Step into the Art Nouveau sunroom of this period apartment and just soak up its vintage style and warm character. Despite its position in an old, atmospheric square near Campo de’ Fiori, Falconry has been renovated recently, and most of the furniture has been made to measure, making the whole place feel very well crafted. Everything fits together, from the parquet floor to the various lamps, and even the terrace is taken care of, and not an afterthought. High up among the rooftops, it feels like a little refuge from the hectic city below.

This beautiful penthouse apartment is just the ticket for those looking for a relaxing stay away from the tourist crowds. Located in Rome’s Sallustiano neighbourhood, you’re far enough away from the city’s heavily crowded areas while still being able to reach all the main sights on foot or by public transport. Inside, a neutral palette sets a calming scene with wood floors and pops of blue in the pared-back decor. You’ll immediately be struck by the dazzling amount of natural light in the living area, thanks to the large glass doors that open up onto the first of two terraces. Finding a street close to it all but not inundated with tourists is the holy grail in Rome – and that's precisely where you'll find this apartment. We call it the Goldilocks zone. But, ever the professional, your host Michele hasn’t used that as an excuse to rest on his laurels. The flat itself is in perfect condition, and while it doesn’t have the feeling of a family home, that’s often a good thing when it's not a sprawling home with space for all the host's personal items. The two bedrooms are on opposite sides of the flat, which is perfect for groups of friends travelling together, though families might want little ones closer by, or not. We understand. Sandwiched between the river and lively Campo de' Fiori, you're in a prime location to explore the city. The square is home to the city's most vibrant (and occasionally overpriced) street market (Monday-Saturday mornings). Still, this famous foodie haven is a good place to stock up on fresh produce, just a five-minute walk from your apartment. Cross over the stone footbridge, Ponte Sisto, and within a couple of minutes, you'll be immersed in trendy Trastevere. With its cobbled streets lined with charmingly faded facades, innovative trattorias, and craft cocktail bars, there's plenty to keep you occupied well into the night.

For the location, you're surrounded by local authenticity and just a seven-minute walk to the emblematic Colosseum. Find an assortment of eateries, wine bars and classy cafés to enjoy an alfresco lunch in the sun, before working off any over-indulgences with a gentle fourteen-minute stroll to Trevi Fountain – pennies at the ready. We also have to mention the apartment being on the cusp of Monti and Campitelli – both are full of beautiful piazzas, windy backstreets and family-run trattorias. Back home, we think there's somewhat of a contemporary Scandi feel, with plain bedspreads, pared-back furnishings and white shelved walls. Modern and minimalist, you'll also notice the elegant marble floors, quirky wallpaper prints and low-hanging light bulbs that we really loved.

This home has a fantastic location in upscale Prati – it's just over a ten-minute walk to the Vatican Museums, while the high-end boutiques in Via Cola di Rienzo are a twenty-minute stroll away. You'll also find an array of bars and gourmet restaurants on your doorstep. Trionfale Market, on the other hand, with its food and flower stalls, is just over a five-minute saunter. So, take some fresh produce back to this home and whip up a Roman-style feast to enjoy in the elegant dining area. Later, entertain your guests at the piano here, or relax with a glass of prosecco. In the morning, fling open the French doors in the bedroom, then enjoy a hearty breakfast before starting another exciting day exploring all the Eternal City's wonderful sights.

At this Prati penthouse, exploring Rome is a breeze. The Vatican Museums are 700 metres away, St. Peter's Basilica is a fifteen-minute stroll, and the nearest metro station is five minutes on foot. You'll find plenty of wine bars and trendy eateries nearby, too. Back home, the contemporary living area has a double sofa bed for two. A well-appointed kitchen is ideal for rustling up breakfast before heading out. Though the second bedroom and both showers are a little snug, we think the location more than makes up for it.

