Rome is a great city for spotting frescoes, but these mainly date back hundreds — if not thousands — of years. This apartment in the San Saba neighbourhood of the city shows that the tradition is far from long-dead. In the living room and many of the bedrooms, a modern variation on the wall paintings can be seen, adding colour and a sense of grandiosity to the interior.

Elsewhere, the design is wonderfully contemporary, particularly the curvy white dining chairs, sleek burgundy kitchen and equally pristine bathrooms. Another standout feature has to be the large private terrace, which has plenty of seating on which to enjoy the peace and quiet of this residential neighbourhood.

When you're in the mood for sightseeing, possibly the most famous fresco in the world — Michaelangelo's ceiling in the Sistine Chapel — takes just under twenty minutes to reach by taxi, but there are other notable attractions a bit closer, too. The Baths of Caracalla are ten minutes away on foot and the Colosseum takes about double that time.

The Duchess is a comfortable place with lots going for it, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t start with that view. Just six minutes (on foot) to the emblematic attraction, and a traditional local area full of authentic eateries and beautiful tangerine buildings – you're perfectly placed here. Back home, you'll find a sociable open-plan living room, kitchen and dining area benefitting from sleek grey floors, tasteful artwork of the city by night and plenty of natural light pouring in. Wandering through the home, you'll notice a collection of art and literature books, quirky adornments and funky printed wallpapers in the bedrooms. There, those who are working from home during their stay will be able to power through emails at the dedicated desk spaces. The other thing that really makes the flat stick out is Simona and her hosting. She’s an absolute delight and will do everything possible to make your stay as good as it can be.

It’s ideal for a family that won’t mind the sleeping arrangements, with one guest sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room and one sleeping on an additional sofa bed in the main bedroom. Given its third-floor position, you’ll all need to be able to climb stairs – and you might want to travel light. The exposed wooden beams and traditional decor make this a charming base for seeing the sights of the Eternal City.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better location than this. Set just moments from the Tiber and a short stroll to Rome’s most iconic sights, this apartment makes sightseeing feel effortless. Inside, space is a little tight – as is often the case in this part of town – but large windows in the living area bring in plenty of light. With herringbone floors, stylish furnishings and a smart layout that maximises every inch, it’s perfectly suited for two.

Tucked down a quiet vicolo in Trastevere, this home positions you away from the crowds and yet just a short walk from Rome's top historical attractions, including the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain. Note that you'll need to climb stairs to reach the entrance of this home. However, there's plenty of space to relax, and a sofa bed to accommodate groups of up to four guests. You'll also find a table if you need to work from home. The kitchen lacks an oven, but that said, the area is renowned for its culinary delights, so we reckon you'll be out sampling the local eateries most evenings.

It can't get more central than this – you'll be within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Villa Borghese, and countless eateries. After a long day on your feet, you'll appreciate the indoor Jacuzzi waiting for you back home. The overall design is contemporary and chic, featuring open-concept bathrooms that ooze luxury (though privacy is, of course, limited). Travelling as a group of six? Upon request, two guests can kip on single beds in the living area, but we think this home is best for four.

Situated in Rome’s Campo de' Fiori, this apartment is ideal for those who want a base with all the necessary comforts but aren't too concerned about frills. That said, the private terrace is pretty wow, with a lounge area, dining area and sweeping city views. We like the traditional features, but you might find the kitchen and bathrooms a little dated. What sold us on this pad was the terrace, the enclosed patio, and the central location – from here, you’re a short walk from the Pantheon and the Roman Forum, while you’ll find plenty of trattorias, neighbourhood bars and little cafes just off your doorstep.

Though this roomy apartment is based in a seventeenth-century palazzo, rustic charm is not the only thing on offer. While there are plenty of characterful touches here (think vaulted ceilings, arched doorways, even an original spiral staircase made of Roman brick), what makes this home stand out are the twenty-first-century updates. This stylish apartment is right around the corner from Termini, Rome's biggest train station, so there's no doubt that the transport links are excellent. But many of the must-see sights can also be reached on foot, including the magnificent Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore five minutes away and The Colosseum just a little further, about a twenty-minute stroll. After fueling up on pasta and gelato at Mercato Centrale Roma across the street, set off for the Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon and The Spanish Steps, all reachable in under half an hour. When you're not off exploring, shopping or sipping Italian wine at one of the bars in this area, rest your tired feet back at home. We love the bold green colours and funky design – picture cowhide rugs, vibrant pop art and leafy wallpaper in the bedroom. The bathroom is also one of our favourites – it has a huge walk-in rain shower that's the perfect way to relax after a busy day. And this pad has more than enough room for two, so there's plenty of space to make yourself at home. In the evenings, pour yourself an aperitif and rustle up a feast in the contemporary kitchen, then end the night with Netflix in bed, nodding off while to the sound of your favourite shows.

