Rome is a great city for spotting frescoes, but these mainly date back hundreds — if not thousands — of years. This apartment in the San Saba neighbourhood of the city shows that the tradition is far from long-dead. In the living room and many of the bedrooms, a modern variation on the wall paintings can be seen, adding colour and a sense of grandiosity to the interior.

Elsewhere, the design is wonderfully contemporary, particularly the curvy white dining chairs, sleek burgundy kitchen and equally pristine bathrooms. Another standout feature has to be the large private terrace, which has plenty of seating on which to enjoy the peace and quiet of this residential neighbourhood.

When you're in the mood for sightseeing, possibly the most famous fresco in the world — Michaelangelo's ceiling in the Sistine Chapel — takes just under twenty minutes to reach by taxi, but there are other notable attractions a bit closer, too. The Baths of Caracalla are ten minutes away on foot and the Colosseum takes about double that time.

This stylish apartment is right around the corner from Termini, Rome's biggest train station, so there's no doubt that the transport links are excellent. But many of the must-see sights can also be reached on foot, including the magnificent Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore five minutes away and The Colosseum just a little further, about a twenty-minute stroll. After fueling up on pasta and gelato at Mercato Centrale Roma across the street, set off for the Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon and The Spanish Steps, all reachable in under half an hour. When you're not off exploring, shopping or sipping Italian wine at one of the bars in this area, rest your tired feet back at home. We love the bold green colours and funky design – picture cowhide rugs, vibrant pop art and leafy wallpaper in the bedroom. The bathroom is also one of our favourites – it has a huge walk-in rain shower that's the perfect way to relax after a busy day. And this pad has more than enough room for two, so there's plenty of space to make yourself at home. In the evenings, pour yourself an aperitif and rustle up a feast in the contemporary kitchen, then end the night with Netflix in bed, nodding off while to the sound of your favourite shows.

The Duchess is a comfortable place with lots going for it, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t start with that view. A city like Rome is full of views, but even so, this one is special, and the terrace itself is beautiful, with the furniture, the awning and the flowers all around (in summer, at least). This, along with the various antiques inside, makes you feel as if you’re in a Rome that existed 200 years ago, one that’s since been lost.

Housed in a Roman palazzo of high and mighty proportions, from the outside, this place is everything you'd imagine your Italian bolthole to be. Step inside, and the home has been beautifully reimagined for modern living with sleek, polished lines and a monochrome palette providing the perfect juxtaposition to the ornate grandeur outside.

Roll out of the king-sized bed and pad over to the glamourous kitchen area to fire up the coffee machine as you hatch plans for the day ahead. There are all the gadgets going to rustle up a bite to eat, but with coffee bars bursting at the seams in the streets below, you might rather grab breakfast on the go.

Get off to a flying start exploring the city at the Colosseum –⁠ the entrance is just a four-minute walk from your door (best seen early in the mornings to beat the crowds). And when it's time to cast your net further into the city, the metro is just steps from your door (one minute to be exact) –⁠  though we doubt you'll need it. Take your pick from the other must-see sights reachable on foot - the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, and the Trevi Fountain are less than a half-an-hour stroll away. 

Hungry Lions

Simply put, Paparazzi is stylish, well-kept and right in the middle of Rome. Domenico is incredibly attentive as a host, and always ready to help, and while there are a few issues that we found, the majority were unavoidable given the age and positioning of the building (fairly slow wi-fi, for example), and the positives far outweigh the negatives. The apartment has been redone recently and you can really tell, particularly in the bathrooms, which feel very modern and sleek.

With its location just moments from the Spanish Steps, this apartment is hard to beat. It can't get more central than this – you'll be within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Villa Borghese, and countless eateries. After a long day on your feet, you'll appreciate the indoor Jacuzzi waiting for you back home. The overall design is contemporary and chic, featuring open-concept bathrooms that ooze luxury (though privacy is, of course, limited). Travelling as a group of six? Upon request, two guests can kip on single beds in the living area, but we think this home is best for four.

Spagna Relaxation

Among streets peppered with restaurants and book shops on one corner, and ancient ruins on the next, Rome’s Castro Pretorio district is a melting pot of history and culture. You can find basilicas, palazzos, and even the Teatro dell'Opera all less than 600 metres from your front door on the famed Via Cavour. Just like its locale, your apartment is full of original character and style.

Set on the first floor of a traditional block, the views from the French windows and private balcony offer a fantastic display of the local lifestyle. You can spot the honey and pink tones of nearby Italian architecture, as mopeds whizz by on the streets and people chat at kerbside cafés (all while you sip prosecco on the outdoor seating).

If you can tear yourself away from these eye-catching city scenes, take a stroll through the home to explore. The original tiled floors are reminiscent of a Roman bath house, with ornate mosaic patterns throughout the lounge, hall, and bedroom. This apartment in Monti is just a short stroll from the iconic Colosseum. Other attractions within walking distance include the Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain and the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, to name just a few. A lot of care and attention has gone into this home, and we love the blend of character features and modern furnishings. The good-sized open-plan living space is a great place to relax (this room also sleeps guests five and six on a sofa bed). Whether you’re a family or friends, your host is always on hand to ensure you have a fantastic stay.

