We think it's pretty easy to see why we picked this home – just look at those views. Overlooking the bay of Nisporto, you'll have everything you need here for a slow-paced Italian escape. The interiors aren't the most exciting, but we like how the home is split across two self-contained apartments (connected by an external staircase), making it an excellent option for friends and families to holiday together while retaining some privacy. We imagine you'll spend most of your time on the terrace, but should you want to venture out, the beach is only 650m away, while the town of Portoferraio is a twenty-minute drive.

With direct access to Padulella Beach, this villa guarantees a memorable stay on the island of Elba. Outdoor living is encouraged here, thanks to the summer kitchen complete with a wood oven, infinity pool and a covered terrace overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. The outside space is lush and pretty. Roses and lavender have been planted alongside a wealth of trees, making the garden feel like an oasis. In the morning, sip coffee at the table under the gazebo, admiring the views and planning your day. If you’re anything like us, you won’t be able to resist a dip in the hedge-lined swimming pool for long. This charming apartment is in the old town of Colle di Val d'Elsa, a typically medieval region of Tuscany famous for crystal glass production. It’s a ten-minute stroll into the centre where you’ll find restaurants, cafés and archaeological museums beyond the ancient town walls. Further afield, the city of Siena is a half-hour drive away, ideal for a day trip.

The apartment itself is housed in a striking 16th-century building just outside the bridge that leads to il Castello. Wood beams on display hark back to the building’s roots, but the decor is decidedly modern. Vibrant modern art is displayed above the plush, L-shaped sofa and the kitchen is a sleek space of white cabinets. The best bit is the view from French-style windows, which shows off golden fields and hills, even though you’re a short walk from the town centre.

The highlight inside has to be the farmhouse-style kitchen with its electric oven that looks like the bread ovens of old and marble-topped counters against exposed stone walls. The barrel-vaulted dining room harks back to days gone by and throughout you’ll find wooden ceilings and terracotta floors. The living room is a surprisingly sleek and modern space, but the bedrooms – with wrought-iron frames against crisp white walls – are back to Tuscan rusticana. 

You’re out in the rolling hills of southern Tuscany here, but it’s a short hop in the car to Pomarance where you’ll find supermarkets for supplies, and a healthy handful of pizzerias, local bars and coffee shops.

You won't find wi-fi here, and the decor is quite vintage with a style that might not be for everyone, but your host can provide a cot and high chair here, making it a great choice for families looking for a slower-paced holiday. You'll be just a five-minute walk from the centre of town with its local cafes and restaurants, and if you're driving then the golden sandy beaches of Follonica are just 20km away.

Located in the coastal town of Punta Ala, you’ll have direct access to the water, via steep private steps from the garden (the trek back up isn’t for the faint-hearted). There are two living rooms here (although the design may not be everyone's cup of tea), and all of the bedrooms are en-suite, so it’s a great option for a group. We love the outdoor spaces most of all – you’ll have a choice of spots to enjoy a morning espresso, alfresco lunch, or sundowner while admiring the panoramas. Location-wise, you'll find a beach, a golf course, and Punta Ala Marina all within a few minute's drive.

If you’re in search of a traditional Italian stay in a beautiful location, this home delivers a great solution. Nestled in a private garden overlooking the Chianti countryside, you’ll be welcomed by stunning views and a private pool with a Jacuzzi. The main house consists of three independent apartments (each with its own kitchen), while an additional annexe provides a cosy space for two guests. It’s worth noting some of the furnishings and decor are a little dated, but you will find plenty of character. Plus, you can explore some of Tuscany’s most beautiful sights. From here, it’s just a thirty-minute drive to Siena, while San Gimignano and Monteriggioni are also within driving distance.
