As soon as you approach this lovely home's building, you're greeted with a beautiful pond with a fountain and colourful fish – we felt an air of calm straight away. The garden has an even bigger pond – the shared swimming pool is perfect for cooling off in the Italian heat or simply relax with a book on the lounger.

Inside the apartment, there are characterful exposed beams and terracotta tiled floors. Another stand-out feature of this home is the main bathroom which has Swarovski crystals set in the furniture and on the washbasin – we do love a bit of bling.

Situated a few steps from Spiaggia D'oro and the centre of Desenzano del Garda, it has a fabulous location. If you have kids with you, there's a playground 50 metres away too.

Inside, it's a ground floor apartment well suited to family life. Modern in design, its big windows and spacious rooms keep it bright and sociable, with all eyes on the view to the rear. There's a well kitted-out kitchen and a dining table inside, but we think you'll be spending much of your time eating on the covered terrace. 

After breakfast, head to the gated outdoor pool for a morning of swimming and playing on the trampoline, or hop in your car and you'll be by the lakeshore in a little over five minutes. 

From your home, it's a short walk into the village of Soiano del Lago, with its grocery shop and small restaurants, making this the ideal choice for a quiet family holiday away from the hustle and bustle of the busy resorts. Housed in an elegant building in the Piazza Duomo in Desenzano del Garda, this home has a fabulous setting. The apartment is located just 50 metres from Lake Garda and the many shops, bars and restaurants. It's just 150 metres from one of the lake's sandy beaches too.

Back at this apartment, relax on the balcony off the main bedroom with a glass of wine. Inside, we love the feature ornate fireplace in the open plan living space, but the real highlight here is the beautiful view of the city's cathedral from the main bedroom window (this room also has vibrant botanical wallpaper).

Later, if you don't fancy eating out, rustle up some risotto con la tinca (rice with fish and chard) in the modern kitchen and enjoy the fruits of your labour at your dining table. After a busy day, get ready for bed in the marble-clad bathroom with its large shower and then get some rest.

Plus, the city centre of Como is around a forty-minute drive away – visit the cathedral and wander along the promenade before you hop on the funicular railway for an excellent view.

You can enjoy the scenery both indoors and out, whether you're cooling off in the private pool, nursing a glass of wine on the terrace, or unwinding in the contemporary living area. Just note that one guest will sleep on a sofa bed. When you're ready to explore, Menaggio is 13 kilometres away.

We could easily spend hours in the rooftop pool, lazily floating in the sunshine with a backdrop of exquisite scenery. 

After you’ve dried off in the sun, head into the historic centre of Padenghe and enjoy lunch in a trattoria. Wander the streets with a gelato, or call into cafes for coffee and watch the world go by – there’s no need to rush, you’re in Italy after all. The jewel in Padenghe’s crown is undoubtedly the castle; whether you’re a history buff or you’re just in it for the views of Garda, it’s well worth strolling five minutes up the hill to explore. Further afield, beautiful Sirmione is less than ten miles away. 

However you spend your stay, make sure you spend at least one evening on the terrace with a glass of something local, watching the sun set slowly over the lake. If you’re anything like us, you’d kick yourself for missing it.

Looking for a family-friendly apartment with knockout views? This home, on the northern side of Lake Como, should do nicely. Granted, the bedroom's interiors may feel pared back for some, but the main living space opening onto that lengthy private balcony makes up for that. The shared small garden downstairs with a barbecue and Boccia is a nice touch, too. Although only four kilometres from the shops, bakeries, gelateria, restaurants and pebble beach of Domaso, this apartment is on a steep hillside. We recommend hiring a car to get the most out of your stay.

A huge, free-form swimming pool takes pride of place in the grounds and wandering across perfectly manicured lawns (or taking the golf buggy) sees you at tennis courts, a football pitch and secret seating areas. We absolutely love the loggia-style eating area, beneath wooden rafters with an old water pump and wood-burning fireplace. Or, choose to dine beneath the ivy on the veranda. Did we mention there’s a heliport?

Inside, you’ll find the classic Italian dark-wood furniture and rooms livened up with Moroccan rugs and maritime paraphernalia on the walls. There are several sofa-filled snugs to hide away in, and one huge lounge with pretty 17th-century-style windows for the whole group to socialise in. One spot we found particularly intriguing was the booth-like dining set around the old hearth with its cauldron still intact. 

In terms of location, you’re a half-hour drive from the beautiful town of Bellagio on Lake Como, and twenty minutes from Lecco where boats leave to cross the lake.