When we say that this home is a stone’s throw from the Trevi Fountain, we really mean it. Or should we say a coin’s throw? Watch where you’re aiming that penny, because this apartment is just steps away from Rome’s most striking water feature. In a quiet lane away from clamouring tourists, this spot has world-famous attractions, but with a local vibe. Stepping in to look around the decor, you notice a delightful mixture of old and new. Keep an eye out for chunky wooden beams, parquet floors, and original masonry as you settle down on antique furniture. Then there’s a somewhat contemporary Scandi look, with minimalist bedspreads, stepped bed frames, and modern, white shelved walls. These shelves are packed with literature and art books. Take your pick from the collection and perch in the study – with its twisted gold column, hardwood furnishings, and vintage typewriter, you’ll feel every bit the European intellectual. A stroll in the immediate neighbourhood will take you to jewellery boutiques and hidden wine bars for a glass of barolo. Descend the famous Spanish Steps to the Piazza di Spagna, just over five minutes from your home – from here, you can explore all the sights of the city by metro.

Situated in Rome’s Campo de' Fiori, this apartment is ideal for those who want a base with all the necessary comforts but aren't too concerned about frills. That said, the private terrace is pretty wow, with a lounge area, dining area and sweeping city views. We like the traditional features, but you might find the kitchen and bathrooms a little dated. What sold us on this pad was the terrace, the enclosed patio, and the central location – from here, you’re a short walk from the Pantheon and the Roman Forum, while you’ll find plenty of trattorias, neighbourhood bars and little cafes just off your doorstep.

This apartment is truly in the heart of Rome. A five-minute walk from Piazza Navona and moments away from Campo de' Fiori, this is the place to be if sightseeing is at the top of your to-do list. You'll find plenty to see and do within walking distance, be it shops and eateries or must-visit landmarks. The apartment is on the second floor and lacks a lift, so you'll have to be comfortable climbing stairs. That said, we think it's a great find. A roomy living area provides ample space to relax, dine together, and even work from home. Just note that the second bedroom is a little snug, making it more suitable for one guest.

Situated right around the corner from the iconic Colosseum, this three-bedroom apartment is the ideal spot for families and groups seeking the best that Rome has to offer. In the morning, enjoy your coffee out on the balcony, where you can feel the bustly atmosphere of the Eternal City emanate from the streets. While the decor and furniture can feel a bit dated in parts, the true highlight of this home is its stellar location – with the Colosseum and the Roman Forum just down the road, you can’t go far wrong in this home.

Obsidian & Cream is a quietly stylish home located in the South West of Rome in the heart of Trastevere, renowned for its narrow streets and authentic Italian feel. Here, the city's busiest sights are left behind for charming backstreets, lined by cosy cafes and shops. You'll be able to stroll along the River Tiber, take a trip to the Basilica Di Santa Maria (a two-minute walk away), and come back to relax in this welcoming apartment all in an afternoon's escapades. With sleek bathrooms and two truly comfortable bedrooms as well as extra space on the sofa bed, this humble abode would suit a group of friends in Rome for a few days perfectly. While there may be lots of sights to tick off around the city, the home invites guests to unwind in pure comfort as the warm, earthy tones and rustic charm throughout, makes for a laid-back ambience worth writing home about. We particularly love dark wooden doors and beams that run across the ceilings – as well as the beautiful stone sink in the master bathroom. It’s easy to work out where the owner found inspiration for this gallery-like apartment – all you need to do is wander around the local neighbourhood of Monti. Bustling cafés, ornate architecture, and ancient grandeur is all around. A nine-minute stroll in either direction will take you to two of the city’s most majestic sights – the Colosseum and the Foro Romano. With antiquity and arts all around you, the theme continues as you return home.

Many of us are content with painting walls in a calming, neutral tone, but the owner of this apartment had bigger plans. In a nod to the frescoes of the city, the walls are painted in trompe-l'œil effect – with clever positioning of the mirrors, the artwork appears in 3D. While the kitchen tiles and dining table have also enjoyed some brushwork, and this art project was just one effort in the restoration of this nineteenth-century home.

We love the terracotta-coloured tilework, adorned by vintage pieces of furniture dotted throughout the living space and bedroom. Pad across tiles and decorative rugs towards the double doors – this scene isn’t an optical illusion. You’ve got a private balconette with colourful flowers and scenes of Roman streets below. Is there any better spot for a chilled glass of prosecco?

