Between the two southern branches of Lake Como, this terracotta-roofed villa is set around an ivy-dappled courtyard. A huge, free-form swimming pool takes pride of place in the grounds and wandering across perfectly manicured lawns (or taking the golf buggy) sees you at tennis courts, a football pitch and secret seating areas. We absolutely love the loggia-style eating area, beneath wooden rafters with an old water pump and wood-burning fireplace. Or, choose to dine beneath the ivy on the veranda. Did we mention there’s a heliport?

Inside, you’ll find the classic Italian dark-wood furniture and rooms livened up with Moroccan rugs and maritime paraphernalia on the walls. There are several sofa-filled snugs to hide away in, and one huge lounge with pretty 17th-century-style windows for the whole group to socialise in. One spot we found particularly intriguing was the booth-like dining set around the old hearth with its cauldron still intact. 

In terms of location, you’re a half-hour drive from the beautiful town of Bellagio on Lake Como, and twenty minutes from Lecco where boats leave to cross the lake.

You can enjoy the incredible vistas from the terrace too, where you can relax on the sun loungers or dine alfresco. Whip up some tortelli di zucca in the sleek, dove grey kitchen for dinner. On chilly evenings gather around the fire or get some rest in the stylish bedrooms with their ornate wallpaper. 

Situated in Argegno, there are a range of eateries within a five-minute walk. Further afield, the alpine city of Lecco, with its splendid Basilica di San Nicolò, is eleven minutes in the car. Or walk the trails of the stunning Monte Barro Regional Park, a sixteen-minute drive from this lovely home.

This studio apartment puts Lake Como on your doorstep. You can wake up to the sound of the water, then pad out to the small patio to enjoy coffee with a view. In terms of size, it's not the largest home, but it is stylish. There's a small kitchenette – not the best for large meals but well-suited to snacks – as well as a comfortable bed and a couple of armchairs. You'll be based in the small town of Carate Urio, where cobblestone streets lead to scenic trails and local amenities. Como, Bellagio, and Menaggio are also within driving distance when you're keen to explore.

We think you'd be hard-pressed to find a snazzy, modern home like this with better views of the Swiss alps. From the garden they're truly panoramic and this place has been designed to make the most of them – with window walls, sliding doors and a wraparound terrace. Come summer or winter, this ground floor apartment is an idyllic jumping off point to explore the stunning region, either on one of the many nearby hiking trails or on the ski slopes. Enjoy a lunchtime barbecue, and tuck into a dinner of fondue or raclette. If your muscle are aching from all the hiking or skiing, take some time out and head to the sauna.

Come sun or snow, this charming timber retreat offers the perfect mountain getaway high in the Italian Alps. Located on the ground floor of a traditional alpine building in Livigno, the apartment is designed to be as flexible as possible, with a sleeping arrangement that's sure to suit.

Just a five-minute walk from the nearest ski lift, this studio apartment is more than handy for skiers and snowboarders. But as the sun beats down in the heat of July, it’s equally wonderful for picturesque bike rides (courtesy of your host). It's a scene best admired from the private balcony of this smart townhouse perched on the hillsides overlooking the Borromeo's islands. Inside, the newly refurbished, pared-back interiors are perfect for a fuss-free stay for two, and the pretty suntrap garden to soak up the Italian sunshine is a nice touch. You'll need a car here as it's pretty remote with no amenities to walk to – but don't let that put you off. Stresa's regal seafront promenade and cobbled streets bustling with trattorias are just a five-minute drive away.

Location-wise, you’ll see why this apartment caught our eye. Within walking distance of Lake Como, the sandy shores of Molo di Sotto beach, and a plethora of shops and Italian eateries, there’s plenty to occupy your time here. 

In the Heart of Varenna

Just a stone’s throw from Lake Como and within walking distance of the charming town of Lenno, this villa promises peace and quiet on Como’s western shore. You’ll have lake views to admire and plenty of outdoor space to soak them up – think a private pool, shaded terraces, balconies, and an outdoor lounge and dining area. Three of the bedrooms offer an extra single bed, which makes a great choice for families, though a group of close friends could make it work, too. And while the villa feels like its own retreat, we expect you’ll want to make the most of the lake, local trattorias and Spiaggia di Lenno, which are all within walking distance.
