The Pigneto neighbourhood was loved by Italian poet and film maestro, Pier Paolo Pasolini, who sought inspiration from its unapologetic streets. Today, the neighbourhood is just as rousing with fresh boutiques, art galleries and cool eateries drawing an offbeat crowd – and this apartment, right on the cusp of the action, fits in perfectly. Inside, you’ll find contemporary-meets-retro design. We loved the botanical feature wall and cherry red theatre chairs. After waking up in bright bedrooms, find a spot to relax with a cappuccino and a book pulled from your host’s collection. When you start to feel peckish, a simple yet sleek kitchen has enough accoutrements to knock up a light brunch. Dig in on the balcony or pack it as a picnic and enjoy at Parco delle Energie, a twenty-minute stroll away.

Housed in a typically Italian, early 20th-century building, this apartment is the ideal bolthole in Rome for a group or family. Designed as a guesthouse, it has hotel-level comfort, like soundproofing and en-suites in every bedroom. The decor has a bit of mid-century flair with parquet floor, a turquoise sofa and geometrically patterned wallpaper. This stylish apartment is right around the corner from Termini, Rome's biggest train station, so there's no doubt that the transport links are excellent. But many of the must-see sights can also be reached on foot, including the magnificent Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore five minutes away and The Colosseum just a little further, about a twenty-minute stroll. After fueling up on pasta and gelato at Mercato Centrale Roma across the street, set off for the Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon and The Spanish Steps, all reachable in under half an hour. When you're not off exploring, shopping or sipping Italian wine at one of the bars in this area, rest your tired feet back at home. We love the bold green colours and funky design – picture cowhide rugs, vibrant pop art and leafy wallpaper in the bedroom. The bathroom is also one of our favourites – it has a huge walk-in rain shower that's the perfect way to relax after a busy day. And this pad has more than enough room for two, so there's plenty of space to make yourself at home. In the evenings, pour yourself an aperitif and rustle up a feast in the contemporary kitchen, then end the night with Netflix in bed, nodding off while to the sound of your favourite shows.

The good-sized open-plan living space is a great place to relax (this room also sleeps guests five and six on a sofa bed). Whether you’re a family or friends, your host is always on hand to ensure you have a fantastic stay.

This beautiful penthouse apartment is just the ticket for those looking for a relaxing stay away from the tourist crowds. Located in Rome’s Sallustiano neighbourhood, you’re far enough away from the city’s heavily crowded areas while still being able to reach all the main sights on foot or by public transport. Inside, a neutral palette sets a calming scene with wood floors and pops of blue in the pared-back decor. You’ll immediately be struck by the dazzling amount of natural light in the living area, thanks to the large glass doors that open up onto the first of two terraces. This first one – off of the living room – is a whopping 538 square feet and boasts several tables and chairs, a covered seating area as well as an outdoor shower to enjoy. This is the ideal spot to congregate at sundown over aperitifs and alfresco meals, while the second terrace – up the flight of stairs in the living room – is a rooftop haven with its sun chairs and equally majestic rooftop vistas, ideal for catching those Italian afternoon rays. Back inside, the two bedrooms are simple yet elegant, offering dreamy canvases for a blissful night’s sleep. When you’re ready to head out and explore, make a beeline for Villa Borghese (a ten-minute walk) or stroll just twenty minutes to throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain. With plenty of pizzerias and traditional, family-friendly trattorias along Via Flavia (a one-minute walk), as well as a plethora of shops and historic buildings on your doorstep, you’ve got everything you need for a glorious Roman holiday.

This room also sleeps two guests on a sofa bed when needed – the apartment is perfect for a city break.

This apartment boasts an unbeatable location in Rome, just above Piazza Barberini. Staying in such a central spot means you’ll be within walking distance of many of Rome’s most iconic attractions – the Trevi Fountain is only a few minutes away. You’ll also be perfectly placed to hit the shops. This is an excellent base for a family, with interconnected rooms and an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen space. Heavy packers, be warned – there are quite a few stairs to tackle here.

