Out in the rolling hills of Umbria, this pretty stone villa embraces the quiet, provincial life. It’s surrounded by two hectares of forest, olive groves and fieldland and the private gardens are alive with lavender and fragrant Mediterranean herbs. Between the plant life, there are sunloungers on lawns, a children’s play park and plenty of shaded spots beneath trees to settle down with a good book. Perhaps the crowning glory of the gardens is the turquoise swimming pool, shimmering in the Umbrian sunshine. Though foodies may argue it’s the rustic summer kitchen with its brick-built grill, stone sink and prep area for long, lazy lunches in the loggia outside.

The home is split between the main villa and a separate annexe, and large groups will find myriad sitting rooms and lounges to spread out. Smoke-blackened hearths speak of the home’s history and sitting rooms beneath wooden ceilings are home to antique furniture and little libraries of holiday reads. There are two kitchens to choose from – one in the annexe and one in the main villa, and we love the annexe’s living room with its arched window looking out over the undulating Umbrian countryside.  

Should you wish to explore beyond the grounds, the pretty town of Todi is around three kilometres away. It’s picture-perfect, perched on a hilltop where rambling medieval streets house local trattoria and quaint little shops. This is where you can stock up on supplies at the supermarket too.

This stunning piece of Umbrian history that dates back to the twelfth century is an absolute treat for everyone who wants to experience history firsthand and get absolutely spoiled in the process. The redesign that includes great daring art pieces, rough-luxe walls, and antique furniture that won't let you forget that you're staying in an actual castle is nothing compared to the feeling of looking down from the top of the tower and seeing everything the valley has to offer. For a short while, you are nobility, dining alfresco under the gentle shade, strolling down to the pool with a glass of Chianti, watching movies with your loved ones and sleeping in the regal beds. Built in the 12th century, this ancient tower rises out of the forest like a scene from a painting. It was once the home of an aristocratic family and we imagine they would be proud of the lavish reconstruction that’s taken place here. Old stone fireplaces sit alongside striking mid-century furniture and vibrant modern artworks are sandwiched between terracotta floors and wood-beamed ceilings. As you wind your way up the tower, the view over the forests and hills around you gets better and better, all from original arched windows. Antique beds adorn each plush bedroom and there’s something fairytale-esque about drifting off to sleep at the top of a tower.

Outside, there’s a long dining table amidst the flowers and greenery, perfect for a long, lazy Italian lunch. A sleek little swimming pool hangs off the side of the garden, and loungers here look out over the hills to a rival tower in the distance. If you're staying to celebrate something special, there's a little 18th century chapel in the grounds too. Should you tire of your defensive position amidst the trees, head into the charming hilltop city of Perugia for good food and historic sights.

Two guests will share a sofa bed on the mezzanine, though – since privacy is limited, we think it's best for kids. Location-wise, you're just a short drive from the small medieval town of Gualdo Cattaneo, while Todi, Perugia and Assisi are all excellent options for day trips.

It’s pure peace and quiet out here between the endless olive groves (extra virgin olive oil is the region’s speciality) and rolling hills covered in a patchwork of fields. It’s five kilometres to Monte Castello di Vibio with its ancient theatre and fifteen kilometres to the pretty town of Todi for restaurants and supermarkets.

The yard, where wheat was once threshed by hand, is now home to a smattering of chairs and tables for tipples in the sunshine. The porticoed upper terrace is the perfect spot for breakfast, or big barbecue lunches, with views of the 22-hectare estate. But the crowning glory of the gardens has to be that Roman-style swimming pool with its panoramic view of the countryside.

Accommodation is split between three separate buildings set around the courtyard. Two annexes have their own kitchenettes, living rooms and dining area so the group can spread out. The main villa is home to myriad antique-filled lounges and living rooms, including a striking main lounge set around the ancient hearth. Low, wood-beamed ceilings and old agricultural tools on the walls give that rustic farmhouse feel. A little games room invites guests to sit down for a game of chess or to peruse the library of books in here. But the real bonus inside is the dedicated celebration room which is a vast, barn-like space which can be set up for dining, dancing or even a spot of yoga.

Your host can help arrange fun experiences, including both cookery and yoga classes.

Somewhat unsurprisingly given the rural location, the living quarters lie on the rustic side of things and are heavy on natural materials, be that wooden beams or stone walls. We can't think of a cosier way of ending the day than by taking up residence next to the traditional fireplace, either.

Beyond the edge of the grounds, you'll find unspoilt countryside in Monte Peglia park and Meana forest – the latter of which was recently classified as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. Lake Trasimeno is an hour's drive north if you fancy trying your hand at watersports, as well.
