Walking through central Milan is not something we’d recommend doing in a hurry. You’ll constantly be stopping to admire the ornate architecture, ancient monuments, and some of the most impressive cathedrals in the world. Seven minutes from this city apartment, the pink marble Duomo di Milano awaits. And en route, you’ll pass more awe-inspiring sights such as the Teatro alla Scala and Manzoni House, both just two minutes from home. Now, where were we meant to be going again?

When you return after a long day exploring your magnificent surroundings, you’ll be greeted by a grand lobby. Strut upstairs via a red carpet set over glossy marble floors, with a rose-gold chandelier hanging above. As if you didn’t already feel like a VIP, your host can arrange for a private chef, flower deliveries, city tours, and drivers – all you have to do is ask.

In your apartment, glossy floors continue, but this time in elegant hardwood. Modern interiors dominate the space, with a plush corner sofa and glass dining table setting the 21st-century tone. We love the quirky use of red as the highlight colour in this otherwise understated palette. A small place that punches above its weight, Colour Reversal has been well designed, and that makes a lot of difference. The way that the kitchen fits in with the living room works perfectly from an aesthetic standpoint, and while having the kitchen and the sofa bed in the same room isn’t ideal, we wouldn’t really recommend using that bed anyway. It’s always nice to have the option, however, so we won’t complain.

What makes Colour Inversion special is hard to put your finger on, but that doesn’t mean it should be disregarded. Everything there is perfectly proportioned, so while it is a very small place (it can technically hold four people, but that would be a stretch), it never feels undersized. It’s also just off Corso Buenos Aires, one of the main shopping streets in the city and a lively spot in general.

Simple in style, this apartment is a comfortable and convenient base in Milan. It’s in Porta Venezia, one of Milan’s coolest neighbourhoods, with a wealth of restaurants nearby. You can stroll to the Duomo in just fifteen minutes, and there are excellent transport links – a tram departs for Central Station from just two minutes away. At full occupancy, two guests will sleep on a sofa bed in the living and dining space. This is a practical home-from-home for a city break, with a kitchen to cook in and free wi-fi.

On the edge of Brera and Garibaldi, Artemis is wonderfully placed for both the nightlife that fills the area, and for getting to other parts of the city. The flat has a sense of individuality to it – the design is sophisticated, with lots of beautiful objects that elevate it beyond what you might reasonably expect from a place of its size. It’s all fairly valuable, so for that reason the host, Rita, would prefer to rent to adults, or at least not young children.

Close to the metro, museums, and many delicious eateries, this apartment gets full marks for its location. It's on the cusp of the trendy Brera district, yet only a twenty-minute walk from landmarks like the Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. We love the amount of space on offer inside. The living area is bathed in sunlight and has plenty of room to rest weary feet, though the kitchen is compact. Having two en-suite bathrooms is another bonus – perfect for those wanting privacy.

The terrace, along with the vast windows, helps counter some smaller issues with Bredbeddle. As a whole, it’s a lovely flat – the white walls and brilliant light give it a sense of space and calm. As you step onto the balcony, it’s as if you’re no longer in the city, so intense is the green that greets you on all sides. You are, however, very much in the middle of the city, and there are lots of good places to eat nearby, which is important given that the kitchen is the biggest letdown in the place. It’s very small, and you wouldn’t want to do more than heating up a pot there.

Cumulonimbus shows an inherent understanding of how to combine the old and the new. The modern Foscarini lamps and the sleek kitchen contrast wonderfully with the tiled floors (parquet in other rooms) and the elegant cornices. Given that the second bedroom has a single bed (and a pullout underneath it), the flat would work particularly well for families visiting Milan, and the well-equipped kitchen makes family meals very doable.

All but a five-minute walk to the Corso Venezia – part of the city's upscale Quadrilatero della moda shopping district – this enviable apartment sits right at the heart of the fashion hubbub. Locally, the surrounding area is lovely, benefitting from calm squares, grand architectural statements, and the historic centre is easy to get to on foot – the Duomo di Milano is a twenty-minute stroll away. Back home, you'll find a bright and roomy living space with light neutral tones, soft thoughtful furnishings, chic replica prints and a stylish Castiglioni lamp. The kitchen is colourful and uplifting, with pops of red, plenty of sunlight coming in through the window and a charming dining spot to enjoy breakfast while planning out the day's trips. The bedrooms have their own personalities, with a children's bunk-bed room that will quickly put the kids at ease.

There’s no need to hire a car for a stay in this apartment in Milan’s old town – most of the must-see sights can be reached on foot and there’s a Metro station a minute’s walk away. Located on the top floor of a historical building, you’re away from the hustle and bustle of the streets below so it’s surprisingly quiet for a city centre pad. The minimalist decor here won’t be to everyone’s taste, but we love the mix of white walls and bold window frames. And the large roof terrace is the perfect place to enjoy an aperitivo before heading out for dinner at one of the many local restaurants.