The location of this apartment is great. It’s just a short walk from the Castel Sant'Angelo and Piazza Cavour, home to Italy’s Supreme Court. You can also visit the Vatican, including the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica, which are also within walking distance. There’s a range of eateries in the locale, too, for when you want a rest from sightseeing. The bright open-plan living space back at this apartment also sleeps guests five and six on a comfy sofa bed. The main bedroom has an en-suite, while bedroom two has a small double bed. Small, but perfectly functional, the kitchen leads to a hallway and a snug TV room with its own dining table. The pretty master bedroom is beautifully decorated, with plenty of storage and a desk, while the ensuite second bedroom has its own desk and a fabulous tiled floor. There's even the option of adding a cot if you're travelling as a family. This apartment is truly in the heart of Rome. A five-minute walk from Piazza Navona and moments away from Campo de' Fiori, this is the place to be if sightseeing is at the top of your to-do list. You'll find plenty to see and do within walking distance, be it shops and eateries or must-visit landmarks. The apartment is on the second floor and lacks a lift, so you'll have to be comfortable climbing stairs. That said, we think it's a great find. A roomy living area provides ample space to relax, dine together, and even work from home. Just note that the second bedroom is a little snug, making it more suitable for one guest.

If you're looking for a fantastic location in Rome, look no further. This home, situated on a pedestrianised street full of restaurants and shops, is just a three-minute stroll from the beautiful Trevi Fountain, while the Spanish Steps are a five-minute walk. The Pantheon and Palazzo del Quirinale are a ten-minute amble, and Piazza Navona is just a few minutes more.

Back at this apartment, designed by a Roman architect and housed in a historical building, there's a wonderful blend of old and new – think character beams, parquet wood floors and modern chandeliers. Pour a Campari and soda and have a rest on the comfy chaise sofa after all that sightseeing in the Eternal City. Then, rustle up a carbonara in the kitchen and enjoy it at your dining table. This home is perfect for a family, friends or business professionals looking for a fabulous central address.

You’ll find this charming apartment on the narrow, atmospheric Via dei Coronari (officially one of the world’s ten most beautiful streets), right in Rome’s historic centre. It’s just a two-minute stroll to buzzing Piazza Navona where cafés and restaurants spill out onto to pavement and ancient fountains still trickle away. Just across the River Tiber, a fifteen-minute walk takes you to the endless museums and Sistine Chapel at The Vatican. Housed in a building dating back to the 1500s, this apartment still radiates old-world charm which can immediately be felt by the 19th-century aedicule at the entrance. The wooden coffered ceiling and herringbone floor harks back to a bygone age and gilded mirrors and antique furnishings complete the feeling that you’ve stepped into an opulent home in the 19th century. Though it may seem like you’re staying in a museum, the practicalities have been thought of as well, with a full kitchen for your morning espresso, and comfy sofas around the flatscreen TV in the lounge.

This comfortable apartment is tucked away on a quiet cobblestone street in the heart of Rome. Just one minute on foot from the Spanish Steps and Piazza di Spagna, it couldn’t be more convenient for seeing the sights of the city. It’s a lively area so you might need to pack earplugs, but you’re in the thick of things, surrounded by bars, restaurants, shops, and world-famous tourist spots. The apartment is on the second floor of a 17th-century building, and there’s no lift so we recommend packing light.

Situated under a ten-minute stroll from Piazza del Popolo, this apartment has a great location. You’ll also be within walking distance of a variety of museums, the Spanish Steps, and Villa Borghese.  In fact, you can see the park of Villa Borghese from this home’s large terrace thanks to its fifth-floor location in a historic building. The stylish open-plan living room is a great place to relax and it also accommodates one guest on a sofa bed at full capacity. This is a great base for your Eternal City visit.

