We love the blend of old meets new that gives this home such a singular feel. Many of the home’s original features remain, with high ceilings, decorative mouldings and colourful tiles sitting alongside bespoke contemporary details, like designer lighting, polished concrete accents and handcrafted furniture. There’s an abundance of natural light here too thanks to the French doors, allowing the sunlight to cast its glow across the interiors’ greys, pinks, reds and blues that recall the lively hues of the market just outside.

This apartment can be found in the popular seaside resort of Letojanni in Sicily. It’s just a few kilometres from Taormina, so there’s plenty to see and do. We recommend visiting Isola Bella in particular. The apartment looks out over the sea and has a small terrace where you can enjoy the sunshine. Even when you’re inside, the sea views are the focal point thanks to huge windows. The decor inside is chic with a playful side, with charming trinkets dotted around. We think this home is perfect for a couple, a small family, or a trio of friends.

Perched at the base of Mount Etna, two kilometres from the mountain town of Milo, this villa embraces old-world Sicily. It’s an easy drive to the buzzing old port city of Catania too. The freshest seafood is landed in Catania every day, and the lively central market is surrounded by seafood joints. The volcanic hills surrounding this villa are home to vineyards creating ancient wines.

Once you’ve got your fresh catch of the day and bottle of local white, head back to the villa to cook at the brick-built kitchen outdoors and serve at one of the myriad terraces or patios with dining tables and lounges. This is what la dolce vita is all about. Within the rest of the 21,000 square metres of Mediterranean gardens, you’ll find sculptures and artworks in homage to Sicily’s ancient history. There are woodlands filled with oak, chestnut and cherry trees and a sparkling swimming pool for a cooling dip.

The main house is a converted olive oil mill and was once home to a famous Italian singer. Indeed, the main sitting room and kitchen feel warehouse-big with a high, wooden ceiling and arched, art deco windows opening up to the patio. You can tell a creative used to live here as the walls are adorned with unique works of art and an upright piano stands pride of place. The second lounge is set around an old fireplace and embraced the old world with its oil paintings and dark wood antiques. When it comes to bedtime, there’s a separate guest house for two, out in the woodlands for those that like their privacy. The main bedroom is like a suite with its own seating area and private terrace.

On its perch in the hillsides of Mount Etna fringing the bucolic town of Randazzo, you’ll find this elegant manor house bringing all the old Sicilian vibes you’re chasing.

Climb the showstopping steps to the entrance and step inside this carefully restored home. A glorious mish-mash of old and new, original ceramic floor tiles and lofty beams remain to tell of its historical past. While sleek, marble-clad bathrooms and a made-for-action kitchen are firmly in the 21st Century. 

Groups of friends or extended family will love the separate annex housing a sitting room, kitchen, and two bedrooms for that added sense of space. But it’s the gardens outside impressing us the most. With large terraces hugged by citrus groves, tiers of dry-stone walls, and Sicilian hills beyond, the views out here look good from every angle. Spend lazy, hazy days hopping between the heated pool and tasteful sun loungers. Get together for Mediterranean alfresco feasts under the shady veranda. And then slope away to that outdoor antique daybed – it’s got siestas written all over it.

When it’s time to dip your toes into the local culture, the nearby medieval town of Randazzo (a five-kilometre drive) is an afternoon well spent. For something a little more glitzy, mingle with the high-rollers down at the chic resort town of Taormina (40-kilometre drive). Or pack up a picnic and head for the silky sands of Giardini Naxos – the scenic 30-kilometre journey is worth the drive alone.