You'll find this modern apartment just a short walk from the Spanish Steps. As far as sightseeing goes, this is the place to be – pretty much all of Rome is within easy reach, whether exploring on foot or hopping on public transit. Back home, the two bedrooms offer luxe en-suites – one with a freestanding bath, the other with a roomy light-up shower. The kitchen lacks a few essentials, but space-wise, it's big enough to rustle up a meal or two. But, seeing as you're in the birthplace of pasta, we suggest sampling the delicious cuisine in the nearby restaurants instead of cooking.

The Modern Roman

Deep within the narrow, medieval streets of Rome, this period building hides a surprisingly modern apartment for up to five guests. It's not a huge space but it's been cleverly configured to make the most of what it has – and to make it feel comfortable and high-end at the same time. Decorated in on-trend whites, creams and greys, it's bright and fresh. The kitchenette is stowed away in a cupboard-like space in the living room and while it's perfect for the basics, it's not going to appeal to keen home cooks – but this is Rome, and some of the best restaurants, cafes and bars in the world are right on your doorstep. Our favourite feature of this home is the view onto the charming Piazza dei Satiri outside. And while we're talking location, the famous Campo de’ Fiori market is just around the corner.

Those visiting Rome for the ancient marvels and historic sights won't find a location much better than this. It’s 100 metres from the Colosseum and the ruin-filled park of Colle Opio is your next-door neighbour. Wandering the surrounding streets it seems like every corner is home to an ancient church between family-run trattoria and gelaterias. The apartment is housed in a beautiful 18th-century building, and stepping inside you feel the opulence of an old-world parlour. Velvet seats at the bistro table, a velvet sofa piled high with cushions and suspended candelabra create the opulence, while the exposed stone and timber beams keep one foot firmly in the building’s history. Chess can provide the evening’s entertainment, which feels fitting amidst the gilded mirrors and oil paintings. Heading up the striking mesh-metal staircase, the master bedroom has a pretty arched window with a window seat providing the perfect spot for a bit of holiday reading.

Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight (and ten, at a stretch) in the Jewish Quarter isn’t as straightforward as you might think. Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight and has a view as good as Teatro’s is even harder. It looks down onto the Largo di Torre Argentina, which holds the ruins of four temples and Pompey’s Theatre. It’s a fantastic spot, and Teatro makes the most of it, with a simple design intended to not interfere.

There’s an air of graceful elegance to this home located in Rome’s Valle Aurelia neighbourhood, directly behind the Vatican. Bright and welcoming, you’ll immediately be drawn to the main open-plan living area where large glass doors lead out onto a private balcony. With two comfortable bedrooms – one of which has a vanity desk should you need to catch up on work – you’ve got everything you need for a relaxing, care-free stay. Outside of your home, Vatican City with its famous Saint Peter's Basilica is a thirty-minute walk away, Monte Ciocci Park is a thirteen-minute stroll and thanks to the metro station that’s a four-minute walk away, you can be in Rome’s historic centre in less than thirty minutes.

This stylish apartment is right around the corner from Termini, Rome's biggest train station, so there's no doubt that the transport links are excellent. But many of the must-see sights can also be reached on foot, including the magnificent Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore five minutes away and The Colosseum just a little further, about a twenty-minute stroll. After fueling up on pasta and gelato at Mercato Centrale Roma across the street, set off for the Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon and The Spanish Steps, all reachable in under half an hour. When you're not off exploring, shopping or sipping Italian wine at one of the bars in this area, rest your tired feet back at home. We love the bold green colours and funky design – picture cowhide rugs, vibrant pop art and leafy wallpaper in the bedroom. The bathroom is also one of our favourites – it has a huge walk-in rain shower that's the perfect way to relax after a busy day. And this pad has more than enough room for two, so there's plenty of space to make yourself at home. In the evenings, pour yourself an aperitif and rustle up a feast in the contemporary kitchen, then end the night with Netflix in bed, nodding off while to the sound of your favourite shows.

