There are a lot of things we like about this lodge in the Alpine village of Cortina d'Amprezzo, but we'd be lying if we didn't single out the rather lovely view from the balcony as our standout highlight – from this spot, it's possible to gaze out over the locale's rooftops and dramatically beautiful mountains beyond.

Back inside, the interior design is as rustic as you might imagine, with an abundance of wood in everything from the walls and floors to the furnishings and finishes. A few pieces of artwork and natural decorative items lend a little character, while the horseshoe-shaped kitchen has enough space for cooking up hearty dinners when you're fresh off the slopes.

Ah yes, skiing – there's plenty of opportunity for winter sports here, with lifts up to the slopes lying within walking distance. Even closer, there are restaurants, shops and a museum within the town to explore.

Just an hour's drive from Venice, this hilltop villa offers panoramic countryside views. But with three floors and steep steps here, it will be difficult for guests who struggle with stairs. The top-floor main suite is one of our favourites – we can't resist the wooden ceilings or that stone bathtub – but the sun-kissed terrace and private pool are close seconds. Day trips are easy with Treviso and Padova within driving distance, but if you'd prefer to stay closer to home, Asolo is a twenty-minute walk away and has artisan shops and restaurants.

If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the fish and turtles swimming in the pond. Once you've taken it all in, head back to the Mediterranean conservatory lounge for some shisha and herbal tea. From there, the world is your oyster. Why not book a massage at the spa? Or head out to discover the local town of Vitorio Venito steeping in history. It's safe to say we wouldn't recommend leaving here without going on a wine tour and tastings of one of the local Prosecco vineyards either.

From here, you can enjoy a wonderful view of Dolomiti and the Cortina Centre, and be just a short distance from the slopes.

After days spent out in the cold, you can come inside into the cosy warm interiors of this traditional lodge, with welcoming vibes that make you feel right at home. Set in a traditional chalet-style building with a wooden roof and pretty wooden balcony in the Italian Alps, this charming home is ideal for an adventure-packed mountain escape. But the real draw here is the views. Out in the garden, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping, jaw-dropping views of the Alps.

Fresh mountain air flows through this valley in the South Tyrol district, the northernmost region in Italy. It boasts some of the most majestic mountain views in the country – and that’s just one of the reasons we fell in love with this home. 

The first thing you'll notice as you approach is the chalet-like charm, set among a rolling meadow landscape. The apartment is located on the ground floor and has a simple yet, classic interior style – this pared-back style allows the magnificent scenery outside to steal the spotlight. Soft neutral tones are used throughout, giving the space a retreat-like feel. The feeling is further amplified by the on-site amenities like an infrared sauna room and steam room where you can soothe your muscles between adventures. 

During the winter months, skiers and snowboarders can take a seven-minute drive to the slopes at the Reinswald resort to shred some powder. If you're visiting during the warmer seasons, then you can take your pick from outdoor activities including horse riding, cycling, and golf, all with the epic alpine backdrops. And, with the town of Sarnthein just seven minutes away by car, you can make a splash in the outdoor swimming pool and then refuel with some hearty fare from one of the local restaurants.

Sitting right in the middle of the Alpine town of Cortina D'Amprezzo, this recently refurbished apartment has a rather suave style that piqued our interest, not to mention some pretty views of the local town and the surrounding mountainsides that you can enjoy from the small terrace. We won't lie, we've seen bigger kitchens and bedrooms, but we'd be willing to overlook this, particularly as the lifts to both Tofana and Faloria ski slopes lie so close to the front door. Oh, and did we mention that there's a sauna to warm up in afterwards? Well, there is.

Amid the historic streets of Cannaregio, this apartment is ideally placed to drop off your bags and explore Venice. From here, it’s a short walk to churches, restaurants, bars and shops (including one of Italy’s most beautiful supermarkets). The train station is also nearby and your host is on hand to help organise airport transfers. It’s worth noting the apartment is on the third floor with no lift access, but you will find everything you could need to settle in and unwind. The rooms are simple, fresh and well-suited to couples in search of practicality and ease.

Set in the Cannaregio district, this apartment makes a great base for an inspiring city stay. Just a few steps from the Ponte delle Guglie, you’ll find easy access to iconic sights as well as local restaurants, bars and shops. The nearest supermarket (described as one of the most beautiful supermarkets in Italy) is a short walk away, and there are great public transport links. Your host can help organise airport transfers and you’ll find everything you could need to settle in and unwind. The rooms are simple, comfortable and family friendly with the handy addition of a sofa bed for one guest. 

Modern Venice

You can live like a local in this area of Venice, just a short walk from the train station and Piazzale Roma. It’s also an easy stroll from the ancient Jewish quarter and the frescoes of Tiepolo of Sant'Alvise and Madonna dell'Orto. Back at this apartment, we love the vaulted beamed ceilings and the views out over the rooftops of Venice. At full capacity, one guest will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the bedroom, so this place might best suit a family.

Venice & Beyond

This apartment is close to the Church of the Madonna dell'Orto and the house where Venetian painter Tintoretto was born. Away from the main tourist areas, you can live like a local here. Back at this home, there’s a private terrace to enjoy a drink and there’s a well-equipped kitchen for when you prefer some home-cooked food. There’s a comfy bedroom with an en-suite, too, but we would say the stairs are fairly steep. Otherwise, this is a great pad to explore all that Venice offers.