With heaps of Italian soul and rustic charm, this quiet, well-kept and beautifully appointed apartment offers everything needed for that dolce vita. For the location, you're surrounded by local authenticity and just a seven-minute walk to the emblematic Colosseum. Find an assortment of eateries, wine bars and classy cafés to enjoy an alfresco lunch in the sun, before working off any over-indulgences with a gentle fourteen-minute stroll to Trevi Fountain – pennies at the ready. We also have to mention the apartment being on the cusp of Monti and Campitelli – both are full of beautiful piazzas, windy backstreets and family-run trattorias. Back home, we think there's somewhat of a contemporary Scandi feel, with plain bedspreads, pared-back furnishings and white shelved walls. Modern and minimalist, you'll also notice the elegant marble floors, quirky wallpaper prints and low-hanging light bulbs that we really loved.

This apartment may be in the heart of Rome, but there’s something distinctly country-chic about the decor. Period pieces – dressers, doors and the kitchen table – are all rough white-washed and feel rustic. The sound system is vintage, and the armchairs in the living room are upholstered in gloriously kitsch floral patterns. The jewel in the crown of the apartment is the sprawling outdoor terrace, which has sofas in sunny spots for a dose of vitamin D, and shaded nooks under parasols for when the heat gets too much. The bamboo pergola covered a couple of outdoor gas hobs, so you can cook and dine alfresco. Flowers and pot plants bloom for every corner and climb trellises for a bit of privacy. If you want to know just how central you are, just head out to the downstairs balcony and spot the Colosseum at the end of your street.

A Roman Reign

Despite its position in an old, atmospheric square near Campo de’ Fiori, Falconry has been renovated recently, and most of the furniture has been made to measure, making the whole place feel very well crafted. Everything fits together, from the parquet floor to the various lamps, and even the terrace is taken care of, and not an afterthought. High up among the rooftops, it feels like a little refuge from the hectic city below.

It’s easy to work out where the owner found inspiration for this gallery-like apartment – all you need to do is wander around the local neighbourhood of Monti. Bustling cafés, ornate architecture, and ancient grandeur is all around. A nine-minute stroll in either direction will take you to two of the city’s most majestic sights – the Colosseum and the Foro Romano. With antiquity and arts all around you, the theme continues as you return home.

Many of us are content with painting walls in a calming, neutral tone, but the owner of this apartment had bigger plans. In a nod to the frescoes of the city, the walls are painted in trompe-l'œil effect – with clever positioning of the mirrors, the artwork appears in 3D. While the kitchen tiles and dining table have also enjoyed some brushwork, and this art project was just one effort in the restoration of this nineteenth-century home.

We love the terracotta-coloured tilework, adorned by vintage pieces of furniture dotted throughout the living space and bedroom. Pad across tiles and decorative rugs towards the double doors – this scene isn’t an optical illusion. You’ve got a private balconette with colourful flowers and scenes of Roman streets below. Is there any better spot for a chilled glass of prosecco?

Step into the Art Nouveau sunroom of this period apartment and just soak up its vintage style and warm character. Surrounded by extraordinary windows – some frosted for privacy, others with stained glass – along with huge houseplants and antique furnishings, it's a striking space. Read on the sofa or linger over coffee at the dining table in the morning light. Overlooking a lush garden, it's certainly the highlight of the home. But there's plenty more to love about this place. Small, but perfectly functional, the kitchen leads to a hallway and a snug TV room with its own dining table. The pretty master bedroom is beautifully decorated, with plenty of storage and a desk, while the ensuite second bedroom has its own desk and a fabulous tiled floor. There's even the option of adding a cot if you're travelling as a family. With such easy access around the city from this spot, you'll be surprised how peaceful and quiet it is – yet it's surrounded by excellent shops and restaurants and it's just a fifteen-minute walk from the Colosseum.

Situated on the famous street Via Merulana in the San Giovanni district, this is an excellently located home in a lively bourgeois area with good transport links to the rest of the city. The rooms are large and bright, all recently renovated with minimal modern design. The style of the home is more industrial than cosy thanks to the steel kitchen, prevalence of clean lines and minimal contemporary lighting, but that doesn’t compromise the comfort of the home. We did notice that the WiFi was notably slow, however, which might pose a problem for some guests.

