This historic villa is in Gargano, a small town with a beautiful town centre, right on the shores of Lake Garda. There are restaurants and shops to explore nearby if you can tear yourselves away from the terrace, where you can admire breathtaking views of  Lake Garda. Nestled in Cecina village, where rolling green hills form an enviable backdrop, this villa lies only minutes from the famous Lake Garda. But it isn't all about location, even though we love how quickly you can walk to a restaurant from here. With most of the rooms spilling out onto large terraces, where you can appreciate the landscape from poolside or under vine-covered pergolas whilst having an alfresco breakfast, it feels like a celebration of the beautiful untamed surroundings. Throw in the typical architecture, rustic decor – though it might not be to everyone's taste – and ample space and we had to add it to our collection.

Located in a quiet spot on the western shores of Lake Garda, this villa offers a relaxing base from which to explore the historical, town of Salò. Sharing its outdoor pool with just one other apartment, this modern home sits in large gardens, in a quiet spot overlooking the rolling hills – the blue of Lake Garda just visible across the trees. With lovely lawns, old olive trees and plenty of green all around, it's a comfortable and practical home-from-home. 

Inside, it's a ground floor apartment well suited to family life. Modern in design, its big windows and spacious rooms keep it bright and sociable, with all eyes on the view to the rear. There's a well kitted-out kitchen and a dining table inside, but we think you'll be spending much of your time eating on the covered terrace. 

After breakfast, head to the gated outdoor pool for a morning of swimming and playing on the trampoline, or hop in your car and you'll be by the lakeshore in a little over five minutes. 

From your home, it's a short walk into the village of Soiano del Lago, with its grocery shop and small restaurants, making this the ideal choice for a quiet family holiday away from the hustle and bustle of the busy resorts. Drive to the nearby beaches for fun at the lake, or spend a day at one of the nearby amusement parks – Gardaland is around half an hour's drive away.

The lakefront town of Gargnano is within easy reach. Here, you'll find picturesque streets lined with colourful centuries-old buildings. Choose a down-to-earth Italian restaurant to sample the local cuisine, and enjoy a creamy gelato as you stroll along the water. Don't leave without picking up a bottle of the region's wine to sip in your garden as the sun dips into the inky lake.

As soon as you approach this lovely home's building, you're greeted with a beautiful pond with a fountain and colourful fish – we felt an air of calm straight away. The garden has an even bigger pond – the shared swimming pool is perfect for cooling off in the Italian heat or simply relax with a book on the lounger.

Inside the apartment, there are characterful exposed beams and terracotta tiled floors. Another stand-out feature of this home is the main bathroom which has Swarovski crystals set in the furniture and on the washbasin – we do love a bit of bling.

Situated a few steps from Spiaggia D'oro and the centre of Desenzano del Garda, it has a fabulous location. If you have kids with you, there's a playground 50 metres away too.

Tucked away on the first floor of an elegant building that dates back to the 1800s, this apartment is a very comfortable base in Verona. It’s in the historic district of Veronetta, a lively area full of artisan workshops. You’ll be within easy walking distance of all the sights – Juliet’s house is just six minutes away, and Verona Arena is twelve minutes away.

After you’ve dried off in the sun, head into the historic centre of Padenghe and enjoy lunch in a trattoria. Wander the streets with a gelato, or call into cafes for coffee and watch the world go by – there’s no need to rush, you’re in Italy after all. The jewel in Padenghe’s crown is undoubtedly the castle; whether you’re a history buff or you’re just in it for the views of Garda, it’s well worth strolling five minutes up the hill to explore. Further afield, beautiful Sirmione is less than ten miles away. 

However you spend your stay, make sure you spend at least one evening on the terrace with a glass of something local, watching the sun set slowly over the lake. If you’re anything like us, you’d kick yourself for missing it.

Housed in an elegant building in the Piazza Duomo in Desenzano del Garda, this home has a fabulous setting. The apartment is located just 50 metres from Lake Garda and the many shops, bars and restaurants. It's just 150 metres from one of the lake's sandy beaches too.

Back at this apartment, relax on the balcony off the main bedroom with a glass of wine. Inside, we love the feature ornate fireplace in the open plan living space, but the real highlight here is the beautiful view of the city's cathedral from the main bedroom window (this room also has vibrant botanical wallpaper).

Later, if you don't fancy eating out, rustle up some risotto con la tinca (rice with fish and chard) in the modern kitchen and enjoy the fruits of your labour at your dining table. After a busy day, get ready for bed in the marble-clad bathroom with its large shower and then get some rest.
