A tree-lined driveway leads to the impressive, tangerine facade of this Italian villa. It’s in the countryside, just on the outskirts of the charming town of Pistoia. A ten-minute drive sees you in the town centre, where an ancient duomo and old family towers await to be explored. If you fancy a day trip, Lucca is just a forty-five-minute drive. Sunny days beg for a dip in the Roman-style swimming pool and there are plenty of shaded nooks and verandas to relax with a good book. Breakfast can be taken in the big, country-style kitchen which looks like a vision of yesteryear with its log-fired hearth still active and a dedicated pasta maker and charcuterie slicer. Dine outside (roof on or roof off, it’s up to you) or in the formal dining room inside at an antique table. In here you’ll also find a music corner for the maestro of the group – a vintage record player alongside an accordion and grand piano. This villa is where real Italian living is the name of the game.

Inside, you’ll find wooden beams, exposed brick walls, stone staircases and typically Tuscan decor, so it’ll feel like another world when you step into the basement, with its Jacuzzi room painted with palm trees and a brilliant yellow sky.

Greeting you with wrought-iron gates, this eighteenth-century Tuscan villa immerses you in the past while maintaining one foot firmly in the present. Set in rolling countryside, just a short drive from the city of Pistoia, it's about as charming as it gets. Think staggering scenery, beautiful terraces, stone courtyards and terracotta tiles. The estate is private and pristine, with immaculate lawns, fragrant flowers and a backdrop of gently swaying pine trees. It's out here that we think you'll spend most of your time, by the glorious infinity pool with far-reaching views. Up at the house, you'll step into history, with so many character features it could be used as a setting for a film. There's a grand living space, with a magnificent fireplace and huge dining table, along with a rustic kitchen and a second lounge. But it's the bedrooms that we fell head over heels with – furnished with antiques and with beamed ceilings and shuttered windows, they're simply beautiful. The ground floor bedroom even opens to a covered veranda with a table and chairs, and the master bedroom's ensuite has a Turkish bath where you can enjoy some aromatherapy. Dining outside on the terrace is an all-day affair, with a barbecue for some of the fresh produce you can pick up locally. And in the evening, why not slip into the hot tub as the sun sets. And although it feels secluded, this place is just a forty-minute drive from Lucca and an hour from Florence.

When staying in the spa town of Montecatini Terme, it’s only right to have a spa of your own. This gorgeous villa, nestled between Florence and Lucca, has relaxation down to a tee. Want for nothing with expansive gardens, a private gym, a huge glistening pool, and a spa complete with a huge jacuzzi, sauna, and Turkish bath. 

It might have every luxury you could ask for, with a modern interior that practically sparkles, but the home is traditional and charming. Creamy walls, white shuttered windows, and a terracotta tiled roof, characteristic of a Tuscan abode, set the scene for a blissful stay. 

While the home itself is lovely, we can’t get over the panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside. Atmospheric rolling hills and sprawling fields are everywhere you turn. It’s the perfect setting to unwind and relax by the pool. Better yet, take in the view from your jacuzzi. The spa might be for the grown-ups, but the kids will love the opportunities for games in the L-shaped pool.

Whereas most homes give you a single terrace if you're lucky, this Tuscan property spoils you with outdoor spaces. As well as a lounge given some shade by a large parasol, there's also a separate deck with an alfresco dining table and a stone barbecue, plus another area that holds a swimming pool.

Although we're betting you'll be spending most of your time in the open air, the interior is also pleasing to the eye as well. Through the arched doorways, guests will be greeted by a rustic interior, complete with cooling tiles on the floor, patterned walls in the kitchen and lots of botanical-themed artwork dotted about the place.

The local village of Vellano can be reached in around ten minutes' stroll and has a couple of restaurants for when you get peckish. Further afield, there are Tuscan towns that can be reached in under an hour's drive, such as Montecatini Terme, Lucca and Pistoia. If you're up for a slightly longer journey, Florence is only an hour and twenty minutes' drive from the home.

Decadent in every sense of the word, this villa in the Tuscan countryside is a dream come true, as far as we're concerned. Owned by a bespoke interior designer, it should come as no surprise that every room is a treasure trove, filled with plush furniture, eclectic knick-knacks, antique furniture and that unique designer touch that makes it sing. Historic character is around every corner – we're particularly fond of the wooden beams and brick ceilings – but all the mod-cons are accounted for, including a stunning chef's kitchen perfect for meal prepping and small, luxurious bathrooms complete with rainfall showers.

But there's no denying that the garden is the best part of all. Romantic and magical, we'd happily spend all our time out here, admiring the medieval architecture of the 10th-century church next door. While away lazy afternoons swimming in the private pool, sunbathing on the lounge chairs and reading in the gazebo. Come dinnertime, share an Italian feast and a bottle of Tuscan wine under the leafy pergola as the night falls, surrounded by twinkling fairy lights. When you're ready to venture out, Tuscany's main sights are all reachable by car – including Florence, Lucca and Pistoia – but we're just as happy to stay local and discover Montecarlo's traditional eateries, wineries and medieval fortress.

This magnificent yellow house sits in the rolling countryside between Lucca and Tuscany, offering incredible views of this lush, green part of Italy. The home is elegant and unique, with ceiling frescoes in the bedrooms and even a consecrated chapel in the grounds – this would be a magical setting for a wedding. 

Special events aside, this is a wonderful holiday home whether you’re travelling with friends or family. There’s plenty of room, including a spacious traditional kitchen – why not hire a private chef and enjoy an alfresco feast on the terrace? The outdoor space is marvellous, set over several terraced levels. The result is incredible views of the Tuscan countryside from every angle. The swimming pool is sheltered from view by a row of trees on one side, and open to sweeping views on the other – it’s glorious at any time of day, but we’re particularly fond of a sunset swim. 

