You'll find this contemporary apartment in the lively neighbourhood of Nomentano. Home to bars, restaurants, and university students, it may not be in the centre, but nearby Bologna Station makes it easy to explore via the metro. We love the modern design and the relaxing shades of blue. Despite the lack of living area, there's still plenty of space. Both bedrooms are ample in size and feature desks for remote working, and the main has an additional sofa bed for one guest that can be used as a lounge.

Coppedè isn’t the best-known quarter of the city, but it’s something of an undiscovered gem. The buildings, an enthralling mix of art nouveau, Greek classicism, medieval and baroque, were all built around the same time, and designed by the eponymous architect. As a flat, L'Esploratrice lives up to the area’s reputation for upmarket homes. It’s set over two floors, and retains many of the original, early-twentieth-century features – like the granite floors and carved wooden door frames.

This little apartment is a comfortable base for exploring Rome with everything you need after a day of sightseeing. The open plan kitchen and diner has a dining table that doubles up nicely as a desk, and the kitchenette is great for preparing light bites and authentic breakfasts. When you're all set, head outside to find the nearest metro station around the corner, and whisk yourself to the city centre's most popular attractions – like the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain – in twenty minutes. It seems beside the point to say that Lapis Lazuli isn’t in the city centre – it’s a destination itself. This is one of the most spectacular places in our collection, with every luxury imaginable, from pool, to sauna, to games room, to a working fireplace. The bedrooms are the least exciting part – they’re functional rather than eye-catching, but that’s probably just because the rest of the house is so incredible.

The overall design is contemporary and chic, featuring open-concept bathrooms that ooze luxury (though privacy is, of course, limited). Travelling as a group of six? Upon request, two guests can kip on single beds in the living area, but we think this home is best for four.

Situated a short stroll from both the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain, this apartment has a fantastic location for exploring Rome. The Pantheon, the Roman Forum and much more are also within walking distance. There are a variety of shops, cafes and restaurants in the neighbourhood to enjoy too. From this home’s open-plan living space, there are wonderful views of the Basilica of Saint Mary in Cosmedin. You can take in the vistas from the dining table. The kitchen area is quite compact, we would say – there’s no oven, but there’s a hob and a microwave. But, with an address as great as this, will you be spending much time at the apartment?

When we say that this home is a stone’s throw from the Trevi Fountain, we really mean it. Or should we say a coin’s throw? Watch where you’re aiming that penny, because this apartment is just steps away from Rome’s most striking water feature. In a quiet lane away from clamouring tourists, this spot has world-famous attractions, but with a local vibe. Stepping in to look around the decor, you notice a delightful mixture of old and new. Keep an eye out for chunky wooden beams, parquet floors, and original masonry as you settle down on antique furniture. Then there’s a somewhat contemporary Scandi look, with minimalist bedspreads, stepped bed frames, and modern, white shelved walls. These shelves are packed with literature and art books. Take your pick from the collection and perch in the study – with its twisted gold column, hardwood furnishings, and vintage typewriter, you’ll feel every bit the European intellectual. A stroll in the immediate neighbourhood will take you to jewellery boutiques and hidden wine bars for a glass of barolo. Descend the famous Spanish Steps to the Piazza di Spagna, just over five minutes from your home – from here, you can explore all the sights of the city by metro.

This apartment's address is perfect if you want to be within walking distance of some of Rome’s key landmarks. The Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and the Roman Forum are just a few to mention. You’ll also have plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants on your doorstep. Another highlight of the home, in our opinion, is the terrace with its fire pit, barbecue and dining area. This great outdoor space is accessed from the modern and stylish open-plan living room. And if you need to work while away, two of the comfy bedrooms have desks. We think this apartment has everything you need for your Eternal City stay.

If you prefer to be based near a green space, then this apartment could be perfect. It’s a short walk from the Villa Borghese with its vast park and historic buildings. The location is a little out of the main tourist area, but public transport links are close by and easy to use. With a terrace overlooking the rooftops of Rome, this home is a great place to relax after a day of sightseeing. The light living room here also sleeps two guests on a sofa bed at full occupancy. And while the kitchen has no oven and is compact, there are a variety of eateries in the locale.

It’s easy to work out where the owner found inspiration for this gallery-like apartment – all you need to do is wander around the local neighbourhood of Monti. Bustling cafés, ornate architecture, and ancient grandeur is all around. A nine-minute stroll in either direction will take you to two of the city’s most majestic sights – the Colosseum and the Foro Romano. With antiquity and arts all around you, the theme continues as you return home.

Many of us are content with painting walls in a calming, neutral tone, but the owner of this apartment had bigger plans. In a nod to the frescoes of the city, the walls are painted in trompe-l'œil effect – with clever positioning of the mirrors, the artwork appears in 3D. While the kitchen tiles and dining table have also enjoyed some brushwork, and this art project was just one effort in the restoration of this nineteenth-century home.

