We love the artwork on the walls, the record-shaped coffee table, and the lovely and unexpected pieces dotted around.

The Pigneto neighbourhood was loved by Italian poet and film maestro, Pier Paolo Pasolini, who sought inspiration from its unapologetic streets. Today, the neighbourhood is just as rousing with fresh boutiques, art galleries and cool eateries drawing an offbeat crowd – and this apartment, right on the cusp of the action, fits in perfectly. Inside, you’ll find contemporary-meets-retro design. We loved the botanical feature wall and cherry red theatre chairs. After waking up in bright bedrooms, find a spot to relax with a cappuccino and a book pulled from your host’s collection. When you start to feel peckish, a simple yet sleek kitchen has enough accoutrements to knock up a light brunch. Dig in on the balcony or pack it as a picnic and enjoy at Parco delle Energie, a twenty-minute stroll away.

Housed in a typically Italian, early 20th-century building, this apartment is the ideal bolthole in Rome for a group or family. Designed as a guesthouse, it has hotel-level comfort, like soundproofing and en-suites in every bedroom. This stylish apartment is right around the corner from Termini, Rome's biggest train station, so there's no doubt that the transport links are excellent. But many of the must-see sights can also be reached on foot, including the magnificent Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore five minutes away and The Colosseum just a little further, about a twenty-minute stroll. After fueling up on pasta and gelato at Mercato Centrale Roma across the street, set off for the Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon and The Spanish Steps, all reachable in under half an hour. When you're not off exploring, shopping or sipping Italian wine at one of the bars in this area, rest your tired feet back at home. We love the bold green colours and funky design – picture cowhide rugs, vibrant pop art and leafy wallpaper in the bedroom. The bathroom is also one of our favourites – it has a huge walk-in rain shower that's the perfect way to relax after a busy day. And this pad has more than enough room for two, so there's plenty of space to make yourself at home. In the evenings, pour yourself an aperitif and rustle up a feast in the contemporary kitchen, then end the night with Netflix in bed, nodding off while to the sound of your favourite shows.

With its location just moments from the Spanish Steps, this apartment is hard to beat. It can't get more central than this – you'll be within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Villa Borghese, and countless eateries. After a long day on your feet, you'll appreciate the indoor Jacuzzi waiting for you back home. The overall design is contemporary and chic, featuring open-concept bathrooms that ooze luxury (though privacy is, of course, limited). Travelling as a group of six? Upon request, two guests can kip on single beds in the living area, but we think this home is best for four.

Among streets peppered with restaurants and book shops on one corner, and ancient ruins on the next, Rome’s Castro Pretorio district is a melting pot of history and culture. You can find basilicas, palazzos, and even the Teatro dell'Opera all less than 600 metres from your front door on the famed Via Cavour. Just like its locale, your apartment is full of original character and style.

Set on the first floor of a traditional block, the views from the French windows and private balcony offer a fantastic display of the local lifestyle. You can spot the honey and pink tones of nearby Italian architecture, as mopeds whizz by on the streets and people chat at kerbside cafés (all while you sip prosecco on the outdoor seating).

If you can tear yourself away from these eye-catching city scenes, take a stroll through the home to explore. The original tiled floors are reminiscent of a Roman bath house, with ornate mosaic patterns throughout the lounge, hall, and bedroom. We love the melange of classic features alongside modern, psychedelic art on the walls and Starck-style ghost chairs for dining and working. Just like the ancient city, this home has entered the 21st century in the most elegant fashion.

With the Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, and even the Roman Forum all within walking distance, this four-bedroom apartment couldn’t be in a better spot for sightseeing. You’ll be right in the heart of historic Rome, but it’s not just the location we love about this home. The apartment is bright and spacious, spread over two floors at the top of a charming old building. There’s plenty of space to spread out, including a well-appointed kitchen and separate dining room, plus a living area that opens onto a sunny terrace (a real treat in the centre of the city). The only downside is there’s no lift, however being up high means you’re rewarded with glorious views of the Roman rooftops.