The villa is only a thirty-minute drive from Lucca, and within easy reach of Florence too – the train to Florence takes an hour and eleven minutes. Spend a morning in Lucca admiring the architecture from a picturesque square, then stroll around the medieval centre with a gelato. For some top-notch relaxation, we recommend driving fourteen minutes to Montecatini Terme. This gem of a town boasts nine thermal spas housed in historic buildings – it feels like stepping back in time in the best way. 

There’s so much to see and do in this beautiful part of Italy, and this spectacular home is the ideal base from which to explore. When you’ve taken in all the sights you can manage, recline on the terrace with a glass of Chianti. Bliss.

An hour's drive from Florence, this traditional villa is an excellent base for discovering Tuscany. The garden and surrounding 45-acre grounds are the biggest draw – there's a private pool, scenic terrace, and sweeping panoramas of the surrounding countryside. An evening spent watching the sun go down over a glass of wine is the perfect way to unwind, and you can do just that here. The decor inside is traditionally Tuscan, but two kitchens and multiple lounges offer plenty of space for groups. Just note that one of the bedrooms is on a mezzanine, so the ceilings are low, and the space is quite tight.

This home is packed with Tuscan charm – no surprise, considering it was built in the 18th century. Originally two houses (now combined into one), this place has a lot of room to spare. It's filled with antiques, old-school artwork, and buckets of character. The layout is a little quirky, given its past, so expect several stairs, a sofa bed for two, and some beds on the mezzanines – you'll also need to provide your own towels. And we can't forget the garden. Set on 7 hectares, you'll have fantastic views across the western slopes of Monte Albano – best enjoyed from the pool, Jacuzzi, or alfresco dining terrace. Factor in the proximity to Florence, and we think it's a no-brainer.

If you’re looking for local immersion in a quintessentially Tuscan home, you've found it. Once the lowly hayloft of a country retreat for nobles, it’s been elevated to something wonderful. It’s rustic – think exposed brick, cooling stone floors and original wood beams – but with the kind of luxe touches that wouldn’t look out of place in a Renaissance townhouse. We love the juxtaposition of homely vibes with ornate flourishes. Who knew chandeliers could look so good in a barn? Set on a private estate, with lush gardens all around, the owners are your only neighbours. Signora Rosa will welcome you with open arms (and maybe even a slice of homemade torta), and the whole family is on hand to help, while also respecting your privacy. There are two complimentary bicycles available for guests, making the five-minute walk to the local town even quicker. Here you can pick up groceries to cook up an alfresco feast; you’ll want to make use of the pretty, shaded outdoor dining area with views over the immaculate grounds. There’s even a wood-fired pizza oven, so you’d better start practising your dough spinning. We’d happily hole up in this place for a week or two, but with a car, it’s the perfect base for exploring Tuscany.

This rustic farmhouse surrounded by picturesque hills makes for a restful Tuscan retreat. The interiors are a little dated in parts, but perfectly comfortable for a rural stay – the dining room with panoramic windows is a highlight. Outside, the terrace offers swing seats, loungers and a dining area, so you can maximise every moment with those country views. The unpaved track to this house is a little tricky to navigate, so it’s not the best for low-suspension cars. Nearby you’ll find Pescia’s authentic restaurants and shops, while Lucca lies less than 25km away should you feel like a day in the city.

Boasting noble origins and surrounded by 10 hectares of land, this villa guarantees a stay to remember. Inside, you'll find 19th-century antiques and ceiling frescoes – and while this may not appeal to the modernists among you, the place has that quintessential Tuscan charm that we can’t get enough of. Taking advantage of the glorious weather couldn’t be easier thanks to the alfresco dining terrace and seating area, and when you need to cool off, there’s a private pool. Location-wise, Montecatini Terme is within easy driving distance, but if you fancy exploring further afield, Pisa is our day-trip destination of choice.

An open space in a sixteenth-century building, in the hilly outskirts of Florence that, at time at times, has been both a stables and a nightclub, Thermae is one of the most spectacular places we’ve seen in Italy. Its restoration has been a labour of love for the host, Giovanni, and the way that he’s incorporated technology into the original structure is simply impressive. There’s too much to describe here, but know that everything's been taken care of. And if we did have to choose one thing that stood out, it might have to be the pool, hidden away in the vaults, and only accessible through a trapdoor.

Lucca and its many attractions, such as the Guinigi Tower and the Puccini Museum, are a few miles away. Or the village of Tofori is nearby, while if you like gardens, the Giardino di Villa Garzoni is a must-see.

Sitting among the green hills of the Valdinievole, this quintessentially Tuscan villa puts guests in the middle of some truly gorgeous scenery, while offering plenty to do should they ever tire of the views – although we think that's unlikely to happen.

During the warmer months, it's not difficult to imagine countless hours spent in the home's outdoor space. The swimming pool is sure to be popular on summer afternoons, but you can just as easily enjoy the sunshine while playing table tennis on the terrace or enjoying hearty alfresco feasts on the pergola.

Certaldo Alto is a charming walled Medieval town, home to winding cobbled streets, picturesque churches, family run restaurants, and sprawling views of the verdant Tuscan countryside. It is 35km from Florence, making a day trip to the city easy. While you are there, be sure to sample some of the excellent wines from the region. After a day of exploring, kick back on the sofa in your opulent living room, before retreating to the serene calm of the bedroom for a perfect night’s sleep. With its romantic setting and unbeatable location, this would be the perfect getaway for couples.
