Peeping over the glittering blue sea towards the islands of Elba, Corsica and Capraia, this apricot-hued villa is all beamed ceilings, terracotta floors and sheer curtains that drift in the gentle breeze. Though the villa exudes traditional Tuscan charm, it’s brought up-to-the-minute with a flash chef’s kitchen and hydro massage tub – perfect for easing aching feet after long walks through the countryside. 

When it comes to picking a spot from which to soak up the sunshine, you’re utterly spoiled for choice. The home is surrounded by 10 hectares of land – think enchanting woodland, Mediterranean scrub, and ancient olive groves. Take your place with a double espresso by the pond or chill out on the terrace with a Campari and tonic at sundown. 

Spend long, hot afternoons swimming unhurried laps in the infinity pool, stopping now and again to refuel with delicious Italian fare in the rustic yet elegant dining space. If you’re keen to explore your surroundings, jump in the car and take the ten-minute drive to the seaside. Rimigliano Coastal Park was one of our favourite places to while away the hours.

This charming apartment is nestled in the picture-perfect village of Suvereto. Cute and cosy, it's ideal for couples looking for a romantic getaway, or a solo traveller who wants a tranquil base when exploring the wonders of Tuscany.

Step inside, and you'll find a gorgeous space that reflects its rustic location perfectly. There are plenty of traditional touches, from the exposed brick and wooden ceiling beams, to the distressed wood dining table. Pick up some local ingredients, and practice your Italian-style cooking in the kitchen – it's a homely space where you can whip up the perfect risotto. When you've finished eating and sipping some Pinot Grigio, you can get comfortable in the peaceful bedroom, for a restful night's sleep. 

Although petite, Suvereto is packed with cultural delights. Wander through the labyrinth of passageways dating back to the medieval era, and stop off in the family-run restaurants for delicious pasta and pizza. Don't miss the Aldobrandesca Fortress and the beautiful Romanesque church, both just a few minutes away from your front door. A twenty-minute drive will bring you to the Etruscan Coast, with its hidden coves and pinewood forests – so, whether you want to lie on a beach or take an invigorating hike through the woods, you'll be very happy here.

This Suvereto apartment may be small, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm. Walls of exposed stone, sumptuous antique beds and ceilings adorned with wooden beams paint the picture of a traditional Tuscan holiday. Yet, in spite of the compact size, the kitchen and bathroom are sleek, stylish and modern, just the ticket for two. The window seat is our favourite spot – in the mornings, there's nothing better than enjoying an espresso as the smell of fresh-baked bread rises from the bakery below.

One of Tuscany's hidden gems, Suvereto is rife with old-world character – picture medieval walls, cobblestone streets and sidewalk cafes overlooking ancient churches. We love the laid-back pace of life here, but with vineyards, hiking trails and beaches like Spiaggia di Rimigliano all a short drive away, you'll be well-placed for exploring, too.

Inside a turn-of-the-century castle among towering trees and olive groves, locations don't get much more romantic than this. There's no lift here, so you'll be climbing several flights of stairs, but we think it's a price worth paying – the private terrace lets you look out over the sea and local area. Being in a small town, you'll find a handful of eateries nearby, while the shared alfresco space is ideal for rustic feasts. There's no parking here, though your host can arrange airport transfers for an additional fee. If you are looking to explore, consider taking a ferry to nearby Elba.

The historic villages of Campiglia Marittima is just four minutes away by car, where you can wander through cobbled streets and visit family-run restaurants. If you fancy a day at the beach, you can drive to the sandy shoreline of Spiaggia di Rimigliano in just 20km away, and there are some stunning coastal walks nearby too.

Nestled in the picturesque Maremma countryside, this home boasts a huge garden with an infinity pool and hot tub, with glimpses of the Tuscan Archipelago visible from the barbecue area. Spread across several levels with lots of stairs throughout, guests with limited mobility will be better off staying elsewhere. One of the bedrooms is in the home's dependence, offering a little extra privacy. We think this is ideal for a couple or small family travelling with a larger group. You'll need a car for getting to Montioni Nature Park or the town of Suvereto, but there's more than enough parking space to go around.

The farm produces its own Tuscan olive oil and honey, and there is even a top rated restaurant where you can sample some of the farm’s produce. Days can be spent riding the horses from the stable, exploring the area by E-bike, or taking a cookery class at the restaurant, where you might learn how to make fresh pasta or cantuccini. On more relaxed afternoons, treat yourself to a spa or beauty treatment – there is nothing more serene than a massage in the garden, with a gentle breeze and a soundtrack of cicadas.

The outside space is lush and pretty. Roses and lavender have been planted alongside a wealth of trees, making the garden feel like an oasis. If you’re anything like us, you won’t be able to resist a dip in the hedge-lined swimming pool for long. In the evening, set up outside at the long dining table. You might like to arrange for a local chef to come and cook for you – that way you can enjoy a cocktail hour on the terrace before dining as the sun sets beyond the valley. 

The villa is only a short walk along the river to the centre of peaceful Poggibonsi, so you can easily dine out in the local restaurants or grab a gelato. Montemorli vineyard is just a twenty-minute walk up the hill, while the medieval beauty of San Gimignano is a mere twenty-one-minute drive away. Slightly further afield, you can be in Siena in thirty minutes, and Florence in an hour.

An open space in a sixteenth-century building, in the hilly outskirts of Florence that, at time at times, has been both a stables and a nightclub, Thermae is one of the most spectacular places we’ve seen in Italy. Its restoration has been a labour of love for the host, Giovanni, and the way that he’s incorporated technology into the original structure is simply impressive. There’s too much to describe here, but know that everything's been taken care of. And if we did have to choose one thing that stood out, it might have to be the pool, hidden away in the vaults, and only accessible through a trapdoor.