Jewel by the Water

You can spot a different Venetian landmark from nearly every window of this Cannaregio District apartment. But the views are at their best from the showstopping private rooftop terrace – on a clear day, the panoramas stretch as far as the Dolomites. Though full of vintage character, this home does come with its quirks. The third bedroom has a mezzanine level accessed via a narrow staircase, which isn't overly child-friendly. It's also worth noting there's only one bathroom here. Set in the residential district of Cannaregio, you’ve got authentic cafes and restaurants on your doorstep. When you’re ready to see the sights, the Rialto Bridge (a six-minute walk) is a fine place to start.

Commedia dell'Arte

If you're after canal views, this apartment more than delivers. Perch on the chair in the picture window, a glass of wine in hand, and watch the gondolas glide right past – sounds like pure bliss. The scenery is certainly a showstopper, but the rest of the apartment is just as charming. We love the wooden beams and terrazzo Veneziano tiles. And, of course, the location speaks for itself. The famous San Marco Square is a fifteen-minute stroll away, while Cannaregio's canalside eateries are also within easy reach.

Gliding Gondolas

Situated in a residential area of Venice, this apartment allows you to enjoy the city while avoiding the hustle and bustle. There's a small private garden here, which is a rarity in these parts – it is unfurnished, though, so it’s not the most charming space. Inside, the small kitchen means light bites only – but if you have a hankering for something more substantial, there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance. Plus, Santa Lucia train station is only ten minutes away, and there's easy access to excellent wine bars and taverns nearby.

Venetian Oasis

Located inside a 15th-century palace, this luxurious apartment is quite literally fit for royalty. Experly restored, the interiors blend original gestures with chic Italian design for a cosy retreat that’s right on the canal. Easily accessed via water taxi, so you can easily spend your days seeing the sights of Cannaregio. French windows in the lounge open up onto the water, making for spectacular views and a sense of being immersed in your surroundings. This is a studio apartment, so the kitchen is on the smaller side, but the bedroom is on a mezzanine level with creates more space.

This impressive apartment in the heart of Cannaregio caught our eye for all the right reasons. This 15th-century canal-side palazzo has been designed by architect Alberto Torsello and the interior design team Zanon Associati to create a slice of Venetian paradise. Terrazzo floors, colourful frescoes and Soffitto a Cassettoni wooden ceilings are just a few of the luxurious finishings here, and the amenities are as functional as they are beautiful. Unwinding as a group feels particularly decadent, especially with a glass of Garganega wine in hand. And with a central location just moments from the Rio di Santa Fosca and Rio del Trapolin canals, you couldn’t be better placed for a Venice stay.

This characterful two-storey apartment is found on Murano, one of Venice's smaller islands located a mile north of the Centro Storico. With its open spaces and exposed red brickwork reminiscent of a New York loft, there's lots to admire about this stylish setting, particularly the aquamarine kitchen and breakfast bar. A group of four may need to adjust to having two beds – including one sofa bed – in the same upstairs bedroom, but there's still plenty of room to relax and get comfortable. While Murano is well known for it's history of glassmaking, you'll also be five minutes from the nearest vaporetto stop, where water buses can take you across to Venice's star attractions.

The views from this home are pretty spectacular. Facing the Cannaregio Canal, you definitely won’t forget that you’re in Venice anytime soon. A mix of Art Nouveau touches and contemporary minimalism, it’s the past meets the present in an elegant version. We particularly loved the modern kitchen – it’s a dream for any chef because of the high-quality appliances and a sociable kitchen island. The location isn’t the most central (it’s a thirty-minute walk away from Piazza San Marco), but Cannaregio is also a charming neighbourhood – and the nearest Vaporetto stop isn't far away.

The Palace By The Canal

In charming Cannaregio, this home is a great find for families and friends. The walled garden makes a striking first impression, with its outdoor dining area and cherub statues – we can't think of a better setting for alfresco breakfasts and evening tipples. Indoors, you'll find pastel-hued rooms and views of the Rio Della Sensa canal. The home is composed of two apartments divided by a stone staircase. Each level has its own lounge, kitchen, and two en-suite bedrooms. Although the area is a hidden gem without the usual tourists, you're just a thirty-minute walk from San Marco Square and the Bridge of Sighs.

For those seeking a central base in Venice, this apartment is a contemporary and chic option. It's set up like a studio, though Crittall-style doors seamlessly separate the bedroom from the living area. There's a small kitchen, but with eateries nearby, we bet you'll prefer to dine out. We're fond of the neutral colour scheme, too, but most of all, we're big fans of the location. You'll be a fifteen-minute walk from San Marco Square, right in the heart of the city.

One of Burano’s iconic rainbow houses, this 17th-century building sits on the Canale della Giudecca. From the shop and restaurant-lined street, you step straight into the kitchen which looks like a traditional nona’s cucina with its cast iron oven. The dine-in living room on the ground floor feels more like a dining room with a sofa, but the additional attic reading nook makes up for the shared space downstairs. Both big, bright bedrooms are up on the first floor (up a creaky wooden staircase) and you’ve got the added bonus of a private terrace tucked away at the back.

Part of the Lino Delle Fate Eco Village Resort, this cabana-style home has been inspired by the sea. Rattan lampshades swing from cream-coloured ceilings, white walls are punctuated by blue fishing nets, and straw hats hang above beds. The small kitchenette is perfect for preparing apertivi, which are best eaten on the terrace with a glass of chilled wine. 

If you're not in the mood to cook, the facilities on site are exceptional, with a restaurant and bar.