We love the sociable open-plan layout of the main room where tan leather sofas invite you to recline with a glass of wine and a good book, and the dining table beckons intimate meals when you’re not out sampling the city’s fine dining scene. 
 
The bedroom, meanwhile, is just as chic with its floral feature wall and industrial pendant lighting, and there’s a desk space here too should you need to catch up on work. 
 
What’s more, you can enjoy the serenity of the communal 1920s courtyard garden, that not only offers a table and chairs for alfresco morning espressos but also provides a serene buffer between you and the vibrant city just beyond.

Original features such as high ceilings, stuccoes and radiators have been maintained and paired with contemporary furniture, LED site specific art-chandelier, and limited-edition statement artworks. The overall effect is just stunning. There are other more practical highlights – a 24-hour concierge service accessed by scanning a QR code is probably our favourite. Located right next to Corso Buenos Aires, this vibrant area of the city (central north-east) is a mere steps from the central station and within easy reach of the sights. Overall, this home delivers style and substance for both holidaymakers and business travellers.

Only a few minutes away from Centrale, Pastel Playground is well-connected to all parts of Milan and beyond. Considering the central location, this split-level home is a little oasis of tranquillity, which you’ll especially appreciate after a day of exploration. The lower level has a bright hangout spot with great natural light just by the stairs, but that’s not even the best part. The upstairs kitchen which transitions into a glasshouse dining room (and then a rooftop terrace) is quite the experience on its own. A welcoming atmosphere like this is hard to find.

You’ll be surrounded by chic shopping streets in the middle of Brera, just two minutes down the street from the beautiful art gallery Pinacoteca di Brera. You can easily walk to the Duomo di Milano, just fourteen minutes away, or take the twelve-minute saunter to sprawling Parco Sempione. Back at home, you’ll be neatly tucked under the eaves, with characterful exposed wooden beams and bright skylights. The open-plan living area makes the most of the small space, and it’s filled to the brim with charm – the wood kitchen, ornamental fireplace and pops of red that adorn the walls and furniture. The playful library wallpaper and armchair make a good nook for reading, while the bedroom is especially inviting after a long day of exploring on your feet. Sure, at full occupancy, two guests will draw the short straw and sleep on the sofa bed in the living room, but we think this home’s enviable location more than makes up for it. You’ll find Indro Montanelli Gardens just a short walk from the apartment, perfect for a morning stroll or jog, while many of Milan’s key attractions are within easy reach on foot or a short metro ride away.

You can stroll to Giardini Indro Montanelli in a few minutes, and for sights that are further afield, you need only hop on the Porta Venezia metro.

There are views over the Porta Venezia district from this apartment’s private furnished terrace. It's the perfect spot for evening drinks or relaxing on the alfresco sofa and chairs any time of day. Inside, there’s a well-equipped kitchen for creating some Milanese cuisine and plenty of room for entertaining. Located in a historic area of Milan, the area is known for the Corso Buenos Aires with its Neoclassical buildings, as well as many shops and restaurants. Other attractions within walking distance include the Duomo di Milano and the San Babila.

In Milan's trendy Garibaldi district sits this functional home that's ideal for two couples or a family. While relatively simple, the dashes of colour give the interior a bit of personality, and the large windows light up the space. Guests need to let the host know an exact arrival time so keys can be delivered, so check-in isn't the most convenient here – that said, the host is always on hand should you need any help during your stay. And with the home's central location, it's easy to start exploring here.

While Redlake is a nice flat in itself (and Laura is a great host), the most exciting thing about it is the location. 10 Corso Como, the concept store to end all concept stores (it has an art gallery, a restaurant, and even a hotel inside), is right next door, as part of a stretch of high-end shops that act as a foil to the stately boutiques in the Quadrilateral. It’s one of the most fashionable districts in the city.

A spacious and stylish apartment filled with natural light and bags of character, this home is located in an imposing traditional Milanese building right by the city's central train station. It makes a great first impression, with gleaming floors, stained glass windows and a characterful wooden elevator preparing you for what's the come. The cultured owners of this exquisite and soulful home are artsy types, as the original paintings sprinkled throughout the stunning communal areas – created by the host's artist father – or the built-in bookcases will attest. Given its location, transport connections are expectedly excellent, though you're not right in the centre if that's what you're specifically after. Instead, hop on the Metro to reach the heart of the city in under fifteen minutes. Alternatively, embark on a leisurely stroll to the likes of the Duomo di Milano in around forty minutes. Closer by, the likes of Via Tadino and Via San Gregorio – both around a ten-minute walk – have plenty of options when it comes to drinking and dining.

This minimal and practical apartment in Porta Venezia is a great home base. Porto Venezia is one of the historical gateways to Milan and you’ll enjoy your proximity to GAM - Galleria d'Arte Moderna, The Natural History Museum and Indro Montanelli Gardens. Perfectly connected, this apartment is just steps away from the metro, so you can take your adventures further afield, too. Though the kitchenette is only equipped for light bites, this space offers all the modern amenities you need for a comfortable stay.