There are plenty of restaurants and cafes surrounding this home, too, or do some cooking in the kitchen here – it’s relatively compact but has everything you need. The living room is bright, and it also sleeps guests five and six on a sofa bed. One of the bedrooms has a desk as well in case you need to work from home – this place is ideal for business and leisure travellers.

Some of Rome's most endearing attractions are nearby – walk to the Trevi fountain in just over ten minutes and the Coliseum in fifteen. This home is as impressive as its location. From the Carrara marble kitchen countertop, vintage door and Missoni wallpaper, to the pretty private courtyard – it isn't easy to pick the best feature of this home. The style and décor here have the signature of a popular Roman interior designer, Alessandra Danese, for an additional Italian touch. Prepare some panzanella to enjoy outside with a glass of wine, or let the friendly host arrange a private chef to prepare some classic Roman cuisine for you and your guests. This home and its setting are just perfect.

It’s easy to work out where the owner found inspiration for this gallery-like apartment – all you need to do is wander around the local neighbourhood of Monti. Bustling cafés, ornate architecture, and ancient grandeur is all around. A nine-minute stroll in either direction will take you to two of the city’s most majestic sights – the Colosseum and the Foro Romano. With antiquity and arts all around you, the theme continues as you return home.

Many of us are content with painting walls in a calming, neutral tone, but the owner of this apartment had bigger plans. In a nod to the frescoes of the city, the walls are painted in trompe-l'œil effect – with clever positioning of the mirrors, the artwork appears in 3D. While the kitchen tiles and dining table have also enjoyed some brushwork, and this art project was just one effort in the restoration of this nineteenth-century home.

We love the terracotta-coloured tilework, adorned by vintage pieces of furniture dotted throughout the living space and bedroom. Pad across tiles and decorative rugs towards the double doors – this scene isn’t an optical illusion. You’ve got a private balconette with colourful flowers and scenes of Roman streets below. Is there any better spot for a chilled glass of prosecco?

When we say that this home is a stone’s throw from the Trevi Fountain, we really mean it. Or should we say a coin’s throw? Watch where you’re aiming that penny, because this apartment is just steps away from Rome’s most striking water feature. In a quiet lane away from clamouring tourists, this spot has world-famous attractions, but with a local vibe. Stepping in to look around the decor, you notice a delightful mixture of old and new. Keep an eye out for chunky wooden beams, parquet floors, and original masonry as you settle down on antique furniture. Then there’s a somewhat contemporary Scandi look, with minimalist bedspreads, stepped bed frames, and modern, white shelved walls. These shelves are packed with literature and art books. Take your pick from the collection and perch in the study – with its twisted gold column, hardwood furnishings, and vintage typewriter, you’ll feel every bit the European intellectual. A stroll in the immediate neighbourhood will take you to jewellery boutiques and hidden wine bars for a glass of barolo. Descend the famous Spanish Steps to the Piazza di Spagna, just over five minutes from your home – from here, you can explore all the sights of the city by metro.


Baroque Waters

Just north of Rome’s historic centre you’ll find this apartment provides a calm city sanctuary. There’s a private terrace with outdoor seating for evening drinks or a morning coffee. You’ll also find the rooms are well suited to laidback social gatherings or catch up work sessions. Housekeeping and airport transfers can be arranged on request along with guided tours. Plus, it’s just a short stroll through the streets of Pinciano to Villa Borghese Park, while galleries, restaurants and shops can all be found within easy reach. 


The Angelica 

Step into the Art Nouveau sunroom of this period apartment and just soak up its vintage style and warm character. Surrounded by extraordinary windows – some frosted for privacy, others with stained glass – along with huge houseplants and antique furnishings, it's a striking space. Read on the sofa or linger over coffee at the dining table in the morning light. Overlooking a lush garden, it's certainly the highlight of the home. But there's plenty more to love about this place. Small, but perfectly functional, the kitchen leads to a hallway and a snug TV room with its own dining table. The pretty master bedroom is beautifully decorated, with plenty of storage and a desk, while the ensuite second bedroom has its own desk and a fabulous tiled floor. There's even the option of adding a cot if you're travelling as a family. With such easy access around the city from this spot, you'll be surprised how peaceful and quiet it is – yet it's surrounded by excellent shops and restaurants and it's just a fifteen-minute walk from the Colosseum.

