There are a lot of things we like about this lodge in the Alpine village of Cortina d'Amprezzo, but we'd be lying if we didn't single out the rather lovely view from the balcony as our standout highlight – from this spot, it's possible to gaze out over the locale's rooftops and dramatically beautiful mountains beyond.

Back inside, the interior design is as rustic as you might imagine, with an abundance of wood in everything from the walls and floors to the furnishings and finishes. A few pieces of artwork and natural decorative items lend a little character, while the horseshoe-shaped kitchen has enough space for cooking up hearty dinners when you're fresh off the slopes.

Ah yes, skiing – there's plenty of opportunity for winter sports here, with lifts up to the slopes lying within walking distance. Even closer, there are restaurants, shops and a museum within the town to explore.

Pass Me My Paintbrush

Perched above the snowline in the Puster Valley, this villa offers ski-in/ski-out access onto Kronplatz's slopes, so the mountain is yours from the moment you step outside. The pool terrace and outdoor hot tub both face the Alpine valley, making it hard to know whether to swim or simply stand and stare. Inside, a fireplace draws everyone together after a day on the slopes, while the private wellness area – Finnish sauna, infrared cabin, and rain shower – means recovery is taken seriously. Come summer, the same trails that frame those views become hiking and cycling routes right from the door.

Firelit Chalet

Set in a traditional chalet-style building with a wooden roof and pretty wooden balcony in the Italian Alps, this charming home is ideal for an adventure-packed mountain escape. Decorated in neutral, earthy tones with minimalist but comfortable furniture, the inside of this home has a soothing feel. In the open-plan living-and-kitchen space, vanilla-coloured walls, a charcoal sofa and wooden table come together to make a welcoming space, and under-floor heating keeps things extra cosy. There are two neat, clutter-free bedrooms, a well-equipped kitchen and a modern bathroom with gigantic walk-in shower. The chalet has a number of excellent shared amenities, including a games room – with a table tennis table and a table football table – a fitness room, a sauna, steam room and relaxation room, plus plenty of storage for bikes in the summer and skis in the winter. But the real draw here is the views. Out in the garden, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping, jaw-dropping views of the Alps.

Alpine Meadow Flower

Tucked into the quiet Cianderies area of Cortina d'Ampezzo, this ground-floor apartment puts the Dolomites right outside your door – dramatic peaks framing every view. Inside, a carved wooden bed and deep sofas set a properly alpine tone, while the timber terrace is the place to sit with a coffee and take in the meadows stretching out around you. Pets are welcome, parking is easy, and the whole setup suits families or groups looking for a calm, unhurried base from which to explore one of the Alps' most celebrated resorts.

Meadows of Cianderies

Tucked into a peaceful Dolomites hamlet, this apartment is a proper base for days spent exploring one of Italy's most dramatic mountain landscapes. The living room opens onto a private terrace with open views across the peaks, while the alpine-style bedroom is warm and restful after a long day on the trails. Selva di Cadore is roughly a thirty-five-minute drive, the Marmolada Glacier around fifty-five minutes, and Cortina d'Ampezzo – the glamorous heart of the region – a seventy-nine-minute drive away. Families will find the hamlet setting calm and easy to navigate.

Andrich After the Peaks

Buried in the South Tyrolean Alps with pine-forested slopes on every side, this timber chalet sits directly on Plan de Corones – two minutes from the Olang valley station and a short drive from the Kronplatz summit's Dolomite panoramas. Inside, soaring ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows keep the mountain landscape in constant view, while en-suite bedrooms mean the whole group can settle in without compromise. The private wellness area – Finnish sauna, bio sauna, relaxation room, and a heated infinity pool with whirlpool – makes it easy to end each day well.

Kronplatz Cloud Nine

Few chalets in the Dolomites come close to this scale of comfort – six marble-clad suites, a basement wellness floor with a heated indoor lap pool, sauna, and Jacuzzi, and a cinema room when the mountains can wait. Dinners are handled by an in-house Michelin chef, and a round-the-clock driver means Cortina's boutiques and après-ski scene are always on hand. The main suite's balcony looks out over the town and the peaks beyond, and the Tofana di Mezzo cable car is about twenty-eight minutes away by car.