With its location just moments from the Spanish Steps, this apartment is hard to beat. It can't get more central than this – you'll be within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Villa Borghese, and countless eateries. After a long day on your feet, you'll appreciate the indoor Jacuzzi waiting for you back home. The overall design is contemporary and chic, featuring open-concept bathrooms that ooze luxury (though privacy is, of course, limited). Travelling as a group of six? Upon request, two guests can kip on single beds in the living area, but we think this home is best for four.

Spagna Relaxation

The Duchess is a comfortable place with lots going for it, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t start with that view. A city like Rome is full of views, but even so, this one is special, and the terrace itself is beautiful, with the furniture, the awning and the flowers all around (in summer, at least). This, along with the various antiques inside, makes you feel as if you’re in a Rome that existed 200 years ago, one that’s since been lost. 


The Duchess

Brilliantly situated in Monti, one of Rome's most ancient neighbourhoods, this top-floor apartment is truly something special. There's no question that the private terrace is the crown jewel of the place. With a charming bistro table and an abundance of sunshine, it's the perfect spot to start the morning with an espresso and a pastry – and of course, end the evening with a bottle of Italian wine as the world passes by below you. 

Elsewhere, you'll find two quaint Juliet balconies – not ideal for sitting, but the view of the bustling street below is as Roman as it gets. The rest of the apartment is filled with light, packed with character and super stylish. Curl up on the cream-coloured sofa and watch a flick on Netflix, rustle up homecooked pasta in the kitchen and work from home at the desk in the second bedroom. There's more than enough space here to spread out and make yourself at home.

And the options for exploring are endless. The forum and the Colosseum are less than a ten-minute walk away – and there's plenty more sightseeing where that came from. Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore is also within walking distance and two metro lines are nearby for when you fancy visiting landmarks further into the city. Or just stay local and wine and dine the night away at the restaurants, cafes and bars on your doorstep, including a delicious gelateria right downstairs for some quintessentially Italian gelato.

Back at home, this apartment makes quite a first impression with its grand, period exterior and a spiraling internal staircase leading to your door. The décor pairs contemporary furnishings alongside period features, including exposed original brickwork and timber-clad ceilings of high and mighty proportions. And despite its prime central location, our guests love how quiet this home feels –⁠ particularly in the bedrooms, which overlook a peaceful internal courtyard. Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight (and ten, at a stretch) in the Jewish Quarter isn’t as straightforward as you might think. Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight and has a view as good as Teatro’s is even harder. It looks down onto the Largo di Torre Argentina, which holds the ruins of four temples and Pompey’s Theatre. It’s a fantastic spot, and Teatro makes the most of it, with a simple design intended to not interfere.

Finding a street close to it all but not inundated with tourists is the holy grail in Rome – and that's precisely where you'll find this apartment. We call it the Goldilocks zone. But, ever the professional, your host Michele hasn’t used that as an excuse to rest on his laurels. The flat itself is in perfect condition, and while it doesn’t have the feeling of a family home, that’s often a good thing when it's not a sprawling home with space for all the host's personal items. The two bedrooms are on opposite sides of the flat, which is perfect for groups of friends travelling together, though families might want little ones closer by, or not. We understand. Sandwiched between the river and lively Campo de' Fiori, you're in a prime location to explore the city. The square is home to the city's most vibrant (and occasionally overpriced) street market (Monday-Saturday mornings). Still, this famous foodie haven is a good place to stock up on fresh produce, just a five-minute walk from your apartment. Cross over the stone footbridge, Ponte Sisto, and within a couple of minutes, you'll be immersed in trendy Trastevere. With its cobbled streets lined with charmingly faded facades, innovative trattorias, and craft cocktail bars, there's plenty to keep you occupied well into the night.

