Bold, bright and modern with a knock-out location, this aparment is close to some of Pisa's best bits. The iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa, for one, is only a few minutes away on foot. And so is Mura di Pisa and Lion's Gate. After a long day of sightseeing, the living space is ideal for relaxing. It's worth noting the sofa also doubles as a bed for two guests, but with a door present, you'll find an element of privacy. Apart from a great central spot, we also like the outdoor seating where you can take a moment to yourself every now and again.

This fairy tale cottage offers front row seats to a freshwater stream that runs directly from the Monte Pisano mountains. Inside, it’s a homespun delight with antique furnishings that have been in your host’s family for centuries. You’ll split your time between the cosy living space, reclining on the sofa with a glass of robust red, and the enchanting garden – plate up Tuscan favourites at the dining table or sip a coffee beside the trickling brook. We had a particular soft spot for the bedrooms – we loved the nature theme in combination with the original ceiling beams to create a fresh but warm atmosphere. The Walled City of Lucca is an eighteen-minute drive from your abode. Spend sunny afternoons exploring the Renaissance ramparts and the Cattedrale di San Martino. When lovingly restoring this historic Tuscan farmhouse, the hosts chose to keep certain period features, such as the brickwork and wooden beams. However, they also oversaw some pretty impressive additions.

Obviously, we have to start with the outdoor swimming pool made from local stone, which sits in the middle of the expansive grounds. A solarium complete with loungers and umbrellas can be found conveniently alongside. As if that wasn't enough, there's also a gazebo just outside the back door where you can enjoy alfresco feasts that stretch long into the evening. Inside the home, you'll find walls painted in pleasing pastels, a modern kitchen dominated by clean lines and some eye-catching feature lighting.

Surrounding the address, there's a stream and woodland for tranquil strolls, as well as plenty of nature reserves nearby. You'll also find a wealth of attractions in the towns of Lucca and Pisa, both reached in just over twenty minutes by car.

Dating back to the 1600s, this hunting lodge in the Lucca countryside features inspiring views, original frescoes and plenty of modern conveniences. Three living areas provide enough room for the whole group to spread out and two ground-floor bedrooms mean those who struggle with stairs don’t have to miss out. Outside, it’s just as impressive. A brook flows through the garden and the swimming pool is sure to be a hit. Although there are plenty of dining spaces here, if you fancy eating out, the restaurants of Lucca and Pisa are less than a thirty-minute drive away.

We recommend hiring a car here as there's plenty to do and see within a short drive. The historic town of Lucca with its colourful buildings and ancient monuments is only twenty-six-minutes away, and the lovable Pisa with its must-see leaning tower is a thirty-eight-minute drive. No matter where you choose to go, you'll find vibrant Italian culture to soak up (and so much good food). The home itself is located in the village of Sant’Andrea di Compito – a place known for its stunning Camellia trees dating back to the 1800s. We recommend wandering its streets and taking in the medieval charm.

Boasting stunning views of the town's historic rooftops and medieval towers, this two-level apartment is the ideal Lucca retreat. It’s light and airy with lots of character features, but we should probably mention that the bathroom is a bit dated. And although there’s a lift here there’s still a flight of stairs to climb. We’re sure you’ll love the location here. It’s situated between the vibrant Piazza San Michele and the Via Fillungo, so you’ll have plenty of boutiques and restaurants on your doorstep.

This heavenly home couldn’t ask for a more idyllic location. It’s set into the rolling hills that define the border between Lucca and Pisa – two must-see cities – where ancient villages, petite castles and historic churches and palaces sit amid impossibly green vegetation. Surrounded by scenic woodland, you’ll find your only neighbours to be friendly foxes, boar, weasels and curious badgers. Built in the 1700s, this large, green-shuttered farmhouse sports a modern renovation that maintains the integrity of the past through its stone facade and flooring, charmingly crooked ceiling beams and a quaint, tiled kitchen perfect for rustling up hearty sharing plates of antipasto. Outside, sprawling lawns create a sense that the entire hillside is your playground, and you’ll find many seating and lounging areas to unwind in when you’re not splashing around in the turquoise pool. But we’ve saved our favourite feature for last: the tiled terrace, with its sloped beam roof supported by sturdy stone columns is utterly paradisiacal. Here, dine lavishly under a chandelier, surrounded by tropical plants and tumbling vines that create a pretty border for your uninterrupted mountain views.

Made up of a main house and a hayloft with its own living room and kitchen, there's plenty of space for a family or group of friends to stretch out. We think a couple of areas could do with a touch-up, especially in the hayloft, but the views over the Compitese hills from the private pool are lovely. You'll want a car for exploring, and there's no shortage of hot spots like Lucca, Pisa, and Florence nearby.

Outside, the villa is a vision of Tuscan tradition, with green-shuttered windows and a terracotta roof. And the interior doesn’t disappoint either. The kitchen feels like stepping back into the 16th century, with copper pots and pans hanging from the walls and a granite-topped dining table in the centre that looks like it’s seen many hands rolling and shaping pasta over the centuries. The cauldron-pot in the old hearth is a nice touch – but don’t worry, there’s an electric oven and stove for 21st-century cooking too. 

There’s a grand lounge, lit by a sparkling chandelier, for classy evenings in and a second sitting room in splendid Victorian-style floral wallpaper. Throwing open the French doors in here, you can breathe in the fresh air and admire the Tuscan hills before you. Bedrooms are beautiful spaces – particularly the four-poster room with the upright piano which feels like it’s fit for Italian nobility.