In the region of Borgo Vittorio, this apartment sets you up perfectly for a sightseeing trip. St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums are a five-minute walk away, while the Ottaviano Metro stop is ten minutes away on foot. You'll also have Rome's prime points of interest, restaurants, bars and cafes within easy reach – this is the place to be. The apartment offers two well-sized bedrooms, both equipped with a bathroom each for added comfort. Just note that you'll need to climb a flight of stairs to reach the entrance of the apartment. But overall, it's a great base for families or two couples in search of a central home-from-home.

Finding a high-style penthouse apartment this close to the Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica is one thing. But to bag yourself a place with an all-too-rare rooftop terrace to boot? Now you're onto a winner.

Inside, this luxurious bolthole hides a few surprises too. Alongside sleek architectural treasures (would you look at those marble-clad walls), you'll also discover some showstopping frescos nodding to the Renaissance era. While a chromotherapy hot tub bath and sauna shower are firmly planted in the 21st century. 

Start your morning on the sunny veranda with freshly brewed coffees and the papers, then hop in the hot tub to kick start your day. Once you're spick and span and ready to hit Rome's streets, blaze a trail to the Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica, just a three-kilometre walk away, or just a smidge further, the mighty Colosseum. Or, for a more authentic taste of Roman city life, keep things local in the Aurelio neighborhood with an amble through Rome's largest park, Villa Doria Pamphili (just 900 metres away) – a local's favourite place to escape the city noise and bustle. Tucked between Piazza di Spagna and the Villa Borghese, you couldn't ask for a better spot to base yourself during your Roman holiday. The cobbled street outside is utterly charming, and even with the crowds milling about a few hundred metres away, it's quite peaceful. The sprawling Villa Borghese is just five minutes away – it's an absolute must-visit, home to lush greenery, city views and beautiful sculptures, plus it's where you'll find the Gigi Proietti Globe Theatre and Museo Pietro Canonica. You're also not far from other tourist attractions – the Spanish Steps are a ten-minute walk, while the Pantheon is reachable in twenty. Inside, the apartment is bright and roomy, with a sleek kitchen and two cosy sofas that you'll want to sink into after a busy. We particularly liked the beautiful artwork of local sights that adorn the walls, and there's even a delicious restaurant downstairs when you don't feel like cooking. End your evenings on the private terrace – just pour yourself a glass of wine and relax as the sun goes down, basking in the magic of Rome.

You'll be impressed with the views of the Santa Barbara dei Librari seen from the windows of this newly renovated apartment. But you'll love this home's location even more. Set in the heart of the historic district, overlooking the atmospheric square Largo dei library, all the must-see sights are walkable from here.

Get off to a flying start with a hefty dose of Roman life around the corner at Campo de Fiori (a three-minute walk) –⁠ by day, the piazza hosts one of the city's best-known markets, and by night, its bars and restaurants keep the night flowing. Or do like the locals with early-evening passeggiatas along the postcard-pretty River Tiber, it's just a four-minute walk from your door.

Back at home, this modern apartment housed in an ancient Roman villa of mighty proportions makes quite the first impression with its floor-to-ceiling windows flooding the space with natural daylight and revealing charming scenes of the pretty piazza below.

The designers have cleverly used the height of those lofty, exposed beam ceilings to create a nifty mezzanine level that houses the second bedroom. Meanwhile, strategically-placed house plants and contemporary artwork warm the loft-style space. When thoughts turn to food, you can easily rustle up a  bite to eat in the smart kitchen area. Though with so many trattorias waiting right outside your door, we wouldn't blame you if you ate out every day instead.

This apartment may be in the heart of Rome, but there’s something distinctly country-chic about the decor. Period pieces – dressers, doors and the kitchen table – are all rough white-washed and feel rustic. The sound system is vintage, and the armchairs in the living room are upholstered in gloriously kitsch floral patterns. The jewel in the crown of the apartment is the sprawling outdoor terrace, which has sofas in sunny spots for a dose of vitamin D, and shaded nooks under parasols for when the heat gets too much. The bamboo pergola covered a couple of outdoor gas hobs, so you can cook and dine alfresco. Flowers and pot plants bloom for every corner and climb trellises for a bit of privacy. If you want to know just how central you are, just head out to the downstairs balcony and spot the Colosseum at the end of your street.  

