There are lots of original features, like the frescoed coat of arms above the working fireplace. There’s no living room here as such, but there’s a kitchen and dining area to relax in. Location-wise, Castagneto Carducci is 4 kilometres away.

While the apartment may have an unconventional interior layout, such as a lack of recognised living room, its exterior social areas are stunning and the views across the region are absolutely breath-taking. The kitchen is well equipped for preparing meals to enjoy out on the terrace, while the peaceful grounds are home to a shared swimming pool and hot tub, a fire pit, and nature trails leading off into the surrounding woodland. If the city does call, you can also catch a train from the nearby town of Donoratico, with routes to Pisa, Florence and Rome.

Step inside, and you'll find a gorgeous space that reflects its rustic location perfectly. There are plenty of traditional touches, from the exposed brick and wooden ceiling beams, to the distressed wood dining table. Pick up some local ingredients, and practice your Italian-style cooking in the kitchen – it's a homely space where you can whip up the perfect risotto. When you've finished eating and sipping some Pinot Grigio, you can get comfortable in the peaceful bedroom, for a restful night's sleep. 

Although petite, Suvereto is packed with cultural delights. Wander through the labyrinth of passageways dating back to the medieval era, and stop off in the family-run restaurants for delicious pasta and pizza. Don't miss the Aldobrandesca Fortress and the beautiful Romanesque church, both just a few minutes away from your front door. A twenty-minute drive will bring you to the Etruscan Coast, with its hidden coves and pinewood forests – so, whether you want to lie on a beach or take an invigorating hike through the woods, you'll be very happy here.

This Suvereto apartment may be small, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm. Walls of exposed stone, sumptuous antique beds and ceilings adorned with wooden beams paint the picture of a traditional Tuscan holiday. Yet, in spite of the compact size, the kitchen and bathroom are sleek, stylish and modern, just the ticket for two. The window seat is our favourite spot – in the mornings, there's nothing better than enjoying an espresso as the smell of fresh-baked bread rises from the bakery below.

One of Tuscany's hidden gems, Suvereto is rife with old-world character – picture medieval walls, cobblestone streets and sidewalk cafes overlooking ancient churches. We love the laid-back pace of life here, but with vineyards, hiking trails and beaches like Spiaggia di Rimigliano all a short drive away, you'll be well-placed for exploring, too.

When it comes to picking a spot from which to soak up the sunshine, you’re utterly spoiled for choice. The home is surrounded by 10 hectares of land – think enchanting woodland, Mediterranean scrub, and ancient olive groves. Take your place with a double espresso by the pond or chill out on the terrace with a Campari and tonic at sundown. 

Spend long, hot afternoons swimming unhurried laps in the infinity pool, stopping now and again to refuel with delicious Italian fare in the rustic yet elegant dining space. If you’re keen to explore your surroundings, jump in the car and take the ten-minute drive to the seaside. Rimigliano Coastal Park was one of our favourite places to while away the hours.

There's no lift here, so you'll be climbing several flights of stairs, but we think it's a price worth paying – the private terrace lets you look out over the sea and local area. Being in a small town, you'll find a handful of eateries nearby, while the shared alfresco space is ideal for rustic feasts. There's no parking here, though your host can arrange airport transfers for an additional fee. If you are looking to explore, consider taking a ferry to nearby Elba.

Set amidst six hectares of green parkland (one of which presents the villa's private garden), prepare to immerse yourself into an abundance of peace and serenity. 

A modern build, the home was finished back in 2002 and thanks to its high-quality finishings and construction techniques, it doesn't appear to have aged a day. Either that or like a new pair of Levi jeans – it's only getting better with age. Its interior welcomes modern lines and neutral colours in keeping with the tranquil setting outside in the garden.

Think olive trees, grassy lawns, and an array of Mediterranean flowers that stand elegantly in pots and flower beds dotted all around. This charming apartment is in the old town of Colle di Val d'Elsa, a typically medieval region of Tuscany famous for crystal glass production. It’s a ten-minute stroll into the centre where you’ll find restaurants, cafés and archaeological museums beyond the ancient town walls. Further afield, the city of Siena is a half-hour drive away, ideal for a day trip.

The apartment itself is housed in a striking 16th-century building just outside the bridge that leads to il Castello. Wood beams on display hark back to the building’s roots, but the decor is decidedly modern. Vibrant modern art is displayed above the plush, L-shaped sofa and the kitchen is a sleek space of white cabinets. The best bit is the view from French-style windows, which shows off golden fields and hills, even though you’re a short walk from the town centre.

Beyond the Bridge

This elegant home in Tuscany is in a dreamy spot in a valley, in a countryside setting that leads to absolute relaxation. The villa is full of character, with antique furniture and wooden beams, in addition to mesmerising views. 

The outside space is lush and pretty. Roses and lavender have been planted alongside a wealth of trees, making the garden feel like an oasis. In the morning, sip coffee at the table under the gazebo, admiring the views and planning your day. If you’re anything like us, you won’t be able to resist a dip in the hedge-lined swimming pool for long. Slightly further afield, you can be in Siena in thirty minutes, and Florence in an hour.

It is 35km from Florence, making a day trip to the city easy. While you are there, be sure to sample some of the excellent wines from the region. After a day of exploring, kick back on the sofa in your opulent living room, before retreating to the serene calm of the bedroom for a perfect night’s sleep. With its romantic setting and unbeatable location, this would be the perfect getaway for couples.

After you've eaten, pick a book off of the shelf, and snuggle up on the sofa while the moonlight shines through the windows. An open space in a sixteenth-century building, in the hilly outskirts of Florence that, at time at times, has been both a stables and a nightclub, Thermae is one of the most spectacular places we’ve seen in Italy. Its restoration has been a labour of love for the host, Giovanni, and the way that he’s incorporated technology into the original structure is simply impressive. There’s too much to describe here, but know that everything's been taken care of. And if we did have to choose one thing that stood out, it might have to be the pool, hidden away in the vaults, and only accessible through a trapdoor.

Set on an estate dotted with trees, shrubs, and other native foliage, this home ecompasses the entire first floor of an ancient villa in Orentano. Despite sharing things like the pool, tennis court, and soccer field with another home, there is enough room on the property for it to still feel private. That’s probably helped along by the fact that you have your own private garden and barbecue – not to mention the sheer size of the home itself. Move easily between rooms and use the easy go-between as an excuse to nip into the kitchen for another cup of coffee and a dozen more biscotti to take back to where you’re reading on the plush sofa. Take the spiral staircase up to the loft where you’ll find the rustic bedrooms and bathrooms for when you’re ready to turn in at night. When you think loft, you might conjure up images of a tight squeeze, but the addition of the skylights in almost every room here allows the light to make the space feel more open. 

With the host and his family living on the estate, you’ll sometimes find yourself around the table enjoying their homemade pasta alfresco with soft music playing in the background. There’s also a brick pizza oven here, so don’t be surprised if you eat more margarita than you’d care to – we know, that is not even remotely possible. 

When you’re not enjoying the home, you can make a trip to Pisa, Voltera, or Florence – each with their unique charm – or borrow the bicycles and simply explore the surroundings on two wheels instead of four. After a day of activity under the Tuscan sun, take a late-night swim in the heated pool, and when you’re ready to return inside, why not linger a little while longer to gaze up at the stars.
