If you do want to catch a bit of the island’s buzz and stock up on supplies, the historic town of Castelvetrano is a short drive away. But this place is all about the tranquil life, floating in the huge, turquoise swimming pool or enjoying a long, lazy lounge thanks to the full outdoor kitchen. There are plenty of shaded spots with comfy seating dotted around the grounds. 

The villa is set out courtyard-style, all on one level (except for one little turret) with white buildings clustered around the pool terrace. Bedrooms, living rooms and dining areas have their own entrances onto the terrace. Inside, we love the old-world feel of the place with its sloped, wooden ceilings in the bedrooms and Persian rugs in the living room. Furniture feels like it belongs to a 19th-century aristocrat. There’s a big wood-burning stove in the dine-in kitchen, though we doubt you’ll need it in the heat of spring, autumn and summer. All in all, this place feels like you’ve got your own castle in the Sicilian countryside.

The large open decks of this home give sweeping views over Erice, Trapani and Marsala as you settle in for a glass of wine or an evening massage. We do love our lavish kitchens but with the option of barbecue under the stars, a poolside kitchen and a fitness area, we can't see a reason to stay indoors. Equipped with underfloor heating and a focal Al Fresco dining area surrounded by nature, there are plenty of spaces for heartfelt bonding. At a stone's throw from the beach, it's also a good idea to bike along the calm coastline.

Into the Horizon

With at least five wineries just a short drive away – the furthest being just shy of forty minutes – this home is well connected to the wine route and the accomplished cellars along it. With their doors open to the public, you can make a day of hopping from one to another as you sample the wares and choose your favourite to take home. That bottle of Marsala wine, coincidentally, will make the perfect accompaniment to the Mediterranean feast you’ll undoubtedly grill sometime during your stay. 

When you’re not among vineyards, you might escape to another natural wonder – the beach. Drive along the coast to find your favourite among a number of rocky and sandy beaches and once there, you can fully indulge yourself for the day. Swim until the tides and sunshine has left you feeling that particular brand of happy-tired, or catch up on your reading as you lie back under an umbrella and listen to the waves lapping upon the shore. 

Back home you’ll find all the comforts you expect from a holiday home and we encourage you to spend time outdoors under the shaded terrace. One of our favourite features is the cobbled floor of the dining space – the farmhouse style goes a long way in making this feel homely, which makes it the perfect room for tiramisu, copious amounts of coffee, and a board game or two. 

Now that you’re among some of the most charming towns found on this side of Sicily, you may as well visit the mediaeval town of Erice or the salt pans of Marsala.