Two Wheels

Once owned by famous painter Albert Jill, this apartment lies in the heart of Rome. The decor is a bit dated and children and toddlers aren't permitted, but we think friends or families with older children will settle right in. The wi-fi isn't the strongest in all rooms so it's perhaps not the best for remote working, but Jill's unique art adorns the walls and the location is wonderful. You'll be on a quiet cobblestone street, but you may still hear some non-disruptive outside noise from the city. Within walking distance, you'll find an array of shops, restaurants, and attractions like the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain, with public transport nearby for getting around.

Artist's Haven

It’s quite difficult to turn any corner in central Rome without running into a wonderfully historical landmark, ornate statue, or striking architecture. And the location of this fabulous apartment is no exception. Just six minutes from the Spanish Steps, five from Villa Borghese, and only two from the Piazza del Popolo, you’ll have no trouble seeing the sights. But the traditional Italian sights continue inside. Your bright living space features large French windows which illuminate rich, hardwood floors, chunky timber ceilings, and some captivating artworks. You’ll love relaxing on the plush sofa with a glass of primitivo in hand as the cherubs look upon you from the walls. Antique-style furniture and an ornate mirror complete this old-world Italian look, which continues through to the bedroom. We love the full wood-panelled wall, where the door to the ensuite is almost camouflaged within this rich wooden feature. After you’ve explored every inch of the apartment, your host has even more surprises. They can arrange for a tour around the city on a classic Vespa, or a wine tasting tour if you’re not quite ready to handle Rome’s traffic.

Il Cherubino

Sitting on the right-hand side of the Tiber, the neighbourhood of Trastevere is an inimitable mix of history and character, much like this apartment. The building in which it sits dates back to the 14th century, although you wouldn't be able to guess that age from the fresh design of the interior.

In the main living space, a colour palette of neutrals makes the room feel bright and inviting, while there are brighter tones in the bedrooms that lend a sense of personality. When it comes to dinners, guests are treated to two kitchen spaces — a wooden-panelled room that doubles up as a dining area and an adjoining room with an induction cooker.

If rather than cooking, however, you fancy familiarising yourself with Roman cuisine, there's a huge choice of restaurants in the surrounding area. The city's famous attractions are not too far away, either — the Pantheon takes just over a quarter of an hour on foot to reach, while the Colosseum takes about double that.

While this two-bedroom Rome apartment isn't the most stylish in our collection, its enviable location is what makes it stand out. If you're here to explore, you'll find plenty of galleries and museums nearby. Back at home, one bedroom offers courtyard views, while the other lets you peer through trees at the River Tiber. The kitchen, while looking in need of an update, is well-equipped – though we think you'll be taking advantage of stylish Regola's eateries more often than not.

Known as one of the most picturesque neighbourhoods in Rome, Trastevere is overflowing with trendy bars, mouth-watering restaurants,  and artisan shops. Vibrant, bohemian and steeped in authenticity, this is the place to be if you want to live like a local, and it's where you'll find this studio apartment. It's about a twenty-minute walk to the Pantheon, and though other landmarks like the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum are around a half-an-hour away, this excellent location is well worth it. Spend afternoons roaming the pretty-as-a-postcard alleyways and people-watching in the piazzas, then grab an alfresco aperitif in the evenings at one of the world-class trattorias. After a busy day, come home to this snug apartment and relax in style. It has plenty of details that set it apart from the crowd, from the bold wallpaper to the ceramic leopard that greets you as you enter. The wooden beams and large windows hark back to Trastevere's history, and though it may be small, it feels like a cosy home-from-home, perfect for a couple wanting a romantic getaway in the heart of Rome.
