If this palatial 1700s palazzo, hidden away in the Franciacorta countryside, doesn't say rest and reset, we don't know what else will. Inside, the fresco-adorned rooms may be a little fussy for some – but who wouldn't be wowed by that private pool and century-old garden? With sprawling verandas and countless reception rooms, this home has hosted a fair few weddings and parties in its time. It's surprisingly family-friendly, too, with a play area and flexibility in the bedrooms for children sharing. Location-wise, you're just a stroll from sleepy Bornato. Or, for more bustle, Brescia, with its ancient piazzas, is a few kilometres away.

Sharing its outdoor pool with just one other apartment, this modern home sits in large gardens, in a quiet spot overlooking the rolling hills – the blue of Lake Garda just visible across the trees. With lovely lawns, old olive trees and plenty of green all around, it's a comfortable and practical home-from-home. 

Inside, it's a ground floor apartment well suited to family life. Modern in design, its big windows and spacious rooms keep it bright and sociable, with all eyes on the view to the rear. There's a well kitted-out kitchen and a dining table inside, but we think you'll be spending much of your time eating on the covered terrace. 

After breakfast, head to the gated outdoor pool for a morning of swimming and playing on the trampoline, or hop in your car and you'll be by the lakeshore in a little over five minutes. 

From your home, it's a short walk into the village of Soiano del Lago, with its grocery shop and small restaurants, making this the ideal choice for a quiet family holiday away from the hustle and bustle of the busy resorts. Drive to the nearby beaches for fun at the lake, or spend a day at one of the nearby amusement parks – Gardaland is around half an hour's drive away.

Start your day on the spacious terrace, drinking in the breath-taking views of the lake while sipping your morning coffee. Whip up breakfast in the elegant stone-tiled kitchen then plan how to spend your day. We could easily spend hours in the rooftop pool, lazily floating in the sunshine with a backdrop of exquisite scenery. 

After you’ve dried off in the sun, head into the historic centre of Padenghe and enjoy lunch in a trattoria. Wander the streets with a gelato, or call into cafes for coffee and watch the world go by – there’s no need to rush, you’re in Italy after all. The jewel in Padenghe’s crown is undoubtedly the castle; whether you’re a history buff or you’re just in it for the views of Garda, it’s well worth strolling five minutes up the hill to explore. Further afield, beautiful Sirmione is less than ten miles away. 

However you spend your stay, make sure you spend at least one evening on the terrace with a glass of something local, watching the sun set slowly over the lake. If you’re anything like us, you’d kick yourself for missing it.

Located just a short walk from the centre of Florence, this Santa Maria Novella ticks all the important boxes for us, making it a functional base for city exploring. The fully equipped kitchen and large dining table let you enjoy a hearty breakfast before you head into town, and we like that the home gets plenty of natural light – always a nice way to start the day. When you want to explore, you'll find Strozzi Palace close by, as well as Florence Santa Maria Novella station, connecting you to the rest of Tuscany and beyond.

Dating back to the 1900s, this apartment has many tales to tell, having been built by a local winemaker in the 30s. 

Combining history and culture, the building has been beautifully restored and retains many of its original features. Think fine marble staircases, wrought iron railings and intricately carved window frames – stepping into this home will transport you back in time. The interiors are super homely with pops of sunshine yellow, which perfectly mirrors the exterior.
Open up the French doors and take a seat on the comfy sofa to enjoy your morning coffee and gaze at the spectacular views of the lake. The private balcony looks out over the piazza, and is the perfect place to breathe in some fresh air and watch the world go by. You'll be ideally situated for exploring both the town and the beach, giving you the best of both worlds. 

Known for its ancient ruins and artifacts, head to one of the local museums to learn more about this fascinating part of Italy. Desenzano Castle is just 450 yards away, which has enjoyed a rich and varied past – climb up to the tower entrance for incredible views over Lake Garda.

As soon as you approach this lovely home's building, you're greeted with a beautiful pond with a fountain and colourful fish – we felt an air of calm straight away. The garden has an even bigger pond – the shared swimming pool is perfect for cooling off in the Italian heat or simply relax with a book on the lounger.

Inside the apartment, there are characterful exposed beams and terracotta tiled floors. Another stand-out feature of this home is the main bathroom which has Swarovski crystals set in the furniture and on the washbasin – we do love a bit of bling.

Situated a few steps from Spiaggia D'oro and the centre of Desenzano del Garda, it has a fabulous location. If you have kids with you, there's a playground 50 metres away too.

Housed in an elegant building in the Piazza Duomo in Desenzano del Garda, this home has a fabulous setting. The apartment is located just 50 metres from Lake Garda and the many shops, bars and restaurants. It's just 150 metres from one of the lake's sandy beaches too.

Back at this apartment, relax on the balcony off the main bedroom with a glass of wine. Inside, we love the feature ornate fireplace in the open plan living space, but the real highlight here is the beautiful view of the city's cathedral from the main bedroom window (this room also has vibrant botanical wallpaper).

Later, if you don't fancy eating out, rustle up some risotto con la tinca (rice with fish and chard) in the modern kitchen and enjoy the fruits of your labour at your dining table. After a busy day, get ready for bed in the marble-clad bathroom with its large shower and then get some rest.

This historic villa is in Gargano, a small town with a beautiful town centre, right on the shores of Lake Garda. There are restaurants and shops to explore nearby if you can tear yourselves away from the terrace, where you can admire breathtaking views of  Lake Garda. The vistas don’t end outside though – there’s a panoramic outlook from most of the rooms of this home. Special features include a cinema room, gym area and a pool table, and every bedroom has an en-suite. The location is fantastic too – situated on the Western coast of Lake Como, it has easy access to gems such as Varenna.

It’s worth noting the stairs do not have a handrail so this may not be the best option for families with young children, but you will find this is a great base for a lakeside adventure. Inside, the characterful home has been traditionally decorated with red and green accents (all we can see is the Italian flag!) letting the striking exposed stone ceiling do the talking. The lakefront town of Gargnano is within easy reach. Here, you'll find picturesque streets lined with colourful centuries-old buildings. Choose a down-to-earth Italian restaurant to sample the local cuisine, and enjoy a creamy gelato as you stroll along the water. That said, it’s all beautifully cared for and perfect for a small family sharing. Nestled in the quaint village of Perledo, you’ve got all of Lake Como’s best bits within easy reach, starting with Varenna, just a short drive away. Or hop on the nearby ferry to other hotspots including Lecco, Bergamo, and Milan.

The central location is equally appealing – making it easy to walk to the nearest beach (Molo di sotto), set sail on boat trips and savour delicious Italian meals in local restaurants. You’ll also have access to a dock for boat tours.

Nestled in Cecina village, where rolling green hills form an enviable backdrop, this villa lies only minutes from the famous Lake Garda. But it isn't all about location, even though we love how quickly you can walk to a restaurant from here. With most of the rooms spilling out onto large terraces, where you can appreciate the landscape from poolside or under vine-covered pergolas whilst having an alfresco breakfast, it feels like a celebration of the beautiful untamed surroundings. Throw in the typical architecture, rustic decor – though it might not be to everyone's taste – and ample space and we had to add it to our collection.