Situated right around the corner from the iconic Colosseum, this three-bedroom apartment is the ideal spot for families and groups seeking the best that Rome has to offer. In the morning, enjoy your coffee out on the balcony, where you can feel the bustly atmosphere of the Eternal City emanate from the streets. While the decor and furniture can feel a bit dated in parts, the true highlight of this home is its stellar location – with the Colosseum and the Roman Forum just down the road, you can’t go far wrong in this home.

If you prefer to be based near a green space, then this apartment could be perfect. It’s a short walk from the Villa Borghese with its vast park and historic buildings. The location is a little out of the main tourist area, but public transport links are close by and easy to use. With a terrace overlooking the rooftops of Rome, this home is a great place to relax after a day of sightseeing. The light living room here also sleeps two guests on a sofa bed at full occupancy. And while the kitchen has no oven and is compact, there are a variety of eateries in the locale.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a better location than this central Rome apartment. The must-sees of Via Veneto, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, and Villa Borghese are all just minutes away on foot. Set on the top floor of a historic building, your host has gone above and beyond to ensure you'll have everything you need to settle in. Expect designer details like Italian baths and artisan lamps, antique furniture, and original oil paintings. If you're a full house, it's worth noting that two guests will be sleeping on the sofa bed in the living area. Three guests will also share one of the bedrooms, featuring a king-sized bed and a single bed. While this won't suit everyone, we think it could work out great for sharing with family or close friends.

Just a short stroll from the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain and Piazza Barberini, this large, elegant apartment has a fantastic address. Villa Borghese Gardens, the Pantheon and the Colosseum can also be easily reached on foot. With high ceilings and plenty of natural light, this is a great home-from-home for your stay in Rome. There’s a private balcony perfect for a morning coffee and one of the bedrooms has a desk for when you need to catch up on work. Your hosts have thought of everything here – guests can also personalise their sleep experience with a pillow menu. If you're looking for a luxurious, central and comfortable stay in the Eternal City, then this apartment is ideal.

For a centrally located apartment in Rome, look no further. This elegant apartment is on the fourth floor of a historic building right in the heart of the city, a two-minute walk from Piazza Navona. The Pantheon, Campo dei Fiori, and Vatican are all within ten minutes of this delightful home. Look forward to 1800s parquet flooring and high, beamed ceilings, along with a cosy living space with views of Rome. Bright and comfortable, this apartment is suitable for long stays. 

Eternal Navona

Aperitivo might have a small footprint, but it’s unusual in that it’s a real house, spread over three floors, from the ground to the (magical) roof terrace. It’s been put together with a lot of care – this much is evident – and a lot of the furniture has been cleverly made from repurposed materials, such as the chest of drawers that used to be an old trunk. Finding this sort of place in the middle of Monti isn’t easy, and we’re very happy to have come across Aperitivo.

The scarlet accented kitchen is all set to host sociable breakfasts over fresh coffee and locally bought pastries, while the glass dining table is the perfect spot to gather for a celebratory Italian feast when you’re not out sampling the local trattorias. 
 
With a pair of pared-back yet wonderfully comfy bedrooms as well as sleek bathrooms to get any day off on the right foot, you’re all set for a carefree stay. You’re also a ten-minute walk from the Pantheon, while Campo de' Fiori is twenty minutes on foot from your door.

This elegant apartment is in a restored 16th-century palazzo – and it looks the part. You’ll step over the marble tiles of the entrance into a magnificent home filled with art and furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries. Ceiling frescos and glittering chandeliers can be found throughout the home, which also boasts a private terrace overlooking the cupola of Santa Agnese in Piazza Navona. The piazza is just a stone’s throw away, and you’ll be a short walk from the likes of the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain. Just perfect.