Take some fresh produce back to this apartment and rustle up a carbonara and salad to enjoy at your dining table. After dinner, have a seat on the comfy chaise sofa and enjoy a glass of wine. This home is decorated in neutral mushroom hues, and the vases of flowers dotted around give the place a lovely homely feel – and we love the French doors, which allow light to flood in. Centrally located in the eternal city of Rome, this home is a mere stone's throw from several iconic landmarks, including the Ponte Sisto, where you can overlook the Tiber. And some of those sights you might even spot from the balcony, though when it comes to the outdoor seating, we prefer the patio table in the shade of the pergola. As for the home, the rustic charm of the rafters and furnishings is sweet and well-kept. It's worth noting that despite being spacious, this home's sleeping arrangements feature a double sofa bed and another room with two single sofa beds that might be more suitable for children. With two other double beds available, however, it's the ideal pad for a family getaway.

The Roman Centaur

This modern apartment boasts an excellent location in Rome – it’s just a two-minute walk from the Spanish Steps. You’ll be a short walk from many of the Eternal City’s main attractions, including Piazza del Popolo and Villa Borghese. There are also excellent shopping, dining out, and transport options practically on your doorstep. The apartment is contemporary and functional, with high ceilings and a convenient kitchen. At full occupancy, privacy is somewhat limited – two guests will sleep on a sofa bed on the open mezzanine above one of the bedrooms.

From there continue on to the Colosseum, before heading back home for some well-deserved downtime. Enjoy panoramic views over the neighbouring rooftops as you take the elevator up to the top floor, where you'll find your apartment set away from the hustle of it all. Inside, contemporary interiors – carefully selected by local designer Beatrice Medici offer a notable contrast from the historic surroundings of the local area. While funky artwork brings colour to an otherwise minimal design style. Rest up in the bedroom which faces the back courtyard of the home and allows for increased privacy, as well as that all-important peace and quiet after an action-packed day.

Known for its bohemian atmosphere, local trattorias, and artisan shops, this neighbourhood is the perfect stomping grounds for those seeking an authentic stay. You're also an easy stroll into the centre if sightseeing is on your to-do list.

Perched next to the synagogue and the river, Luogo d’Olive is right at the heart of the old Jewish quarter. It’s full of designer furniture, from the Mangiarotti dining table to the Stilnovo chandelier, and this gives it a sense of luxury. However, the abundance of natural light stops any of the design from feeling too heavy or overwhelming, which is always a bit of a risk when decking out a flat with such high-end things.

A short stroll from Campo de’ Fiori and Piazza Navona, this apartment is perfectly located for exploring Rome. It’s ideal for a family that won’t mind the sleeping arrangements, with one guest sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room and one sleeping on an additional sofa bed in the main bedroom. Given its third-floor position, you’ll all need to be able to climb stairs – and you might want to travel light. The exposed wooden beams and traditional decor make this a charming base for seeing the sights of the Eternal City. 

The Eternal Palace

Looking for a central stay in the Eternal City? This apartment sure fits the bill. You'll find it just a short walk from Piazza Navona, putting landmarks, shops, and restaurants at your fingertips. At full capacity, five guests will be on a collection of sofa beds in both the living area and bedroom. If you'd prefer privacy, we think a guest count of four is best. Still, the rustic design is packed with character, and the super convenient location more than makes up for its compact layout.

Nirvana in Navona

This bright studio apartment is nestled in the heart of Rome, boasting views of Piazza Venecia and Via del Corso from the cosy private balcony. We think it's well-suited to couples or solo travellers, though the double sofa bed adds flexibility if you're travelling with friends or family and your host can provide childcare equipment for little ones. You won't find a full kitchen here and the kitchenette lacks an oven, but you'll find plenty of Rome's best restaurants and bars within easy walking distance so you're never far from an authentically mouth-watering meal.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a better location than this central Rome apartment. The must-sees of Via Veneto, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, and Villa Borghese are all just minutes away on foot. Set on the top floor of a historic building, your host has gone above and beyond to ensure you'll have everything you need to settle in. Expect designer details like Italian baths and artisan lamps, antique furniture, and original oil paintings. If you're a full house, it's worth noting that two guests will be sleeping on the sofa bed in the living area. Three guests will also share one of the bedrooms, featuring a king-sized bed and a single bed. While this won't suit everyone, we think it could work out great for sharing with family or close friends.

Nestled in the heart of Rome, this apartment is all about the location. It’s just a short walk to the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps, and the Trevi Fountain – all of the city's must-see sights. That said, while the traditional style may not be everyone’s cup of tea and some areas could benefit from a refresh, we love the added extras here. The living room projector promises an authentic movie night experience, while the terrace is just the spot to enjoy an evening aperitif. There's even a desk in the loft if you're in town on business. Just keep in mind the third bedroom is very small, so a maximum of five adults are allowed.

Situated a short stroll from both the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain, this apartment has a fantastic location for exploring Rome. The Pantheon, the Roman Forum and much more are also within walking distance. There are a variety of shops, cafes and restaurants in the neighbourhood to enjoy too. From this home’s open-plan living space, there are wonderful views of the Basilica of Saint Mary in Cosmedin. You can take in the vistas from the dining table. The kitchen area is quite compact, we would say – there’s no oven, but there’s a hob and a microwave. But, with an address as great as this, will you be spending much time at the apartment?

We love the high ceilings, which reach over 5 metres, and how bright and welcoming this home feels.
