Modica itself is a Unesco town with years of history to explore. Wander its wonderful streets and make sure to indulge in lots of chocolate here – the town has a 400-year tradition of Sicilian chocolate making. We recommend checking out the centrepiece of the town, the Duomo di San Giorgio, which is one of the most spectacular sights of Baroque architecture in Sicily. But if days walking around is too much, then why not spend a day at one of the fine beaches in this area? Sampieri is one of the most famous and it's only a twenty-eight-minute drive. No matter what you choose to do during the day, we guarantee you'll end up spending your evenings on this home's balcony watching the lights of Modica twinkle at night while sipping on a glass of something tasty. High ceilings and stark white walls lend an immediate sense of brightness, while the sleek kitchen lies on the modern side of things. There are a few nods to heritage, though – the wooden ceiling beams and ceramic collections. To top it all off, guests are treated to a private terrace on which to lounge, dine or simply gaze out at the surrounding countryside. 

As you'll quickly find out for yourself, the home's immediate surroundings – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, no less – are peaceful, but you don't have to venture far to find a bit of life. The nearest town is the Baroque beauty of Ragusa about 10km away, which has shops, restaurants and a weekly market with which to get acquainted. We don’t think there’s a better way to experience the ancient feel of Modica than with a stay at a historic stone home dating back to the 1500s. Inside, the rooms are simple, minimal and family-friendly with children’s amenities available on request. It’s worth noting most of the rooms are accessed from the outside. When you've had enough of topping up your tan for the day, why not drive the 16km to the historic city of Syracuse, known for its ancient ruins and the lovely island of Ortigia. In addition to the history, you'll uncover a spectacular selection of lively bars, traditional restaurants and plenty of shops to pick up a holiday memento or two.

An hour or so south, the charming Baroque towns of Noto, Modica and Ragusa make for fascinating day trips. In addition, we'd recommend stepping back in time on a visit to the former fishing village of Marzamemi on Sicily's southern tip.

You’ll have plenty of peace and privacy here: the house is surrounded by 4000m2 of manicured gardens, which lead down to a large outdoor pool and plenty of deck chairs for relaxing in after a refreshing dip. Fire up the audio system while you make drinks and snacks in the outdoor kitchen, or throw some meats on the barbecue for an alfresco lunch. 

The rooms inside are characterised by high ceilings and dark wooden beams that contrast with the whitewashed walls. Sleek, minimalist furniture is compounded by statement pieces: we love the sunken living area with the towering ultramarine ornamental fireplace. The villa is just 50 metres from the sea, and there are beautiful sandy beaches within easy reach. 

From the villa you are well placed to explore Sicily’s delights: the baroque town of Noto and Syracuse are both a twenty-five minute drive away, while the hamlet of Fontane Bianche is on your doorstep: home to beach bars, laidback restaurants and local shops.

Villa Oltremare

Set in a quiet spot on the east coast of Sicily, this unfussy villa is footsteps from the Plemmirio Marine Park, a ten-minute drive from Arenella Beach and no more than twenty minutes from the heart of Syracuse. If you’d prefer to stay put, we recommend spending the morning flitting between the pool and a lounger before sitting down to a traditional Sicilian lunch, rustled up in the fully equipped kitchen. Should you prefer to leave the cooking to the professionals, your host can arrange for a chef to take care of mealtimes.

Although the interior can't hope to compete with these surroundings, the mix of rustic features and colourful flourishes are pleasing to be among. The port city of Catania is only thirty-five minutes away in the car too when you fancy a wander around the grand architecture and a meal in one of its seafood restaurants.
