With direct access to Padulella Beach, this villa guarantees a memorable stay on the island of Elba. Outdoor living is encouraged here, thanks to the summer kitchen complete with a wood oven, infinity pool and a covered terrace overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. There’s a rustic approach to the interiors, which we find charming, and we love the sunken Jacuzzi in the main bedroom. Hiring a car is recommended if you fancy exploring the island – let your first stop be Portoferraio, a six-minute drive away.

We think it's pretty easy to see why we picked this home – just look at those views. Overlooking the bay of Nisporto, you'll have everything you need here for a slow-paced Italian escape. The interiors aren't the most exciting, but we like how the home is split across two self-contained apartments (connected by an external staircase), making it an excellent option for friends and families to holiday together while retaining some privacy. We imagine you'll spend most of your time on the terrace, but should you want to venture out, the beach is only 650m away, while the town of Portoferraio is a twenty-minute drive.

On Elba Island, just outside Lacona off the west coast of Italy, this first-floor flat is a hilltop hideaway offering sweeping views of the Tyrrhenian Sea’s turquoise waters. Certaldo Alto is a charming walled Medieval town, home to winding cobbled streets, picturesque churches, family run restaurants, and sprawling views of the verdant Tuscan countryside. It is 35km from Florence, making a day trip to the city easy. While you are there, be sure to sample some of the excellent wines from the region. After a day of exploring, kick back on the sofa in your opulent living room, before retreating to the serene calm of the bedroom for a perfect night’s sleep. With its romantic setting and unbeatable location, this would be the perfect getaway for couples. 

Fairytale in Fresco

Walls of exposed stone, sumptuous antique beds and ceilings adorned with wooden beams paint the picture of a traditional Tuscan holiday. The window seat is our favourite spot – in the mornings, there's nothing better than enjoying an espresso as the smell of fresh-baked bread rises from the bakery below.

One of Tuscany's hidden gems, Suvereto is rife with old-world character – picture medieval walls, cobblestone streets and sidewalk cafes overlooking ancient churches. Days can be spent riding the horses from the stable, exploring the area by E-bike, or taking a cookery class at the restaurant, where you might learn how to make fresh pasta or cantuccini. Enjoying a secluded spot in the Chianti countryside, this traditional stone villa is packed with things to keep you entertained. The gardens are a delight, where olive groves provide a spot for a shady stroll, and vineyards tumble down the hillside around you. Set up for a lazy lunch beneath the pergola – there’s dining for the whole group here. Shared between a handful of stone villas on the same estate, there’s a swimming pool at the bottom of the garden.

Inside, whitewashed wooden ceilings speak of days gone by and there’s a traditional Tuscan farmhouse vibe throughout. Terracotta floors keep things cool underfoot and bedrooms and bathrooms are all super spacious. The kitchen in jolly aquamarine-blue is more than big enough to handle the hustle and bustle of a busy breakfast time too.

Exploring the area, you’ll find the charming village of Lecchi to be a six-minute drive away where the ruins of an ancient castle await. Plus you’re in the Chianti wine region where the hills are dotted with family-run vineyards and wineries galore.

A former barn dating back to 1620, expect to find plenty of character touches inside – we're talking 5-metre high ceilings, wooden beams, and even fossil shells contained in the external walls. Elsa's Outlook

​​Restored by an Italian architect with a gentle touch, this villa has been updated and split into more modern apartments, but without ever compromising on the original charm. By honouring the villa's history – and thereby retaining its character – the home feels traditionally Tuscan with its terracotta tiles and wooden beams. Walk barefoot across the floors to savour the coolness of those tiles on hot days, or light a fire in the wood-burning stove and stare up at the beams, imagining what life would’ve been like here. Nonnas rolling out pastry for tortellini, children helping churn gelato, wine flowing, and bowls of food changing hands in a celebration of ingredients, and life. You might even wish to recreate that – a holiday well spent.

Alternatively, spend lazy afternoons sitting under the vines outside as you watch the sunset on the horizon. Head out to authentic Italian pizzerias for pizza and gnocchi, or make a gelato run before exploring the surroundings.

This elegant home in Tuscany is in a dreamy spot in a valley, in a countryside setting that leads to absolute relaxation. The villa is full of character, with antique furniture and wooden beams, in addition to mesmerising views. 

