Traditional inside and out, this apartment puts the rolling countryside practically on your doorstep. Alongside the estate's other apartments, you'll have access to a seasonal swimming pool and a sprawling garden where you can laze away in the sunshine. Another perk is the private balcony, offering scenic views that pair nicely with a bottle of Italy's finest. While the interior is a little dated, we think it's cosy – and the location is wonderful. You're just 4 kilometres from the centre of Scarlino, a little hilltop commune with cobbled streets and stone buildings. Drive 10 kilometres and you'll hit Cala Violina, a sandy beach on the Gulf of Follonica.

This clifftop villa caught our eye for its views across the Tyrrhenian Sea. Located in the coastal town of Punta Ala, you’ll have direct access to the water, via steep private steps from the garden (the trek back up isn’t for the faint-hearted). There are two living rooms here (although the design may not be everyone's cup of tea), and all of the bedrooms are en-suite, so it’s a great option for a group. We love the outdoor spaces most of all – you’ll have a choice of spots to enjoy a morning espresso, alfresco lunch, or sundowner while admiring the panoramas. Location-wise, you'll find a beach, a golf course, and Punta Ala Marina all within a few minute's drive.

It’s worth noting that the keeper lives on-site in a separate home near the entrance gate, and there’s an annexe on-site for the exclusive use of the owner, but don’t let that detract from everything this home offers. This Suvereto apartment may be small, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm. Walls of exposed stone, sumptuous antique beds and ceilings adorned with wooden beams paint the picture of a traditional Tuscan holiday. Yet, in spite of the compact size, the kitchen and bathroom are sleek, stylish and modern, just the ticket for two. The window seat is our favourite spot – in the mornings, there's nothing better than enjoying an espresso as the smell of fresh-baked bread rises from the bakery below.

One of Tuscany's hidden gems, Suvereto is rife with old-world character – picture medieval walls, cobblestone streets and sidewalk cafes overlooking ancient churches. We love the laid-back pace of life here, but with vineyards, hiking trails and beaches like Spiaggia di Rimigliano all a short drive away, you'll be well-placed for exploring, too.

Perched on a hill overlooking the Tuscan countryside, this 500-year-old Italian castle is kitted out for huge group gatherings, celebrations, and luxurious family get-togethers. It's in the middle of a sprawling estate, flanked by olive trees and grapevines, yet it's only one kilometre from Venturina Terme, so you're not completely out in the sticks. 

When you’re not lounging on the beaches of San Vincenzo, a ten-minute drive away, there's a private pool and Jacuzzi to cool off in, and the gorgeous patios and lawns can be transformed into the perfect Tuscan wedding venue. Period furniture and oak-panelled walls lined with oil portraits make it feel as though this place hasn't changed since the Grand Duke of Tuscany called it home.

This elegant home in Tuscany is in a dreamy spot in a valley, in a countryside setting that leads to absolute relaxation. The villa is full of character, with antique furniture and wooden beams, in addition to mesmerising views. 

The outside space is lush and pretty. Roses and lavender have been planted alongside a wealth of trees, making the garden feel like an oasis. In the morning, sip coffee at the table under the gazebo, admiring the views and planning your day. If you’re anything like us, you won’t be able to resist a dip in the hedge-lined swimming pool for long. Dry off on a sun lounger with a good book, or start a table tennis tournament with your friends. 

In the evening, set up outside at the long dining table. You might like to arrange for a local chef to come and cook for you – that way you can enjoy a cocktail hour on the terrace before dining as the sun sets beyond the valley. 

The villa is only a short walk along the river to the centre of peaceful Poggibonsi, so you can easily dine out in the local restaurants or grab a gelato. Montemorli vineyard is just a twenty-minute walk up the hill, while the medieval beauty of San Gimignano is a mere twenty-one-minute drive away. Slightly further afield, you can be in Siena in thirty minutes, and Florence in an hour.

Spend the day at Constanti winery – this is where your host works, so she will be more than happy to give you a tour of the place. Beautiful vineyards surround the loft and a wide range of wineries to sample some of the tastiest glasses of red.

Return home to sit at the dining table while the scent of a home-cooked Italian meal fills the room from the nearby kitchen. After you've eaten, pick a book off of the shelf, and snuggle up on the sofa while the moonlight shines through the windows. It is 35km from Florence, making a day trip to the city easy. While you are there, be sure to sample some of the excellent wines from the region. After a day of exploring, kick back on the sofa in your opulent living room, before retreating to the serene calm of the bedroom for a perfect night’s sleep. With its romantic setting and unbeatable location, this would be the perfect getaway for couples.

Though the furniture could use a refresh, the panoramas pair perfectly with a glass of wine. The design inside pays homage to the coastal setting, with shades of blue and wicker accents. It's a little dated but no less comfortable. When you're ready to venture out, the sea and beach are a short walk away.

Start your first evening here with the bottle of wine from your welcome basket which has been produced on the vineyard here, as you enjoy the incredible views from your private garden. Then, when you wake the next day, start your morning with a sugary sweet coffee – also provided in your welcome basket – before you relax in a deck chair with a good book. 

For those who love walking or cycling, this beautiful setting provides the perfect area for exploring, as the farm is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and woodlands that you can wander freely. In the early evening, we would love to stop at the shaded terrace overlooking the large gardens to taste the farm’s wines, while admiring the view of the surrounding hills. 

Then for dinner, why not take advantage of the barbecue, and cook some delicious Spiedini skewers, to enjoy in Italian alfresco style with a glass of refreshing wine, accompanied by the fantastic vista on offer. When you retire inside, the home’s natural elements of stone walls, terracotta floors and wooden ceilings will keep the rooms pleasantly cool in the summer and warm in the winters, while the twentieth-century furnishings provide comfort for relaxing hours before bedtime.

This home caught our eye for its peaceful location in the Italian countryside, surrounded by fields and vineyards. While you’ll feel like you’ve got away from it all here, you’re only a 6-kilometre drive from the nearest town for stocking up on supplies. And if you fancy a daytrip, historic Massa Marittima is 10 kilometres away. The home itself boasts a private pool, a choice of outdoor seating areas, and countryside views. While the traditional decor inside won’t be to everyone’s tastes, we think the exposed wooden beams and stone archways give the home heaps of character.