Soul of Rome

With its contemporary style full of sleek furnishings and decor, this is slice of modern living in an especially ancient part of Rome. Find yourselves right in the thick of the action as soon as you leave your door, with the Piazza Navona and Campo de Fiori close by, and the iconic Pantheon just down the street. When you’ve had your fill of sightseeing, kick off your shoes and climb into the cosy bed, or have a coffee outside in the courtyard.

This modern apartment has the best of historic Rome right on the doorstep. You can walk to the Spanish Steps in five minutes, the Trevi fountain in ten, and the Colosseum in thirty. In such a central location, you'll have your pick of authentic trattorias and buzzing bars. But if you prefer to unwind at home after a day on your feet, the open-plan kitchen and dining area is ideal for preparing home-cooked dinners. And if you need to catch up on work, the dining table doubles up nicely as a desk, too.

Just steps away from Rome's Termini train station, this apartment is in a really convenient location. The Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, the Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps are all within walking distance too. There’s also a range of pizzerias, trattorias and cafes surrounding this home which has an open-plan living space with a modern kitchen. This room also sleeps two guests on a sofa bed when needed – the apartment is perfect for a city break.

Before we even arrived at Soft Shading, we were struck by the location. It’s so close to the Trevi fountain that the only danger is you’ll end up stuck among all the tourists. It’s very new inside, and the modern fittings contrast nicely with some of the original structural features, like the ceilings. The only drawback is the slightly inadequate living room, upstairs, and without space for a full house, but as it’s right in the middle of the city, you won’t be spending much time in.


Soft Shading

Soft colours anchor Centurion Flax’s interior – a savvy decision that prevents anything from overshadowing the beautiful frescoes on the ceiling. As a whole, it’s a relaxing, grown-up place, never brash, and with an air of quality to the furniture and fittings. There’s also a small balcony, looking out onto Via Palermo, but it’s too small to spend a lot of time outside. Besides, there are so many interesting bars and cafes around that if you were after aperitivo or breakfast, you aren’t short of options.

The views over Rome from this apartment’s large rooftop terrace are fantastic. It’s a great place to relax with its outdoor dining area and sun loungers. Inside is impressive too, with its living room with double-height ceilings and a mezzanine chill-out area. Another highlight is the location – you’ll be a short walk from the opera house and the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme museum. Other attractions within walking distance include many of the city’s key monuments, such as the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum.

Historic Oasis

Situated on the famous street Via Merulana in the San Giovanni district, this is an excellently located home in a lively bourgeois area with good transport links to the rest of the city. The rooms are large and bright, all recently renovated with minimal modern design. The style of the home is more industrial than cosy thanks to the steel kitchen, prevalence of clean lines and minimal contemporary lighting, but that doesn’t compromise the comfort of the home. We did notice that the WiFi was notably slow, however, which might pose a problem for some guests. 

The Silver Dove

Obsidian & Cream is a quietly stylish home located in the South West of Rome in the heart of Trastevere, renowned for its narrow streets and authentic Italian feel. Here, the city's busiest sights are left behind for charming backstreets, lined by cosy cafes and shops. You'll be able to stroll along the River Tiber, take a trip to the Basilica Di Santa Maria (a two-minute walk away), and come back to relax in this welcoming apartment all in an afternoon's escapades. With sleek bathrooms and two truly comfortable bedrooms as well as extra space on the sofa bed, this humble abode would suit a group of friends in Rome for a few days perfectly. While there may be lots of sights to tick off around the city, the home invites guests to unwind in pure comfort as the warm, earthy tones and rustic charm throughout, makes for a laid-back ambience worth writing home about. We particularly love dark wooden doors and beams that run across the ceilings – as well as the beautiful stone sink in the master bathroom. Trust us when we say, you won't want to leave the relaxed way of living here, let alone the feeling of zen that flows freely around this apartment.