We love the terracotta-coloured tilework, adorned by vintage pieces of furniture dotted throughout the living space and bedroom. Pad across tiles and decorative rugs towards the double doors – this scene isn’t an optical illusion. You’ve got a private balconette with colourful flowers and scenes of Roman streets below. Is there any better spot for a chilled glass of prosecco?

This stylish apartment is right around the corner from Termini, Rome's biggest train station, so there's no doubt that the transport links are excellent. But many of the must-see sights can also be reached on foot, including the magnificent Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore five minutes away and The Colosseum just a little further, about a twenty-minute stroll. After fueling up on pasta and gelato at Mercato Centrale Roma across the street, set off for the Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon and The Spanish Steps, all reachable in under half an hour. When you're not off exploring, shopping or sipping Italian wine at one of the bars in this area, rest your tired feet back at home. We love the bold green colours and funky design – picture cowhide rugs, vibrant pop art and leafy wallpaper in the bedroom. The bathroom is also one of our favourites – it has a huge walk-in rain shower that's the perfect way to relax after a busy day. And this pad has more than enough room for two, so there's plenty of space to make yourself at home. In the evenings, pour yourself an aperitif and rustle up a feast in the contemporary kitchen, then end the night with Netflix in bed, nodding off while to the sound of your favourite shows.

The Duchess is a comfortable place with lots going for it, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t start with that view. A city like Rome is full of views, but even so, this one is special, and the terrace itself is beautiful, with the furniture, the awning and the flowers all around (in summer, at least). This, along with the various antiques inside, makes you feel as if you’re in a Rome that existed 200 years ago, one that’s since been lost.

Where do we start with this fantastic apartment? Firstly, there’s a great private roof terrace with 360-degree views of Rome. Adjacent to the terrace, there's a study area, perfect for when you need to work while away. Another highlight is the stylish living space with its designer furnishings. We love that both bathrooms here are en-suite too. The location needs to be mentioned as well – this place is just a short stroll from the Spanish Steps. Within walking distance, you’ll also find the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi and much more.

This spacious apartment provides ample space for groups of friends or family to unwind after a long day of sightseeing. You're just a short walk away from the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain, but the crowds will feel miles away from this fourth-floor home. The lack of character is offset by thoughtful amenities – with a coffee maker, washing machine, and ample bedroom storage space, it's easy to settle in. You might dine at home in the evening with the windows open, admiring pretty rooftop views of the local neighbourhood, or step out and experience local Roman cooking. The bright, vibrant hues are the first things that strike you about this funky apartment. There’s a cohesion between the colourful design of the different rooms, yet at the same time, each maintains its own character. Through to the living room, where abstract artwork adorns the striking red wall and eclectic objects fill whitewashed bookshelves. While the statement art pieces and bright decor add interest, they're not the only things we love about this home. In fact, the light-filled kitchen with elegant ghost chairs is the perfect spot for starting the day with a continental breakfast. We also really like the marble floors throughout the apartment, and the granite kitchen backsplash – in fact, in most parts of the flat – the attention to detail is praiseworthy. Step outside of the building, to find yourself in the cultural heart of the world's most ancient city. Positioned between the Villa Medici and Trevi Fountain, whichever way you turn, you'll be within a short stroll from a beloved Roman attraction. Descend the Spanish Steps to the Piazza di Spagna, filled with traditional eateries, shops and gelato stalls, only a two-minute walk from this punchy home.

Simply put, Paparazzi is stylish, well-kept and right in the middle of Rome. Domenico is incredibly attentive as a host, and always ready to help, and while there are a few issues that we found, the majority were unavoidable given the age and positioning of the building (fairly slow wi-fi, for example), and the positives far outweigh the negatives. The apartment has been redone recently and you can really tell, particularly in the bathrooms, which feel very modern and sleek.

It’s centrally located between major sights including the Trevi Fountain and the Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore, with a Metro station just four minutes away – you can easily explore the city. The apartment is quiet and comfortable, an elegant escape in a bustling capital city. We love the classic architectural elements, including stunning frescoed ceilings, juxtaposed with bold splashes of colour and modern art.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better location than this. Set just moments from the Tiber and a short stroll to Rome’s most iconic sights, this apartment makes sightseeing feel effortless. Inside, space is a little tight – as is often the case in this part of town – but large windows in the living area bring in plenty of light. With herringbone floors, stylish furnishings and a smart layout that maximises every inch, it’s perfectly suited for two.

Just around the corner from the Spanish Steps, this plush little apartment is the perfect getaway to Rome. Walk just two minutes and you’re on Via Condotti, with its famed luxury shops and boutiques, running all the way to the Piazza di Spagna. You’re also within easy walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and buzzing Piazza Navona. 

