It’s a secluded retreat, but still within easy access to all that Umbria has to offer. The villa is rustic, with a simple and comfortable decor – expect cotto floors, beamed ceilings and exposed original stonework, plus a few antiques. The gardens have been designed to make the most of the wraparound views, so you’ll find many a terrace and quiet corner to enjoy. We love the fig tree by the pool – time your visit right and you can pick sun-warmed fruit straight from the tree for breakfast.

You’re likely to spend much of your time laying back on the sunbeds or swimming in the pool, but in the evenings, the glass gazebo is the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of local wine. Inside, as well as the main kitchen and grand living space, you’ll find a separate kitchen, sitting room and two bedrooms on the lower floor, making this a great space for two families or groups of friends.The historic town of Foligno is just 5km away, with Perugia a 40-minute drive and Siena only a little further in the distance.

Inside, there are plenty of areas to relax and the elegant decor compliments the character features. Another total highlight is the beautiful vistas of the valley from the garden, terraces and the private heated swimming pool and Jacuzzi. You may feel like staying put in this magical home, but if you want to explore, then Perugia, with its medieval Priori Palace and Gothic cathedral is within driving distance.

Emerald Hideaway

Painted in a cheery bright yellow, we think this villa in the Ancona region will have you smiling before you’ve even unloaded the car. Lovingly restored, the house has been renovated in a traditional style that pays homage to its humble start as a farmhouse while showcasing the many great attributes it now holds. Spread over three floors, the home also has two separate apartments - one with a double bedroom and living space on the ground floor which can be accessed from both the main building and the dining terrace, and a small second apartment on the top floor with a sofa, two beds and a kitchenette. As vibrantly decorated inside as it is outside, there’s a rustic, cosy feel to this home that we just love with its antique furniture, bright washes of colour on the walls and exposed ceiling beams that create a warm atmosphere to feel right at home in. But it’s the outside where this sunny villa really shines - with several hundred square metres of land surrounding the villa, you’re treated to not only a beautiful, uninterrupted view of Le Marche countryside but also to a well-cared for, mature garden that features lavender, lilac, pink hydrangeas, oleander, roses, and fruit trees of all kinds. Needless to say, there’s plenty of space to spread out here as well as all sorts of peaceful spots to take a nap, read a book or enjoy an evening aperitivo. And the pool not only boasts some of the best views on the grounds but is large enough to host a whole family of novelty inflatables and is surrounded by a generous number of sun loungers so no one has to wait their turn to top of their tan.

Inside, the design is charming and cosy, bursting with traditional character. Some may consider it a little dated, but we think that's part of the appeal. Two guests will share a sofa bed on the mezzanine, though – since privacy is limited, we think it's best for kids. Location-wise, you're just a short drive from the small medieval town of Gualdo Cattaneo, while Todi, Perugia and Assisi are all excellent options for day trips.

Hidden in the lush greenery of the Colfiorito plateau, this elegant villa lies in a small village between the Italian regions of Umbria and Marche. A cosy wood-burner awaits in the living room for cooler evenings and bedrooms come with pretty countryside views out the window.

This 17th-century farmhouse is situated in the peaceful Marche countryside, just 70 kilometres from the sea and close to the villages of San Severino Marche and Torre del Parco. Offering plenty of space across the main house, plus a separate annexe that sleeps up to four guests, you'll have access to two kitchens and living areas here. Best of all, however, is the garden set-up featuring a swimming pool overlooking the landscape with a sun terrace and a jacuzzi hot tub. Although the home's traditional elements may not be to everyone's taste, modern furnishings present a comfortable space where guests can relax after days out discovering the Province of Macerata and surrounding areas.

If you never wanted to leave this slice of countryside heaven, we’d get it. But this corner of Italy is one of the last areas that isn’t yet on the tourist trail, so you can explore the region of Marche and its beaches, walled cities, and archaeological sites with ease.

Surrounded by sprawling Umbrian countryside, this villa is everything we want from an Italian villa. The interiors are rustic and homespun – think antique furnishings, a farmhouse-style kitchen and lovingly restored timber ceiling beams. Wrought iron beds with crisp white sheets promise a blissful slumber and the open-plan living area makes entertaining a breeze. Our favourite addition, however, is the sauna – it’s exactly what you need after long walks through the nearby valleys. 

Outside, you’ll find fragrant gardens bordered by olive groves and fig trees. Let the afternoon slip by from the comfort of a poolside lounger before rounding up your group for an alfresco feast on the pergola. If you fancy a change of scenery, take the short drive over to the charming city of Perugia for its Gothic cathedral housing Renaissance paintings and frescoes. Enjoy a glass of something refreshing in a quaint cafe then pore over 3000 works of art in the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria. 

To Be Real

Even though this charming villa sits out in the Umbrian countryside, you can see the medieval fortress of Asissi from the terrace. The winding streets packed with cafés, restaurants and ancient sights are just a five-minute drive away, yet your secluded abode is surrounded by fields and hills for peace and quiet. Plus, there's a traditional osteria serving Umbrian cuisine on the edge of the forest, just 1km from the villa – four bicycles are provided to get around. 

Within the grounds, you’ve got a sparkling swimming pool on the hillside, overlooking the valley below. While away the days floating on the lilo and drying off on the comfy, beanbag-style loungers. To the side of the house, you’ll find a wooden pergola with greenery creeping up the woodwork where alfresco dining comes courtesy of a wood-fired oven. 

Alternatively, you could opt to cook meals in the sleek, modern kitchen inside and dine in the open-plan living area, surrounded by modern artworks. Bold, textured paintings sit on gallery-white walls and striking sculptures populate the corners of rooms. Perhaps the greatest image, though, is the view of hilltop Asissi from the sliding glass doors in the plush living room.
