This former fisherman's cottage, situated right by the rocky shoreline and overlooking water in the picturesque village of Santa Tecla, has been lovingly renovated by your hosts to create an alluring home that caters to all your needs.

Unique, original features have been carefully preserved, maintaining the home's charm, while comfortable contemporary furnishings have been added alongside carefully chosen antique pieces to create a characterful space that's a real pleasure to spend time in.

An open-plan layout on the ground floor allows plenty of light in through double doors that lead out into a private garden at the rear. In addition to an outdoor dining space, there's an inviting Jacuzzi tub bubbling away, plus steps leading down to the rocky shoreline and direct access from the rocks for swimming in the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea.

This coastal cottage is well placed for access to a small selection of restaurants, pizzerias and a conveniently located mini market, while there's a weekly Saturday market a kilometre away in Acireale for stocking up on local produce. From here, you can head an hour or so further inland to explore Etna Park, home to the island's iconic volcano, or drive forty minutes north along the coast to the ever-popular and picturesque city of Taormina.

One of our favourite spots in this home is the wonderful bedroom that is encompassed by floor-to-ceiling windows that light up the space whilst giving you a peek into nature – we recommend relaxing in bed as the day draws in, with the amber glow streaming into the bedroom. The second bedroom in the loft has a TV, making it easier than ever to snuggle up in bed while you watch a movie with some tasty snacks. 

Cook up a storm in the sleek kitchen and tuck into a variety of homemade meals alfresco style on the patio, followed by a snooze in the tree hammock as the children enjoy themselves on the garden playground. Dip your toes into the refreshing water of your very own pool whilst you admire the view of the sea and the relaxing sound of the waves. To the right of the pool, you'll notice a rocky beach, giving you a sense of rurality as you soak up the rays.

A short drive takes you to the city centre of Acireale, a delightful coastal destination that is located at the foot of Mount Etna. This is the holiday villa of your dreams. Located on the waterfront in Sicily, the only thing between you and the Mediterranean Sea is your private staircase over the lava rocks. If you prefer, you can slip into your private swimming pool above the waves. In such a dramatic and photogenic setting, everything about this home is orientated to the sea. This exquisite villa can be found on the slopes of Mount Etna, just outside of Santa Venerina. It makes for an excellent base for exploring Etna’s villages, restaurants and wine cellars, and is just a thirty-minute drive from both Acireale and Giarre. The sights of Taormina are just 30 kilometres away, too. 

That said, you may find that once you arrive at this breath-taking home, you never want to leave. In a lush setting of gardens, palm trees and potted plants, this home is a delight to behold after a day of travel. Kick off your shoes and head straight to the upper terrace for a glass of Prosecco. From there, you can take in the sweeping views out to sea. Perhaps you’ll go for a dip in the private outdoor swimming pool, and stretch out beside it to dry off in the sun. Alternatively, you could make your way to the ground-floor wellness centre, where you can soak in a Jacuzzi and unwind in the sauna or indoor pool. Book a massage to really indulge.

There is space to eat inside, but we think you'll want to head out to the patio, where you can dine alfresco and admire the views over a glass of prosecco. The home also has direct access to the water – there's an outcrop of lava rock that allows you to take a dip in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Catania, the ancient port city, is roughly a forty-minute drive away, making it an excellent day trip destination. And, if you're feeling adventurous, you can explore Parco dell'Etna National Park, and take in the views of the famous volcano.

Just a forty-minute drive from the vibrant city of Catania, the easy-going lifestyle in the village of Stazzo offers a relaxing stay in Sicily. While the glorious, blue Ionian Sea laps the shore at the local marina, a five-minute stroll (passing waterside restaurants and diving centres) will take you home to a similarly coastal abode.

This modern, mid-century villa has quite a striking appearance. But surrounded by lush foliage and palm trees, it’s almost hidden from sight. Its gently undulating, curved roofs mirror the shape of the calm waves of the neighbouring sea. And to add to this theme, a glistening infinity pool sits in the garden. While you might spend a lot of time on the pool terrace, sipping chilled prosecco and listening to the waves, the kids can keep entertained in the playground. The style of each apartment varies, with some much more modern than others, but we think the waterfront setting and flexible sleeping arrangements make it a great option for groups of family or friends.

On the Cyclops Riviera, this modern home calls families of four to relax, steps away from a rocky inlet. We love how the main bedroom soaks up the scenery through a glass wall, inviting you onto the private terrace with sea views. Though the second built-in bed may be hard to access for some, it's a cosy nook for kids. Strong wi-fi isn't guaranteed, but the communal garden and seasonal pool offer tech-free highlights. And exciting excursions are at hand, including trips to nearby Acireale and Catania.

The King of Sky

This sunny villa lies on the Ionian coast of Sicily, with a large garden and a private pool that's open in the summer. Spread over three levels, you'll need to climb stairs to reach the entrance, and the lower floor is its own apartment with a kitchenette and living space, ideal for a couple wanting extra privacy. Relax and recharge at this breathtakingly beautiful villa situated in a secluded spot on the lower slopes of Mount Etna. Its location makes it the ideal starting point for exploring the stunning volcanic landscapes, diverse wildlife and fascinating history of the area. 

Inside, the villa offers a perfectly blended mix of traditional features and modern design. Think contemporary furnishings sitting beneath soaring vaulted ceilings and a glass and steel gym that leads out to charming terracotta-tiled terraces overlooking the immaculate gardens. We can think of little better than whiling away away your days stretched out under cloudless skies, interrupting your relaxation only for cooling dips in the private pool, games of table football and ping pong, and light lunches in the shade of the covered terrace.

If you can tear yourself away, the centre of Catania is 16.5km away. Its Palazzo della Cultura regularly hosts fascinating exhibitions by internationally renowned artists. As unconventional as it sounds, there's a row of coffin showrooms in Via Castello Ursino that's worth walking down en route to dinner and drinks by the castle walls. It'll certainly make for a talking point with friends when you head home.

For a more romantic aesthetic, Syracuse lies an hour south. Known for its fascinating ancient Greek and Roman history and the lovely island of Ortigia, it also offers its fair share of bustling bars and a thriving culinary scene.

Three Wishes for Cinderella

This apartment on the eastern edge of Sicily between Riposto and Acireale is a real feast for the eyes. Not only is the building in which it sits painted a vivid shade of pink that's instantly mood-lifting, but it also faces a gorgeous view of the Ionian Sea in one direction and Mount Etna the other way.

You can admire this panorama from the two terraces surrounded by verdant Mediterranean vegetation and palm trees, or out through the wooden windows. Although the interior can't hope to compete with these surroundings, the mix of rustic features and colourful flourishes are pleasing to be among. The patterned tiling in the kitchen and bathrooms is pretty, while the wooden furnishings and terracotta tilings add a real sense of homeliness.

As you can see from gazing out over the terrace, there's a pebbly beach that's easily reached from the home, but the nearest sandy spot is in Riposto six minutes' drive up the coastline. The port city of Catania is only thirty-five minutes away in the car too when you fancy a wander around the grand architecture and a meal in one of its seafood restaurants.