Apart from its super central location, this apartment has lots going for it. Natural light fills the living room from traditional old windows. From here, you can watch the world go by on your classically Roman street. Herringbone floors and high ceilings keep things feeling grand, and the palette of greys and teals makes for a soothing spot to return to after a day in the city. We love the enclosed balcony, where a dining area is surrounded on all sides by glass – the perfect sunny breakfast spot. There’s also a tiny terrace that catches rays of sunshine in the middle of the day, painted sunshine-yellow and set up with a bistro table.

Housed in a handsome palazzo befitting of any gladiator, from the outside, this place is straight out of ancient Roman times. But inside, this apartment is as cool and contemporary as it gets – with slick monochrome finishes and luxurious detailing that Italians do so well.

Linger over freshly brewed coffees in the boutique-style bedroom or get together for a lazy breakfast in the dining area – wherever you choose, those views of the world’s most iconic amphitheatre will be right there. Right around the corner from the Piazza del Popolo (and the magical views from the Terrazza del Pincio), just an eighteen-minute stroll to the angelic Trevi Fountain and an even easier ten-minute walk to the historic Spanish Steps – this place has convenience and ease written into its rustic wooden doors. Tastefully renovated and furnished, but without losing any of the charm of the structure, the interior is a picture of old and new. It's not often we mention our admiration for scruff marks, but the knocks on the wooden fittings nod to the history of the flat, and by extension, the city, so we really love them. Plenty of modern comforts have been added to offer everything you need for an effortless stay, from rainfall showers to cafetieres, it's all there. And when you're in search of a calming spot to delve into a good book, the third and fourth bedrooms benefitting from soft floral sofas, ornamental lanterns and plenty of natural light pouring in, simply call out for your attention.

A compact yet charming apartment, and right in the middle of Campo Marzio, Purple Grapes offers a lovely little retreat with a fantastic location. Although not really suitable for people with mobility issues due to the lack of lift, it would be great for couples or small families who want to be in the thick of the action. The large bedroom where antiques and modern furnishings meet will certainly prove dream-inducing, while the beautiful fresco on the ceiling is really the icing on the cake.

With heaps of Italian soul and rustic charm, this quiet, well-kept and beautifully appointed apartment offers everything needed for that dolce vita. For the location, you're surrounded by local authenticity and just a seven-minute walk to the emblematic Colosseum. Find an assortment of eateries, wine bars and classy cafés to enjoy an alfresco lunch in the sun, before working off any over-indulgences with a gentle fourteen-minute stroll to Trevi Fountain – pennies at the ready. We also have to mention the apartment being on the cusp of Monti and Campitelli – both are full of beautiful piazzas, windy backstreets and family-run trattorias. Back home, we think there's somewhat of a contemporary Scandi feel, with plain bedspreads, pared-back furnishings and white shelved walls. Modern and minimalist, you'll also notice the elegant marble floors, quirky wallpaper prints and low-hanging light bulbs that we really loved.

Since 1869, the Campo de' Fiori has been a hub of market trading for fresh fruit, vegetables, and flowers. And by evening, this charming square becomes a hub of alfresco dining spots and wine bars. With that in mind, this studio apartment is pretty convenient, at less than a minute away. But if you want to keep busy rather than relaxing with a glass of chianti, you’ll find palaces, museums, and statues all around – such as the Museo di Scultura Antica Giovanni Barracco, two minutes away. However, we feel that this home is somewhat of a landmark itself. As you step inside, you can help but be taken aback by the striking timber ceiling. These thick, rustic beams ooze old-world Italy, transporting you back in time. But with modern twists from minimalist furniture and quirky artworks, there’s an elegant clash of eras which makes this studio feel unique. We love the luxe touches like the marble kitchen sink and bathroom, although your host can provide an even better VIP experience. After being picked up by your private driver from the airport, you might fancy taking up their offer of a wine tasting tour or ride on a classic Vespa.

It’s quite difficult to turn any corner in central Rome without running into a wonderfully historical landmark, ornate statue, or striking architecture. And the location of this fabulous apartment is no exception. Just six minutes from the Spanish Steps, five from Villa Borghese, and only two from the Piazza del Popolo, you’ll have no trouble seeing the sights. But the traditional Italian sights continue inside. Your bright living space features large French windows which illuminate rich, hardwood floors, chunky timber ceilings, and some captivating artworks. You’ll love relaxing on the plush sofa with a glass of primitivo in hand as the cherubs look upon you from the walls. Antique-style furniture and an ornate mirror complete this old-world Italian look, which continues through to the bedroom. We love the full wood-panelled wall, where the door to the ensuite is almost camouflaged within this rich wooden feature. After you’ve explored every inch of the apartment, your host has even more surprises. They can arrange for a tour around the city on a classic Vespa, or a wine tasting tour if you’re not quite ready to handle Rome’s traffic.