With a bright living area and a cool industrial design, this apartment is perfect for groups. Three comfortable bedrooms and a double sofa bed ensure there's enough space for everyone – we can easily imagine family breakfasts in the kitchen before setting off on a Roman adventure. All the essentials are covered, too, from air conditioning to kitchen appliances. Plus, the location right by Termini train station makes zipping around the city centre a breeze. You can also walk to the Colosseum, less than thirty minutes away.

Situated in Rome’s Campo de' Fiori, this apartment is ideal for those who want a base with all the necessary comforts but aren't too concerned about frills. That said, the private terrace is pretty wow, with a lounge area, dining area and sweeping city views. We like the traditional features, but you might find the kitchen and bathrooms a little dated. What sold us on this pad was the terrace, the enclosed patio, and the central location – from here, you’re a short walk from the Pantheon and the Roman Forum, while you’ll find plenty of trattorias, neighbourhood bars and little cafes just off your doorstep.

A Touch of Rome

For a stay in the Eternal City, this apartment has a lot to offer. Featuring two terraces, impressive views and contemporary rooms, you’ll find everything you could need for your own Roman holiday. The layout works perfectly for an adults-only escape or families in search of comfort, simplicity and space to stretch out. Your host is also on hand to help organise extras like housekeeping, private transfers and guided tours. Plus, you can walk to parks, galleries, cafes and restaurants, while the close proximity to public transport means its easy to explore further afield.

Ask any Roman and they'll tell you how the Lateranense Palace isn’t as famous as the neighbouring Dome of St. Peter’s, but when you see it from a vantage point like this, it’s hard to say exactly why that is. It’s visible from the living room, balcony and one of the bedrooms, tying the whole apartment together in its grandeur and elegance. Plus you're only a fifteen-minute walk from one of the seven wonders of the world – the Colosseum. Inside, the home is bright and roomy, with a stylish navy sofa, gold accents, tasteful artwork and plenty of light reads that makes for a calming spot to unwind with a good book and a limoncello. Watch the wondering tourists below, as you bask in the sunshine streaming into the apartment. Rustle up a quick amatriciana in the sleek white kitchen, and plate up your home-cooking perfection on the swanky dining table. Marble bathrooms also add that air of luxury too, but all of this, though, is beside the point when you have a view as charming as this one.

Deep within the narrow, medieval streets of Rome, this period building hides a surprisingly modern apartment for up to five guests. It's not a huge space but it's been cleverly configured to make the most of what it has – and to make it feel comfortable and high-end at the same time. Decorated in on-trend whites, creams and greys, it's bright and fresh. The kitchenette is stowed away in a cupboard-like space in the living room and while it's perfect for the basics, it's not going to appeal to keen home cooks – but this is Rome, and some of the best restaurants, cafes and bars in the world are right on your doorstep. Our favourite feature of this home is the view onto the charming Piazza dei Satiri outside. And while we're talking location, the famous Campo de’ Fiori market is just around the corner.

This traditional apartment sits just a two-minute walk from the Spanish Steps, in a fabulous location in Rome. The large windows look out over Palazzo Torlonia and Via Bocca di Leone, and you’ll have plenty of restaurants and bars within easy reach. When you want to explore more of Rome, there are convenient metro lines nearby. The apartment boasts elegant old-world touches including chandeliers and wood-beamed ceilings. There’s plenty of room for everyone to gather together in the living and dining spaces, whether you’re dining in or just enjoying a pre-dinner cocktail.

Step off a leafy Esquilino street and through the huge old doors to find this fourth-floor apartment in all of its whitewashed glory. When it’s time for dinner, you couldn’t be better placed to sample authentic Italian grub. Your home is surrounded by family-run bakeries, ristorantes and those all-important gelaterias.

Just look out of the windows – no more battling like a gladiator with fellow tourists to get that perfect shot – how fabulous is that? Modern and bright, this home is an elegant journey into Italian 70's chic meets classical design, with its parquet flooring, marble columns, and plush velvet sofas. Gather around the dining table for cocktails at one of the best vantage points in Rome to see the sunset, and marvel at this magnificent monument set against a fiery sky.