It may be less than a thirty-minute drive from the spectacular Renaissance city of Florence, but this home feels like another world. Located up in the hills, you'll discover a spectacular villa – complete with a clock tower – just outside the small village of Cellai, where time seems to stand still. 

Pad across terracotta-tiled floors, with wood beam ceilings above, and discover rooms filled with character and charm, where period features and modern touches sit effortlessly alongside one another. Nowhere is this better displayed than in the contemporary kitchen and adjoining dining room with its antique stove. Each of the four bedrooms blends rustic charm with supreme comfort, while the bathrooms are fitted out with beautiful tiles and gleaming marble for a touch of luxury.

Step outside and you'll discover a lush landscape of terraced gardens, an inviting pool and breathtaking views over the Tuscan terrain. Your hosts recommend making the trip to Forno La Chiocciola, where you can stock up on Florentine speciality flatbread, schiaccata, each morning. Afterwards, place yourself poolside and settle in for a day of sunbathing, interrupted only by refreshing dips in the water and trips to the kitchen to get some more of that delicious bread.

After a day of exploring, kick back on the sofa in your opulent living room, before retreating to the serene calm of the bedroom for a perfect night’s sleep. With its romantic setting and unbeatable location, this would be the perfect getaway for couples.

Down the hall, three sumptuous sleeping quarters promise restful slumbers and, through timber-framed windows, postcard-worthy views of your glorious surroundings.

Then, when you're not laying out on poolside loungers and sipping wine in the sun, the stunning Renaissance city of Florence is less than half an hour away. Why not get to know the artistic, architectural and cultural history of Tuscany, spending an afternoon or three wandering its streets and taking it all in.

Spend the day at Constanti winery – this is where your host works, so she will be more than happy to give you a tour of the place. Beautiful vineyards surround the loft and a wide range of wineries to sample some of the tastiest glasses of red.

Return home to sit at the dining table while the scent of a home-cooked Italian meal fills the room from the nearby kitchen. After you've eaten, pick a book off of the shelf, and snuggle up on the sofa while the moonlight shines through the windows. Pop the TV on for background noise or simply enjoy the peace and quiet that Montalcino brings.

With a spacious interior, plenty of period features and an inviting outdoor area – there's a lot to love about this recently renovated apartment, which is set within a traditional Tuscan farmhouse and purposely tucked out of the way in the gently rolling hills.

Thick stone walls, cool tiled floors, and exposed wooden ceilings lend this ground-floor residence a traditional vibe, while the gorgeous pool entices you to spend most of your days outside under the summer sun. In addition to the gorgeous shared spaces, the home also benefits from a private outdoor area where you're free to grill up gourmet offerings. Every meal here (except for breakfast... probably) will benefit from being accompanied by beautiful extra virgin olive oil and a mouthwatering medium-bodied chianti – all made by your host, Nicola.

Away from home, Montespertoli – one of Tuscany's renowned wine capitals – is just a five-minute drive, while the stunning Renaissance city of Florence is 35km away. No trip to Tuscany would be complete without at least one day spent exploring this bucket-list-topping destination.

Step inside, through any of several French doors lining the villa's facade, and you'll uncover a traditional Tuscan interior with rustic terracotta tiled floors, antique furniture and plenty of exposed wood. Elsewhere, each of the four individually decorated bedrooms boasts its own en-suite. 

There are several other properties and shared facilities on the farm, including a vast library with a wide selection of books and magazines, a theatre for hosting musical events, and a network of walkways crisscrossing the grounds that'll lead you on enchanting walks through mature forests, passing streams and waterfalls along the way. If that all sounds a bit sedate, your hosts will happily arrange white-knuckle mountain bike rides along trails in the nearby forests. 

Elsewhere, the area is dotted with charming small towns and hilltop hamlets that are a delight to explore. Further afield, but well within day-trip distance, the Renaissance cities of Florence and Arrezzo are well worth an afternoon's exploration.

You’ll also have access to a communal swimming pool with beautiful views across the neighbouring 18-hole golf course. You will need a car to get around here, but it’s just a short drive to the hilltop town of Massa Marittima where you can stroll ancient streets and soak up the magic of Tuscany.

The beaches of the Tyrrhenian coast, such as Giannella Beach, are also reachable in around half an hour by car.

By honouring the villa's history – and thereby retaining its character – the home feels traditionally Tuscan with its terracotta tiles and wooden beams. Walk barefoot across the floors to savour the coolness of those tiles on hot days, or light a fire in the wood-burning stove and stare up at the beams, imagining what life would’ve been like here. Nonnas rolling out pastry for tortellini, children helping churn gelato, wine flowing, and bowls of food changing hands in a celebration of ingredients, and life. You might even wish to recreate that – a holiday well spent.

Alternatively, spend lazy afternoons sitting under the vines outside as you watch the sunset on the horizon. Head out to authentic Italian pizzerias for pizza and gnocchi, or make a gelato run before exploring the surroundings.

We particularly love the contemporary modular sofa, artistic lighting and Asian wall art that blends with the handmade wood and antique fireplace to create a well-balanced, zen space to relax after an explorative day driving up and down the winding hillside roads. Cook up a storm in the sleek kitchen, before tucking into a big group meal in the dining room with funky decorative details – like the wooden bookshelves and Asian-influenced objects. 

But while we adore the interiors, our favourite spot has to be down by the glistening pool. Whether you're enjoying an alfresco lunch on the covered terrace, cooling off with a quick dip in the pool, or enjoying an aperitif under the canopy, you'll be able to admire the incredible green vistas. 

When you're ready to explore, there's a host of charming hamlets and villages to discover, including Volterra and Pomarance – both less than thirty minutes' drive away.