The outside space is lush and pretty. Roses and lavender have been planted alongside a wealth of trees, making the garden feel like an oasis. In the morning, sip coffee at the table under the gazebo, admiring the views and planning your day. If you’re anything like us, you won’t be able to resist a dip in the hedge-lined swimming pool for long. Dry off on a sun lounger with a good book, or start a table tennis tournament with your friends. 

In the evening, set up outside at the long dining table. You might like to arrange for a local chef to come and cook for you – that way you can enjoy a cocktail hour on the terrace before dining as the sun sets beyond the valley. 

The villa is only a short walk along the river to the centre of peaceful Poggibonsi, so you can easily dine out in the local restaurants or grab a gelato. Montemorli vineyard is just a twenty-minute walk up the hill, while the medieval beauty of San Gimignano is a mere twenty-one-minute drive away. Slightly further afield, you can be in Siena in thirty minutes, and Florence in an hour.

It’s a fifteen-minute drive from Volterra, a medieval walled town with plenty of farm-to-table restaurants and old churches to explore. And Siena is just under an hour’s drive for a day trip.

Panoramic views take centre stage outdoors, where raised terraces can provide shaded spots for meals outside. From a poolside lounger, you can admire the forest-clad hills around you, before slipping into the turquoise pool to cool off from the sun. Aperitivo is best served on the first-floor terrace, where comfy seating looks out over the countryside.

The villa may have the stone facade and arched windows of a traditional Tuscan farmhouse, but the wall of glass in the living and dining room is a testament to the 21st century. There’s more than enough room for the group to spread out and dine together at two banquet-sized tables inside. Unwind beneath a brick vaulted ceiling in the evening. Chefs will feel right at home in the kitchen – all chrome and steel like the professional kitchens of a Michelin-starred restaurant, but with a wood-topped pasta-making table straight out of a 19th-century farmhouse.

This is a restful home on the outskirts of the village of Brenna, which is just five minutes away on foot. If you need to cool down, you might stroll five minutes to Stazione Balneare Merse where you can swim from the river beach. Of course, the apartment is also in a great location for exploring Tuscany, whether you fancy touring the vineyards or seeing the galleries and museums of the cities. It takes twenty minutes to drive to Siena, making it a perfect day trip.

For days at home, there’s a sparkling swimming pool to cool off in, a petanque court and ping pong too. 

We’re impressed by this villa’s eco-credentials, supplied by renewable energy and with natural aromatherapy oils on offer from the lavender farm. Inside, it’s a calming medley of Japanese zen and Scandi-chic touches. The living room is set around a big fireplace and raw-wood tables and wicker lampshades are a nod to your natural surroundings. The kitchen could be the envy of any professional chef, with a huge, range-style cooker perfect for the fresh produce on your doorstep.

Getting out and exploring, you’ve got Italian countryside all around you and the village of Marsiliana is less than ten minutes drive away for supermarkets and pizzerias. Twenty minutes away you are spoiled for choice – from the charming medieval villages of Capalbio and Pitigliano to the glamorous beaches, bars and restaurants of the Silver Coast.

A fifteen-minute stroll will take you into the small country village of Vico d’Elsa, where you’ll find a fabulous pizzeria and a restaurant, as well as somewhere to stock up on groceries – ideal if you’re planning to cook on the barbecue. 

San Gimignano and its iconic towers are a twenty-two-minute drive. It’s a wonderful day trip – spend your time meandering around the narrow cobbled streets, stopping to enjoy coffee and gelato in a piazza, and soaking up the atmosphere of this historic town. 

Whether you spend your visit traversing the towns of Tuscany or prefer to stay close to home, you’ll be happy to have chosen this lovely spot. Sip lemonade by the pool as you recline in the sunshine and take in the view. Dine on the covered terrace, and admire the brightly coloured flowers dotted around the property. On cooler nights, gather here with a drink in hand for a movie or to play some music. Outside there is a table which seats ten, for al fresco dinners before a spot of stargazing.

From the food and drinks hamper waiting for you in the kitchen on arrival, laden with complimentary wine, olive oil, fruit and cooking supplies, to the range of activities available to book through your host, whether it be horse riding, a cooking class, or a cycling trip.
