Hikers will be pleased to hear that there are coastal walks aplenty nearby, and for days at the beach, you’ll find a choice of seaside towns within driving distance. We think this home provides the perfect backdrop for a peaceful getaway with family or friends.

Perched on a hilltop above Santa Margherita Ligure, this villa puts you on the route of the Cinque Terre – five towns that cluster rainbow-bright around coves and harbours. It’s a six-minute walk into the charming town centre for meals on the waterfront, just remember it’s a steep walk back up the hill. But the views are worth it – gaze out over the rooftops and shimmering sea from the sprawling terrace. It’s all about dining, reclining and unwinding in the pool or hot tub out here. Two kitchens (one indoors and one covered outdoors) will keep the chef of the group happy and sliding open the glass doors blends the terrace with the huge, open living room.

Located in a charming resort, this is a comfortable 18th-century residence renovated in 2014. The property offers two apartments and is situated in a pedestrian area just 6km from the sea. The apartment is a modern and stylishly furnished 2-room apartment on two levels. The lower level features one room with a French bed and a shower/WC, while the upper level offers an open living/sleeping room with one bed, a dining table, satellite TV, international TV channels, and heating stove. The kitchen is fully equipped with a mini-oven, dishwasher, 4 induction hot plates, and electric coffee machine. Other amenities include WiFi internet access, washing machine, children's high chair, and baby cot. Guests can enjoy the scenic view from the balcony which has outdoor furniture for relaxation. Visitors can also purchase farm products locally.

Although the home is dedicated to alfresco living, you'll find the interior just as pleasing – there are five bedrooms to choose from, each one decorated in a soothing palette of neutrals. The home is divided into two individual apartments allowing for privacy whichever way you want to cut it. At dusk, when the winds whip up from the sea, step inside and snuggle by the fireplace and watch on as twinkling stars come out to play.

A beach lover's paradise, there are three to choose from in the nearby vicinity. We adored the convenience of stepping from the manicured lawn to the short six-minute walk to Bagni La Rotondo Beach. If you can drag yourself away from this nautical playground, then Genoa, the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, is a twelve-minute car ride away.

In a building that dates from the 18th century, it actually comprises two apartments – a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom, set across four floors. Steep, narrow stairs lead up to the cool, whitewashed attic rooms or down to the converted cellars – bursting with character and authentic charm. The two flats have their own living spaces, and one boasts a small balcony while the other has a dining spot on a rooftop terrace. With hundreds of years of history in its walls, we love the rustic look of its vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and bare stone walls. But that's not to say this place is all about the past. You just need to look in the modern, stainless steel kitchens and admire the mix of antiques and contemporary furniture to see this home has all the comforts of modern-day living. The bedroom boasts a cosy double bed and also has access to the balcony. The kitchen is fully equipped with an oven, gas stove, toaster, and kettle. There is also a shower/bidet/WC and parquet floors throughout the apartment. The balcony is an impressive 35 m2 and comes complete with terrace furniture and stunning sea views. Additionally, guests can enjoy amenities such as WiFi, heating (available from November to April), and a washing machine.

You'll find that there's an innate tranquillity to this home in the middle of the Piedmont countryside. How best to enjoy this peace and quiet? Well, the swimming pool will be the obvious choice during the warmer months, but there are plenty of equally pleasant spots out in the garden or under the pergola.

If the temperature ever takes a dip at any point, the table in the conservatory still gives you the opportunity to watch the world go by, while there's also an open-hearth fireplace to light up once the sun's gone down. This rather traditional source of warmth is in keeping with the home's rustic style, as seen with the exposed stonework and country-style kitchen.

Although you're more than welcome to never leave the address during your stay, the closest town, Vesime, takes five minutes to reach in the car and offers an outdoor swimming pool and a castle to explore. The city of Acqui Terme is half an hour's drive, too.

It will be hard to tear yourself away from the sea views at this hillside villa. Separated into the main villa and an annexe, this home used to be a traditional farmhouse and has been lovingly restored with modern amenities while retaining charming features like the exposed wooden beams, stone fireplace, and the original majolica tiles. The villa's gardens extend down the hillside, bordered by Mediterranean plants and herbs, ending in a swimming pool with views over the town. Relax in the shade of a tree with a book, before enjoying lunch on the outdoor terrace. Each of the bedrooms catches the Mediterranean light with their whitewashed walls, and one of the rooms even features an original fireplace. If you don't fancy trying the antique 'runfò Genovesi' (Genoese oven), the kitchen also features a gas cooker, oven, dishwasher, and fridge, and there's a barbecue for a good old-fashioned grill night. Don't leave without trying some of Recco's most famous delicacy, focaccia col formaggio – a delicious focaccia with local cheese. You can enjoy a quiet, rural location yet it’s just a fifteen-minute drive into the centre of Asti, known as the City of 100 towers in its medieval heart. Perhaps pick up a bottle of chilled, sparkling Asti and bring it back to enjoy on the terrace of your grand, Italian country home. There’s an outdoor dining table on the swimming pool terrace that overlooks the forest just begging for an evening tipple, or perhaps a barbecue dinner if you’ve been truffle hunting in the area. Inside, it’s the careful renovation of the home’s original features that really make this place stand out. Hand-painted frescoes on walls, corniced ceilings like the icing on a wedding cake and vintage mosaic tiles underfoot. Exposed brick in the kitchen gives a rustic feel, alongside the old hearth turned sink. In the exclusive Portofino peninsula, this villa is a ten-minute walk from the harbour's designer shops and seafood restaurants. You'll have private access to the sea on a small rocky platform, and the large terrace is shaded by century-old wisteria with space for alfresco dining. Some of the decor is a little dated and won't be to everyone's taste, but all the bedrooms have lovely sea views. Parking is limited, and although the sea is on your doorstep, it's worth noting that the nearest beach is best reached by public transport.

This beautifully renovated 5-room terraced house is located in the hamlet Bellissimi, just 4km from Dolcedo and 13km from Imperia. The residential area is traffic-free for a peaceful holiday experience. The property features air conditioning and parquet floors throughout, with stylish furnishings. The living room on the top floor boasts a dining table, satellite TV, hi-fi system, and DVD player. The open kitchen is equipped with an oven, dishwasher, freezer, electric coffee machine, and 4 gas rings. Guests can enjoy the beautiful view of the valley and countryside from the porch or patio with terrace furniture and deck chairs. The beautiful garden with lawn and trees is perfect for sunbathing. A shared swimming pool (seasonal availability: 1st May - 15th October) and outdoor shower are available for guests' use, with pool maintenance by the owner/gardener. Please note that a 200m steep footpath leads to the house and public parking is available 200m away.