With a bright living area and a cool industrial design, this apartment is perfect for groups. Three comfortable bedrooms and a double sofa bed ensure there's enough space for everyone – we can easily imagine family breakfasts in the kitchen before setting off on a Roman adventure. All the essentials are covered, too, from air conditioning to kitchen appliances. Plus, the location right by Termini train station makes zipping around the city centre a breeze. You can also walk to the Colosseum, less than thirty minutes away.

With heaps of Italian soul and rustic charm, this quiet, well-kept and beautifully appointed apartment offers everything needed for that dolce vita. For the location, you're surrounded by local authenticity and just a seven-minute walk to the emblematic Colosseum. Find an assortment of eateries, wine bars and classy cafés to enjoy an alfresco lunch in the sun, before working off any over-indulgences with a gentle fourteen-minute stroll to Trevi Fountain – pennies at the ready. We also have to mention the apartment being on the cusp of Monti and Campitelli – both are full of beautiful piazzas, windy backstreets and family-run trattorias. Back home, we think there's somewhat of a contemporary Scandi feel, with plain bedspreads, pared-back furnishings and white shelved walls. Modern and minimalist, you'll also notice the elegant marble floors, quirky wallpaper prints and low-hanging light bulbs that we really loved.

Just steps away from Rome's Termini train station, this apartment is in a really convenient location. The Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, the Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps are all within walking distance too. There’s also a range of pizzerias, trattorias and cafes surrounding this home which has an open-plan living space with a modern kitchen. This room also sleeps two guests on a sofa bed when needed – the apartment is perfect for a city break.

Roman Gold Leaf

This apartment boasts an unbeatable location in Rome, just above Piazza Barberini. Staying in such a central spot means you’ll be within walking distance of many of Rome’s most iconic attractions – the Trevi Fountain is only a few minutes away. You’ll also be perfectly placed to hit the shops. This is an excellent base for a family, with interconnected rooms and an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen space. Heavy packers, be warned – there are quite a few stairs to tackle here.

Once owned by famous painter Albert Jill, this apartment lies in the heart of Rome. The decor is a bit dated and children and toddlers aren't permitted, but we think friends or families with older children will settle right in. The wi-fi isn't the strongest in all rooms so it's perhaps not the best for remote working, but Jill's unique art adorns the walls and the location is wonderful. You'll be on a quiet cobblestone street, but you may still hear some non-disruptive outside noise from the city. Within walking distance, you'll find an array of shops, restaurants, and attractions like the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain, with public transport nearby for getting around.

Artist's Haven

Nestled in the historic heart Trastevere, this apartment delivers comfort and ease in a fantastic location. Outside, it’s just a short stroll to local cafes, restaurants and shops. There are also great public transport links – ensuring quick access to iconic sights across the city. Back at home, you’ll find the simple layout makes it easy to switch off an unwind. At full occupancy, two guests will be sleeping on the sofa bed in the living room, but you will have plenty of space to stretch out and socialise. Your host can also help organise a range of extra services – including welcome baskets and guided tours. 

Heart of Life 

It’s easy to work out where the owner found inspiration for this gallery-like apartment – all you need to do is wander around the local neighbourhood of Monti. Bustling cafés, ornate architecture, and ancient grandeur is all around. A nine-minute stroll in either direction will take you to two of the city’s most majestic sights – the Colosseum and the Foro Romano. With antiquity and arts all around you, the theme continues as you return home.

Many of us are content with painting walls in a calming, neutral tone, but the owner of this apartment had bigger plans. In a nod to the frescoes of the city, the walls are painted in trompe-l'œil effect – with clever positioning of the mirrors, the artwork appears in 3D. While the kitchen tiles and dining table have also enjoyed some brushwork, and this art project was just one effort in the restoration of this nineteenth-century home.

We love the terracotta-coloured tilework, adorned by vintage pieces of furniture dotted throughout the living space and bedroom. Pad across tiles and decorative rugs towards the double doors – this scene isn’t an optical illusion. You’ve got a private balconette with colourful flowers and scenes of Roman streets below. Is there any better spot for a chilled glass of prosecco?
