Forty minutes away by car from the medieval walled city of Lucca, this villa is another fine example from the medieval era – a former castle. If you’re looking for the royal treatment, you might have found it.

Set among a spectacular array of fruit trees and bushes in its gardens, the scents of lavender, lemon, orange, and rose are thick in the air. With multiple levelled terraces, you can survey your lush kingdom from the top of the castle. You might find yourself particularly drawn to the glimmering, private pool on the lower level. Give your subjects (or family) a wave from the top, before heading down into the historic interiors. 

Exposed masonry, flagstone floors, and vintage furnishings complete the look in the lounge. But the kitchen is surprisingly modern, with glossy chrome fixtures and marble floors keeping that luxe edge. From here, it's just a twelve-minute drive to the beautiful city of Camaiore, or head in the opposite direction to get to the beach at Viareggio in around the same time.

Whether you're enjoying a glass of wine on the terrace or floating in the shared swimming pool, the mountain views here are sure to set the scene for an unforgettable stay in the Province of Lucca. Early risers can savour an espresso in the morning sunshine on the terrace and in the evenings, you can fire up the barbecue and dig into an alfresco feast as the day slowly fades. We think it's the definition of relaxing, and the interior is just as cosy, with exposed wooden beams, squishy sofas and a rustic kitchen well-stocked with cookware if you're not up for grilling. 

The location is also excellent, with some of Italy's best seaside towns within easy reach – be it Viareggio and Lido di Camaiore (both twenty minutes by car) or Forte dei Marmi (half-an-hour drive). Or spend the afternoon wandering through Lucca's medieval city centre, admiring the ancient churches and browsing the many independent art galleries – it's a forty-minute drive away.

Only a 100-metre stroll from Marina di Pietrasanta's beach, this villa is made for coastal-loving families. With the sea in walking distance and cities like Pisa and Lucca not far by car, we reckon most of your time will be spent exploring. But, if you're keen to enjoy a more relaxed pace, there's plenty to appreciate back home, too. The private terrace and small garden are perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine in the fresh air. Indoors, there's a cosy living room, a well-equipped kitchen, and three comfortable bedrooms – although air conditioning is only available in the hallway. We think it makes a great option for a Tuscan seaside retreat.

Location-wise, the beach is a mere hop, skip and jump away, so if the sun gets a little much, you can cool off in the sea in no time.

Practically the subject of an entire film genre, restoring a farmhouse in Tuscany’s countryside is the stuff of fantasies – only here, someone else has done the job for you and you get to kick back and enjoy the fruits of their labour. Set among rolling hills, a thirty-five-minute drive to the historic city of Lucca and twenty minutes to the alluring Viareggio coastline, this exceptional villa gazes out over the distant mountains. French doors flanked by green shutters and wide archways let the sunlight flood into every room, gently warming the pale terracotta-hued tiles. Farm life is not forgotten in this restoration – a country-style kitchen complete with rooster motif and copper pots invites you to spend an evening tending to traditional Tuscan cuisine, while beamed ceilings and a healthy dose of wood and wicker furniture ensure the natural world never feels far away. This ancient Tuscan hamlet (or ‘borgo’) sits atop a hill, with views over the countryside as far as the eye can see. On a clear day, you can catch a glimpse of Corsica on the horizon. Surrounded by olive groves, organic vegetable gardens, ancient trees and donkey paddocks, this is the place to immerse yourself in provincial Italian life. Plus, the cities of Pisa and Lucca are within day-tripping distance.

Designed by architect Stefano Viviani, this villa blends into the landscape seamlessly. The wooden terrace juts out of the hillside, allowing for panoramic views of the countryside sprawling before you, from the cool of the plunge pool or the soothing heat of the hot tub. Loungers and reclining chairs are set up the face the view and there’s shaded dining and a lounge area on the lower terrace.

Inside, you can see the work of an architect on display in every handmade step, wall of windows and traditional-style fireplace. It’s a vision of soft greys and white, with picture-frame windows at every turn to display the view as proudly as any of the donkey-themed modern artworks on the walls. Sculptures are displayed with museum-level curation, in glass boxes, and the coffee table is littered with thick art books. The kitchen, beneath a wooden ceiling, is an ode to rusticana with a huge island in the centre, yet feels modern in dove grey and light wood. Then there are the bedrooms, both boasting panoramic views from walls of windows the instant you wake up.

Hop on the bikes provided to go out and explore Pietrasanta’s many sights, like the Duomo, the Museo dei Bozzetti and the Rocca di Sala – all two minutes away by bike or under a ten-minute walk away. If you fancy exploring further – Lucca and Pisa are around a thirty-minute drive away. Back at this home, relax on the balcony overlooking the communal gardens with a Prosecco. Inside, colourful velvets add a luxurious touch, while large French doors flood the dining room with light – enjoy some spaghetti alle vongole at the table here or unwind on the chaise sofa. We love the nod to this home’s coastal setting too, with its seashell prints and coral ornaments dotted around.
