several nearby vineyards where you can try the local vintages. There are several charming villages within driving distance, and if you're visiting during the right time of year then you might have the chance to join one of the region's most unique traditions – a truffle hunt.

A location like this deserves a unique and truly magical home. Off the beaten track, a ten-minute drive from the coast at San Lorenzo al Mare and half an hour from Imperia, it's set in a picture-perfect rural hamlet on a hillside. Surrounded by rolling hills and ancient olive groves, this place hasn't changed for centuries. In a building that dates from the 18th century, it actually comprises two apartments – a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom, set across four floors. Steep, narrow stairs lead up to the cool, whitewashed attic rooms or down to the converted cellars – bursting with character and authentic charm. The two flats have their own living spaces, and one boasts a small balcony while the other has a dining spot on a rooftop terrace. With hundreds of years of history in its walls, we love the rustic look of its vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and bare stone walls. But that's not to say this place is all about the past. You just need to look in the modern, stainless steel kitchens and admire the mix of antiques and contemporary furniture to see this home has all the comforts of modern-day living. Head to the nearby natural pools of Laghetti di Pietrabruna for a wild swim, buy local farm produce or drive to the beach – the choice is yours.
